Description
An expressive dry Furmint from Tokaj in a modern style.
History of the Ma'd Moser winery
Ma'd Moser is a relatively young winery, founded in 2022 by Lenz Moser and Rita Takaró DipWSET. Lenz comes from one of Austria's most prominent wine families with fifteen generations of experience, while Rita, a first-generation wine professional, brings her own expertise. Together, they joined forces with winemaker Gábor Urbán of Mad Wine to write a new chapter in Tokaj's history. The goal was clear from the start: to create a new style of dry Furmint that would put Tokaj on the international map, not only with its renowned sweet wines but also as a producer of white wines that rival the great names from Burgundy, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, and California.
Tokaj region and the vineyards around Mád
The Tokaj wine region in northeastern Hungary is one of the oldest and most prestigious wine regions in Europe. Ma'd Moser focuses on the vineyards surrounding the village of Mád, where the soils consist of volcanic rocks such as zeolite and rhyolite, supplemented with clay minerals. This terroir gives the wines a unique minerality and tension. For the MM55 Furmint 2023, grapes were selected from three renowned plots: Nyulászó, which yields fruity and nutty aromas; St. Tamás, which provides a backbone of minerality and a subtle salty note; and Király, which brings together both styles and creates harmony in the blend. The result is a so-called "arc of suspense" in which tension, balance, and complexity converge.
The Ma'd Moser Furmint Dry MM55 2023
The MM55 is considered the icon of Ma'd Moser and the bigger brother of the lighter MM5. The number refers to a doubling of intensity across the five key parameters of wine: fruit, acidity, structure, complexity, and length. Only around 4,500 bottles are produced annually, making it both scarce and sought-after. The 2023 edition builds on the successful style of previous years and once again demonstrates how versatile and characterful Furmint can be in its dry form.
Grape, harvest and vinification of the MM55
The MM55 is made entirely from the Furmint grape, which has played a central role in Tokaj for centuries. For the 2023 vintage, the grapes were carefully selected and hand-harvested to ensure the highest quality. After harvest, fermentation took place in 300-liter Hungarian oak barrels. A full 70% of the barrels used were new, sourced from different coopers and with varying degrees of toasting. This approach gives the wine depth and layering, without the oak overpowering the freshness and fruitiness. The wine remained in barrel for eight months, during which the natural acidity beautifully integrated into the rich texture. The alcohol content is 14%, with 6.5 grams per liter of acidity and the same amount of residual sugar, ensuring balance and length.
taste, aroma and aroma
The Ma'd Moser MM55 2023 presents itself in the glass with a bright, golden yellow color. On the nose, the wine reveals a rich palette of aromas: ripe peach, pear, and grapefruit are complemented by notes of honeydew melon, chamomile, and a hint of vanilla from the oak. A subtle hint of smoke, fresh flowers, and spicy notes such as white pepper add further complexity. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with an oily texture beautifully balanced by the lively acidity. The stone fruit is supported by notes of orange peel and a light hint of coconut, giving the wine a long and elegant finish. Despite its power and richness, the style remains inviting and approachable.
Style and character of the 2023 Dry Furmint
The 2023 edition clearly demonstrates what Ma'd Moser stands for: harmony and complexity in a youthful, fresh form. The team describes the wine as hedonistic, yet always balanced and drinkable. The oak influence is palpable, but never overpowering; it tempers the lively acidity of Furmint and gives the wine a creamy structure without losing its freshness. The combination of volcanic minerality, fruity concentration, and spicy oak notes makes this wine versatile at the table and an interesting wine for several years of cellaring.

This ripe and juicy furmint is rippling with ripe peach and pink grapefruit character with just a hint of tropical fruit and white flowers. Thanks to the uplifting acidity and a positive hint of bitterness the 14% alcohol is nowhere to be seen. Very succulent and clean, long finish. Drink or hold.

Tokaj is famous for its centuries-old wine history, and Ma’d Moser adds a fresh, modern layer to it.
Ma’d Moser winery in Tokaj
The Ma’d Moser winery is a relatively new name in Tokaj, but its roots run deep. It was born out of the collaboration between the Austrian Moser wine family and the Hungarian Tokaj region. That connection brings together experience, tradition, and new ideas. The village of Mád, where the vineyards are located, has been the beating heart of Tokaj for centuries and breathes wine culture in every corner.
MÁD MOSER was founded through the partnership between Mad Wine and wine expert Lenz M. Moser. The goal is to introduce a new interpretation of dry Furmint wines from this historic wine region to both national and international markets. MÁD MOSER focuses entirely on dry Furmint wines, aiming to surprise and captivate wine lovers worldwide with this fresh style.
History of Ma’d Moser
Tokaj is one of the oldest classified wine regions in the world. As early as the 17th century, Tokaji Aszú was exported to royal courts across Europe. Ma’d Moser builds on that legacy but also looks ahead. The winery was established to combine the unique conditions of Tokaj with a fresh and international outlook. As a result, classic grapes like Furmint and Hárslevelű are given a contemporary stage.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The vineyards of Ma’d Moser surround the village of Mád, where volcanic soils dominate the terroir. This volcanic bedrock gives the wines their signature tension and minerality. Furmint takes the lead: a grape that excels both in dry styles and in sweet Aszú wines. Hárslevelű is also planted, often adding a softer tone to blends. Together they form the recognizable Tokaj profile: freshness, depth, and a long finish.
Climate in Tokaj
The Tokaj region has a mild continental climate. Summers are warm, winters cold. What makes the area truly special are the autumn mists. These fogs, rising from the Bodrog and Tisza rivers, trigger the noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) needed for the famous sweet Tokaji Aszú. For the dry wines, it’s the mix of sun and coolness that counts: ripe grapes that still keep their fresh acidity. That contrast gives the wines their energy.
Fun facts about Ma’d Moser
- The Austrian Moser family is also known for their biodynamic vineyards in the Kremstal.
- The winery combines Hungarian tradition with a modern, international approach to winemaking.
- In addition to the well-known Aszú, Ma’d Moser produces crisp, dry Furmint that is gaining attention worldwide.
- The village of Mád is considered one of the most beautiful wine spots in Tokaj, with historic cellars and baroque churches.
