In 1981, Mas Martinet was born, a lifelong project and a dream come true. The brand is the result of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero and is now owned by the entire family: Josep Lluís, Montse, Sara, Núria, Adrià, Marc, Jordi, Armando, and Pilar. The unique wines of Mas Martinet in Priorat have enormous aging potential. For over 25 years, Martinet has reigned at the top of the Priorat appellation. In recent years, father Pérez has retired from Mas Martinet, and the wines are now vinified by Sara Pérez (see also Venus, Dido, and Gratallops ). Sara is also the wife of another icon, René Barbier Jr., known for Clos Mogador , and René and Sara also make wines under their own names, Sara Pérez y René Barbier . Naturally, we also carry these wines.
Clos Martinet comes from the plots of the Mas d'en Martinet estate, located in the wine region of the town of Gratallops. The slate-rich land and the varying exposures of the vineyards give this wine the typical character of an estate each year. Mas Martinet is one of the pioneers of the new Priorat, the Pérez family's project. Since 2017, they no longer use a sorting table or a cypress, but all their fermentations are with the grapes' yeasts; and they stopped chilling the grapes 15 years ago. From 2006 to 2016, they increased the number of full bunches in their fermentations, which are now 100% full bunches for all wines except the Martinet Bru.
They have 25 hectares of vineyards across five different locations, cultivated organically and biodynamically using permaculture and regenerative agriculture. The Martinet Bru comes partly from an estate called Mas Seró, located in the Masos de Falset region of the Serra Alta, at an altitude of 400 meters and facing southwest, and another estate in Torroja, which is colder and deeper. It is a blend of Garnatxa Negra, Carinyena, Sirà, and a small amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, naturally made organically/biodynamically without chemicals.
The flagship Clos Martinet is the wine that started it all and remains a blend of Garnacha (Tinta and Peluda), Syrah, Cariñena, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Monastrell, just as it has been since the inception of this now iconic wine. It embodies Elegance with a capital E and shares many similarities with Clos Mogador (yes, Sara's wife, Rene Barbier). Clos Martinet is a terraced vineyard of just five hectares, planted in 1986 on a llicorella schist terroir with high iron content and large rocks in the soil. Depending on the harvest date, the varietals are fermented at three different maturations in two concrete vats and 200-liter oak barrels with indigenous yeast and whole bunches. The beginning and end of the élevage are spent in concrete, and in between, they used oak barrels of 2,000 and 4,100 liters, and about 20% glass demijohns and amphorae. The wine is subtle and insinuating. It is medium-bodied, fresh, and balanced. Dark ruby red in color with dark fruit aromas along with graphite and espresso. Both the nose and palate are very complex. This is a very elegant Clos Martinet. It is a deep, warm, flavorful, and elegant wine. The most classic and recognizable Priorat.

The traditional 2023 Clos Martinet (there's a limited bottling without added sulfites, called Clos Martinet SSA) has a classical Priorat nose, with power and personality. The south-facing Garnacha fermented in a dry carbonic maceration, and the other slope, with Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah in similar proportions, fermented with full clusters, with foot treading and five days of macerations. The wine is so powerful in 2023 that the blend, approximately 50/50, still has a lot of weight—in 2024 she macerated less. It matured in concrete for one year and then one-third each in foudre, clay and concrete for five more months. It's a powerful Martinet with abundant tannins, for the long haul. 8,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024.
The two cuvées, this and the SSA, were bottled at the same time; an earlier bottling would benefit the unsulfured one. In 2024, the wines were also bottled at the same time but in early June—so, three months later than the 2023. But, starting in 2025, this bottling will have a longer élevage than the SSA one without added sulfites. Here, the sensation is of higher ripeness.

At Mas Martinet, all chemicals in the vineyards have been banned. Sara and her team at Martinet are always looking for new perspectives, with a culture based on balance, sustainability and harmony with nature. Deeply committed to tradition, to the environment and to people. They recover some varieties and reinvent some processes and materials according to the principles of agroecology and minimal intervention with maximum respect for the people who work on it. They process the crops in an environmentally friendly manner, treating the processes as respectfully as possible. Examples include growing legumes and wild species of flowers and shrubs in order to provide food for the entire chain. they base us on the lunar calendar to optimize (bio-dynamic) the natural treatments we use in the vineyard, such as compost and herbal infusions.

The wine press is unanimous in its praise for the wines of this iconic house. Wines getting points close to the maximum limit of 100 points is standard rather than exceptional. Supply from the relatively small stamp vineyards is very limited and the storage potential of the wines is unprecedentedly long.
