Description
Layered and precise second wine from Saint-Estèphe with a clear Montrose signature.
Château Montrose Winery
Château Montrose is among the very best in Saint-Estèphe and is known for its long-lived, structured wines. Since Olivier and Martin Bouygues took over in 2006, they have invested heavily in both the vineyard and the cellar, while maintaining a classic style. La Dame de Montrose is the château's second wine and has long been considered one of Bordeaux's most consistent and high-quality second wines.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The estate is located in Saint-Estèphe, directly on the Gironde estuary, on gravelly terraces that provide excellent drainage and a cooler microclimate. In 2023, Montrose was largely spared from powdery mildew, partly due to less rainfall in June. Harvest took place between September 5th and 28th, resulting in healthy grapes with good ripeness and retained freshness.
La Dame de Montrose is the château's second wine and is blended from plots and selections not included in the Grand Vin. The wine clearly reflects the terroir and style of Montrose, but with a more accessible profile and a slightly earlier drinking window.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The 2023 La Dame de Montrose blend consists of 61% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The grapes come from various plots within the estate, with a focus on balance, precision, and refined structure.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
After manual harvesting and rigorous selection, the wine is vinified classically, with a focus on gentle extraction and preserving the purity of the fruit. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, some of which are new, in keeping with the château's style. This approach produces a wine with clear structure, yet also refinement and drinkability.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep ruby red color. The nose reveals aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, and licorice, complemented by subtle spiciness. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate notes the purity and layering of the aromatic profile.
On the palate, La Dame de Montrose 2023 is medium to full-bodied, with a compact core of dark fruit, refined tannins, and lively acidity. The texture is polished and balanced, with a slightly salty, mineral finish typical of Saint-Estèphe. The wine combines depth with accessibility and clearly retains the Montrose signature.
Development and drinking window
The wine has sufficient structure to age for several years, but will also provide enjoyment when relatively young. The reviews suggest a developmental window from the mid-20s, with further refinement over the next ten to fifteen years.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate rates La Dame de Montrose 2023 91–93 points, placing it once again among the top Bordeaux second wines. He emphasizes its depth, purity, and balance, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity, and a characteristic salty finish.

Another strong performance from this bottling, which dependably numbers among Bordeaux's top three or four second wines, the 2023 La Dame de Montrose reveals aromas of cassis, pencil shavings and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and dense palate that's polished, pure and layered, with sweet tannins, lively acids and a saline finish. It's a blend of 61% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.
This large estate overlooking the Gironde in Saint-Estèphe produces some of Bordeaux's greatest and longest-lived wines, and the last 15 or so years have seen it benefit from sustained and intelligently directed investment. There's a brand-new winery and cellars, of course, but there's a lot of work going on in the vineyards too. When Olivier and Martin Bouygues acquired Château Montrose from the Charmolüe family in 2006, the estate included fully 17 hectares of pre-clonal vines dating back to the early 20th century, and a massal selection program has since identified 80 viable individuals, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, for use when replanting (the same efforts are currently being lavished on Merlot, drawing on a block behind the château acquired from Phélan-Ségur). Now, cover crops are being trialed, and the soils are being cultivated more superficially to avoid disrupting the microbiome. Winemaking is rather classical, with maturation in some 60% new oak.
In 2023, Montrose was largely spared by mildew, receiving less rain than many other estates in June, and harvest rolled out between September 5 and 28. As in 2022, the grand vin this year derives exclusively from the Terrace 4 gravels in front of the estate itself, Montrose's historic core terroir. The 2023 La Dame de Montrose is a rich, heady wine. Succulent dark cherry, plum, new leather, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha are beautifully amplified. Explosive to the core, the 2023 possesses tons of aromatic intensity and pure volume. This showy, Merlot-based Dame is quite alluring.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
