Château Mouton Rothschild belongs to the absolute elite of Bordeaux and became the property of the Rothschild family in 1853. Since its promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973, the château has symbolized innovation and constant quality improvement. The estate works with precision in both the vineyard and the cellar, with increasing attention to sustainability and terroir expression. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Pauillac is situated on the left bank of the Gironde and is known for its deep gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and heat retention. These conditions are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, which ripens optimally here and develops structure. The 2023 vintage combines ripeness with freshness, yielding wines with tension and aromatic precision. At Mouton Rothschild, this results in a wine with both power and control, where balance takes center stage.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The vineyards of Mouton Rothschild are situated on the finest gravel terraces of Pauillac, with optimal exposure towards the Gironde. The vines have a high average age and yield concentrated grapes with clear structure. The 2023 blend consists of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. This is one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon in the history of the château and underscores the focus on structure, depth, and precision in this vintage.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The harvest was carefully executed with selection based on ripeness and balance. During vinification, controlled extraction is employed to preserve both concentration and finesse. Aging takes place in oak barrels, using a significant proportion of new wood, as is customary for Grand Vin. The focus is on the integration of wood and fruit, allowing the wine to retain its structure without the wood dominating. The approach in 2023 results in a wine with clear precision and a harmonious structure.

Color, smell and taste

The wine displays a deep, intense color. On the nose, a complex and expressive aromatic profile emerges with notes of red and blackcurrants, cassis, and blue fruit, complemented by truffle, herbs, and subtle floral accents. As the wine opens up, a layered whole develops with added depth and nuance.

On the palate, the wine is full and concentrated, with a core of ripe fruit and a strikingly transparent structure. The tannins are velvety and very well integrated, resulting in a smooth yet powerful build-up. The wine develops continuously in the glass, revealing various layers, from fruit and spices to a more complex and refined structure. The finish is long, tight, and controlled, with the wine closing slightly at the end while maintaining tension.

Development and drinking window

The drinking window lies between 2033 and 2073, indicating exceptional aging potential. The wine needs time to fully develop and will come into its own after 2030. Over the years, the structure will further integrate and more complex aromas will emerge. This wine clearly belongs to the long-term Bordeaux category and is made for prolonged aging.

Château Mouton Rothschild is an icon of Pauillac. This legendary estate combines a rich history, unique terroir, and wines that belong to the very top worldwide. A name that fascinates wine lovers and collectors generation after generation.

History of Château Mouton Rothschild

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought the Château Brane-Mouton estate in Pauillac and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild. His aim was to serve his own wine to his distinguished guests. In 1922, his great-grandson Philippe de Rothschild took over. Two years later, he decided that all wines should be bottled at the château itself — a revolutionary move in Bordeaux at the time. In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only change ever made to the famous 1855 classification.

Later, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took the helm. She modernized the estate and in 1962 opened a museum on the property. After her passing in 2014, the château came under the leadership of her children Camille, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais, keeping it very much a family affair.

Location and terroir in Pauillac

Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, at the heart of the Médoc, close to the Gironde estuary. The vineyards benefit from the mild maritime climate and the protection of the nearby Les Landes forest. The soil is made up of gravel over layers of clay and limestone. This unique combination delivers powerful yet elegant wines with great ageing potential.

Pauillac itself is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious appellations. The village is home to three Premier Grands Crus Classés: Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and of course Château Mouton Rothschild.

Grapes and winemaking at Château Mouton Rothschild

The estate covers about 90 hectares of vineyards. Plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up more than eighty percent. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small portion of Petit Verdot complete the blend. Together they provide wines with depth, structure, and complexity.

The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. In the impressive cellars, they are vinified in modern oak vats, with each parcel treated separately. This ensures that the character of each plot can fully express itself in the final wine.

Special wines from the estate

Alongside the Grand Vin, the château also produces a second wine: Le Petit Mouton. Made from younger vines, it is approachable earlier in its life. There is also a white wine, Aile d’Argent, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and a touch of Muscadelle. Fresh, aromatic, and released only in small quantities.

Another signature of Château Mouton Rothschild is the label art. Since 1945, a world-renowned artist has been commissioned each year to design a unique label. Names such as Picasso, Miró, and Warhol have all contributed, making these bottles true collector’s items.

Key facts to remember
