Domaine Matrot and the Meursault tradition

Domaine Matrot belongs to the oldest wine families in Meursault and has been known for generations for its terroir-driven wines. Led by Thierry and Pascale Matrot, the estate combines tradition with a modern approach to winemaking. Their style is characterized by purity, precision, and respect for the grape and soil. The family owns vineyards in several prestigious appellations, including Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Maranges. The estate is internationally renowned for the balance and clarity of its wines.

The Maranges La Fussière vineyard

The La Fussière vineyard is located in Maranges, the southernmost part of the Côte de Beaune. The vines are on average thirty years old and are planted on chalky clay soil with a southeasterly exposure. This terroir produces ripe and aromatic grapes that give this premier cru its intensity and complexity. Thanks to the microclimate with ample sunshine and cool nights, the grapes retain their fresh acidity and elegant structure.

Vinification and maturation

The 2023 Maranges La Fussière 1er Cru is made from 100% Pinot Noir. The grapes are completely destemmed and fermented with natural yeasts. Before fermentation, a cold maceration takes place for 3 to 6 days at 10°C, followed by fermentation for 12 to 18 days. During this period, pigeage or remontage is applied twice a day for optimal extraction of color and tannin.

After fermentation, the wine is aged for 15 months on its lees in French oak barrels, approximately 20% of which are new. Before bottling, the wine rests for another three months in stainless steel, after which it is lightly filtered to preserve its finesse and clarity. This process produces a wine with both power and elegance, ideal for lovers of classic Burgundy.

Tasting note of the 2023 Maranges La Fussière 1er Cru

The wine opens with an intense nose of black cherries, blackberries, and subtle spices. On the palate, it reveals a full structure with ripe fruit and a hint of spice. The soft tannins give the wine elegant balance, while the long finish adds finesse and minerality. This premier cru is already a pleasure to drink now, but with a few years of bottle aging, it could develop even further in complexity and depth.

Serving advice and storage potential

Serve the wine slightly chilled at 15 to 16°C for optimal expression of fruit and elegance. This premier cru can age for 10 to 12 years, during which time its flavors will further deepen and refine.

Wine and food pairings

The 2023 Domaine Matrot Maranges La Fussière 1er Cru pairs beautifully with a wide variety of dishes. Its structure and refinement make it a versatile wine at the table.

  • Grilled duck breast with red berry sauce – the fruity notes complement the juicy meat perfectly.
  • Coq au vin with mushrooms – the earthy flavours enhance the spiciness of the wine.
  • Rack of lamb with Provençal herbs – the spicy aromas form a harmonious whole with the tannins.

Domaine Matrot is a prestigious wine producer located in the heart of the Burgundian wine region in France. The history of Domaine Matrot goes back several generations. It started at the end of the 19th century when Joseph Matrot founded the estate in Meursault, a renowned village for producing exceptional Chardonnay wines.

Over the years, the Matrot family has painstakingly cultivated and expanded their vineyards, acquiring prime plots of land in some of Burgundy's most prized appellations, including Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay. This strategic acquisition of vineyards has enabled Domaine Matrot to produce a wide range of high-quality wines that showcase the unique terroir of each vineyard location. Domaine Matrot is known for its traditional winemaking techniques, prioritizing minimal intervention to allow the expression of the terroir and the characteristics of the grape varieties to shine through in the final wines. They typically ferment their wines using indigenous yeasts and age them in French oak barrels to add complexity and structure while respecting the delicate nuances of the fruit.

The estate has been passed down through several generations of the Matrot family, each contributing their expertise and passion for winemaking to uphold the domain's reputation for excellence. Today, Domaine Matrot is run by the current generation of the family, who continue to uphold the estate's traditions while embracing modern developments in viticulture and winemaking. Domaine Matrot consistently produces wines that reflect Burgundy's unique terroir and skill.
