The Mâconnais is a sunny corner of Burgundy known for fresh and lively wines.

The history of the Mâconnais wine region

The Mâconnais lies in the south of Burgundy and has a long winemaking tradition. Wine was already produced here in Roman times, but it was in the Middle Ages that the region gained real importance. Monasteries and abbeys played a key role in this growth. Later, the area became famous as a source of approachable white wines enjoyed across France. Today, the Mâconnais has secured its reputation, especially thanks to Chardonnay.

The location and landscape of the Mâconnais

This region lies just south of the Côte Chalonnaise and stretches towards Beaujolais. The scenery is made up of rolling hills, limestone soils, and plenty of sunshine. Together, these elements shape wines that are crisp yet smooth. Well-known villages include Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran, Viré-Clessé, and Mâcon-Villages. Each village adds its own character to the wines, but the common thread remains: fruity, clean, and easy to enjoy.

Rules and appellations in the Mâconnais

The leading grape here is Chardonnay. Red wines are made mostly from Gamay with a touch of Pinot Noir, but white wines clearly dominate. The appellation system starts with AOP Mâcon, often paired with a village name such as Mâcon-Lugny. Beyond that, you’ll find more specific appellations like Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran, known for their higher quality. Rules cover grape varieties, maximum yields, and alcohol levels, all designed to protect the style and identity of the region.

How Mâconnais wines are made

Most wines from the Mâconnais are produced in stainless steel tanks to keep their bright fruit character intact. Expect citrus, green apple, and sometimes a touch of exotic fruit. Higher quality wines may see oak aging, usually done with restraint, to add roundness and depth. Because the climate is slightly warmer than northern Burgundy, the wines tend to be riper and softer, while still keeping the freshness that makes them so appealing.

Fun facts about the Mâconnais

The Mâconnais is Burgundy’s largest white wine area, with Chardonnay as the star. It’s also the birthplace of the famous Pouilly-Fuissé, which for years was the most popular white Burgundy in France. Beyond wine, the area is wonderful to explore by bike or car, with sweeping views over vineyards and striking limestone cliffs. Here, wine and landscape truly go hand in hand.
