Description
The story of Anne de Joyeuse
Anne de Joyeuse is a cooperative of winemakers operating in the heart of the Languedoc region since 1929. The winery takes its name from Duke Anne de Joyeuse, a confidante of King Henry III, and has been a model of dedication and collaboration for decades. The winemakers work with respect for tradition, terroir, and nature, resulting in wines with character and elegance.
The estate combines modern winemaking techniques with a sustainable approach to viticulture. Since 1994, they have been committed to the Protect Planet program, which safeguards biodiversity and ecological balance in the vineyards. This commitment is palpable in every bottle: wines with pure expression and natural balance.
The region and terroir of the Pays d'Oc
The Pays d'Oc is located in southern France, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees. This is one of the country's most diverse wine regions, with a wide variety of microclimates and soils. Anne de Joyeuse's vineyards are primarily situated on clay and limestone soils, which give the grapes minerality and structure. Thanks to their proximity to the Pyrenees, the vineyards benefit from cool nights that ensure slow, balanced ripening of the grapes.
The result is a Chardonnay with a perfect balance of ripe fruit, freshness, and elegance. The combination of sun, altitude, and coolness makes this region ideal for wines with tension and finesse.
The grape: 100% Chardonnay
The Original Chardonnay 2024 is made exclusively from Chardonnay. This grape is beloved worldwide for its versatility, but in the Pays d'Oc, it develops its own distinct character. Here, it produces aromas of white flowers, citrus, and ripe fruit, supported by a subtle oaky note. The wine is lively yet smooth, with a beautiful roundness and a fresh finish typical of this terroir.
Vinification and maturation
Upon arrival at the cellar, the grapes are immediately pressed. The juice is then clarified at a low temperature to preserve the fruit's freshness. Fermentation takes place under strictly controlled temperatures, ensuring a pure expression of the Chardonnay. The wine is then aged partly in stainless steel and partly in oak: 50% in tanks and 50% in barrels, of which one-third is new, one-third is made up of one wine, and one-third is made up of two wines. This balance creates a perfect balance between freshness and complexity.
The result is a wine that offers the best of both worlds: vibrant fruitiness and soft, subtle wood notes that add depth without being overpowering.
Tasting notes for the Anne de Joyeuse Original Chardonnay 2024
The wine has a clear, light golden color with a refined sheen. The nose reveals intense aromas of white flowers, citrus, and a light spice. On the palate, it offers a fruity attack with a soft texture, followed by a fresh, elegant finish. The wine is perfectly balanced, with a subtle tension between fruit and acidity that makes it lively and refined.
Serve the wine chilled between 10 and 12°C. It's delicious as an aperitif and also pairs perfectly with refined fish dishes.
The character and philosophy of 'Original'
The name Original is more than a reference to a wine style; it represents Anne de Joyeuse's own philosophy. Original stands for respect for tradition and the courage to innovate. The wine is a tribute to the winemakers who made this region great, but also a symbol of their modern, sustainable vision. By balancing old and new, Anne de Joyeuse remains true to its roots, while the wines continue to evolve over time.

Wijnhuis
It was in the year 1929 that a group of winegrowers decided to pool their knowledge and know-how, with the aim of making beautiful wines from the upper Aude valley. First of all, the focus was on the red wines, the whites would follow later.
As a tribute to the Duke of Joyeuse, the name Anne de Joyeuse was chosen. This duke was the first to make the beautiful region shine at the court of King Henry III. As a reward and also in exchange for his loyal services, the king offered him the lordship of the lands of Limoux.
The winegrowers decided in 1972 to plant Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Malbec as red grape varieties. As white grape varieties they chose Chardonnay and Sauvignon. All these varieties are perfectly adapted to the Limoux region and now benefit optimally from the influences of the 4r areas: Mediterranean, Oceania, Pyrenees and Autan.
Over time, winegrowers became aware of the exceptional quality of their terroir. However, this also evoked a great sense of responsibility to maintain this quality as well as possible, and therefore to treat the environment with care. Because, this winery argues: "A responsible operation of the vineyard leads to responsible wines".
Listening to nature is therefore very important to this winery. Over the years, the winemakers' ambitious action plan to protect the environment and their land has become a true philosophy. Therefore, the engineering team and board of directors considered it extremely essential to create an even more ambitious specification. One that goes further than the Agri Confidence Volet Environnement certification, limiting vineyard interventions, participating in the development of ecosystems, energy management, etc. The Protect Planet® was started for this purpose, as a supplement to the agro-ecological method.
All in all, this dedicated and extremely careful working method ensures beautiful wines with an authentic taste of a protected nature.
