Cave Yves Cuilleron is a family estate in the Northern Rhône, born from a winemaking history that began in 1920, when grandfather Claude Cuilleron planted the first vines, and which actually began bottling in 1947. In 1987, Yves Cuilleron took over from his uncle and expanded the estate from a few hectares in Condrieu and Saint-Joseph to over 75 hectares spread across Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage and beyond. An engineer by training, Yves introduced rigorous, organic viticulture without heavy pesticides and limited fertilisers, working by hand on steep slopes, and is recently aiming for organic certification by 2025. The climate is semi-continental, with hot summers, mistral winds and cool winters – ideal for expressive Rhône wines.

characteristics of the Crozes‑Hermitage appellation

The Crozes‑Hermitage AOC is the largest in the northern Rhône and produces mainly Syrah reds, sometimes supplemented with Marsanne or Roussanne, and some elegant white blends. The terroirs range from alluvial to granitic and siliceous – elements that bring a fresh crispness and mineral depth to the wine.

grapes, harvest and vinification of Les Rousses 2023

Les Rousses is a white Crozes‑Hermitage, made from 100% Marsanne grown on the left bank of the Rhône, on glacial sedimentary soils. The grapes are hand-picked during the harvest, gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in 300-litre foudre and Burgundy oak barrels. They are aged on fine lees for 8 to 9 months, without excessive filtration or pumping over, which ensures full texture and complexity.

color, aroma and flavor profile of the wine

This 2023 shows a bright straw yellow color. On the nose subtle aromas of peach, pear, almond and white flowers are noted – with a hint of honey. On the palate it is round, with a rich acidity and an elegant balance between fruit and minerality. The finish is spicy and dry with notes of citrus and almond, and offers a nice fresh freshness combined with a subtle creaminess.

why order this wine

Les Rousses 2023 is a perfect fit for connoisseurs and sommeliers looking for a refined white Rhône with depth, finesse and ageing potential. The combination of handcraft, ecological approach and clear climate make this a characterful choice. Its balance between ripe fruit and lively freshness offers a versatile wine experience – a refined alternative to Chardonnay or Viognier.

Yves Cuilleron represents the third generation of winemakers. Cave Cuilleron was founded in 1920. In 1987, the domain came into the hands of Yves through his grandfather and uncle. Together with François Villard, Yves Cuilleron is today one of the greatest talents in the northern Rhône. Wine Spectator calls him the leader of the new generation of winemakers in the Condrieu. Most of his vineyards are in and around Chavanay, just south of Condrieu. In total, it has 59 hectares divided between Saint Joseph (Blanc), Saint Joseph (Rouge), Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu.

Yves has an important slogan... picking grapes as ripe as possible! He is a gourmand who loves good food and 'Les Vins Gourmand'. You can also taste that in his wines. He makes his wines '100% maison'. For each plot or type of wine, he monitors the Cuilleron style of the relevant cuvée, without compromise. However, nothing is certain with him. He works on feeling, experience and continues to observe and adjust. He selects the fruit from the older and younger canes. He does the same with the different plots. He only blends different plots if there are enough synonyms or properties that complement each other.

In terms of winemaking, Yves goes his own way. He doesn't follow trends. He does not work conventionally, not organically and not biodynamically, but according to his own philosophy aimed at obtaining healthy grapes. He continuously observes in order to be able to intervene in time. He has been working sustainably for 20 years according to la lutte raisonnée; a sensible way of winemaking without pesticides and fertilizers. In the cellar he works with natural yeasts and prefers to use older casks and barriques instead of steel tanks.
