Description
Domaine Frantz Chagnoleau is a small estate run by two talented winemakers, Frantz Chagnoleau and his wife Caroline Gon (winemaker at Héritiers du Comte Lafon). Frantz has a degree in oenology, having gained his experience working for Olivier Merlin in the Mâconnais. Caroline has two degrees in agricultural engineering and oenology; she worked at Newton Vineyards in Napa Valley before returning to France to work with Dominique Lafon as head winemaker for Héritiers du Comte Lafon. Having Dominique as a friend and mentor has had a profound influence on the pair, evident in a line-up of pure, terroir-driven Mâconnais wines.
Since 2013, all vineyards have been certified organic. Like Lafon, this dynamic duo believes in minimal intervention, including using only indigenous yeast, as the best way to express the nuances of each unique terroir. Aging takes place in largely large, used French oak, with harvesting done entirely by hand, plot by plot, allowing each vine to achieve the right balance of sugar and acidity before being picked. This dynamic duo are one of the most talented teams in all of Burgundy, farming the old-fashioned way and making micro-quantities of single vineyard white Burgundy from some of the best Chardonnay terroirs in the world.
The Saint-Véran La Roche comes from a 0.42 hectare plot in Chasselas, planted with 70-year-old Chardonnay vines on marl soils. This mid-altitude exposure offers an ideal balance of sunlight and coolness, resulting in grapes with excellent acidity and aromatic complexity. l
Vinification and maturation of Saint-Véran La Roche
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. After a soft pressing, the juice undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in mainly used French oak barrels, of which approximately 10% are new. The wine is then aged for 12 months on the fine lees, followed by an additional 3 months of maturation in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness.
Tasting notes: colour, aroma and flavour
The Saint-Véran La Roche presents itself with a bright, golden color. On the nose, the wine offers a powerful expression of citrus fruits and white flowers, with subtle mineral and salty notes. On the palate, the wine is tight and fresh, with a delicate tension and a long, mineral finish that makes the mouth tingle.
