Description
The estate has been in the Michelot family for 6 generations. The estate now covers over 19 hectares, including a number of prestigious 1er cru wines. Michelot deliberately chooses to limit the use of anti-disease treatments on the vines. They prefer a carefully planned ploughing programme to keep the soil healthy. The harvest in the vineyards is done by hand selection of the best grapes. In order to maintain their independence as growers and winemakers, they are also not part of an organised system of organic viticulture. Today, Nicolas Mestre is the winemaker. With his cool hairdo, he looks like a hip Kiwi winemaker. This is no coincidence: he learned the tricks of the trade in Marlborough, among other places. Today, Nicolas produces finer and more mineral wines, with more remontage, less pigeage and batonnage and less new oak (on average 15%). According to them, the wines must evolve with contemporary eating habits with less buttery and fatty dishes.
The Meursault region and its climate
Meursault is located in the southern Côte d'Or and is known worldwide for its expressive and full-bodied white wines. The soil consists of marl and limestone, ideal for Chardonnay. The climate is semi-continental with warm summers and cool winters, which contributes to the aromatic ripeness and fresh acidity of the grapes.
Vinification of the Meursault Premier Cru Charmes 2023
The wine is made from 100% Chardonnay, from the Premier Cru vineyard 'Charmes', one of the most prized terroirs of Meursault. The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure quality. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, some of which are new, and maturation typically lasts 12 to 15 months on the fine lees. This promotes complexity, structure and a subtle woody note.
Tasting notes of the Meursault Charmes 2023
In the glass this wine shows a deep golden yellow colour with shiny reflections. The bouquet opens with notes of ripe pear, roasted hazelnuts, white flowers and a subtle mineral touch. On the tongue the wine is round and layered, with a creamy texture and fresh acidity. The taste develops with nuances of citrus, toast and a salty minerality, and finishes long and refined.
