Winery Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion

Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a historic estate in Pessac-Léognan with roots dating back to the 16th century. Under the leadership of Guillaume Pouthier, the château has developed into one of the most distinctive producers in Bordeaux. The focus is on precision, low intervention, and the use of whole clusters during fermentation. The style is distinctly aromatic, with an emphasis on finesse, tension, and texture. They work according to organic principles and with a meticulous selection of grapes. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Pessac-Léognan is located south of Bordeaux and is known for its gravelly soils that retain heat and contribute to even ripening. Les Carmes Haut-Brion distinguishes itself through its location near the city of Bordeaux, with a unique combination of gravel, sand, and clay. These soils provide both drainage and structure to the wine. The climate in 2023 presented challenges, but through careful choices in the vineyard and during the harvest, the estate managed to produce a wine of remarkable precision and balance, where ripeness and freshness come together.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The vineyards are situated on a compact estate with a wide variety of soils. Cabernet Franc plays a leading role and is well adapted to the specific terroirs of the château. The 2023 blend consists of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot. The combination of these grapes provides aromatic intensity, structure, and depth. The relatively high presence of Cabernet Franc contributes to the refinement and aromatic profile of the wine.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The harvest was carried out with care and strict selection to use only optimally ripe grapes. During vinification, a large proportion of the grapes are fermented with whole clusters, which contributes to aromatic complexity and structure. Extraction is kept under control to preserve finesse. The wine ages approximately 70% in new oak barrels, 20% in large foudres, and 10% in amphorae. This combination of aging methods ensures a balance between structure, texture, and purity of fruit.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a deep, intense color. On the nose, a complex palate emerges of red and dark berries, mulberry, and raspberry, complemented by floral notes such as rose petals and violets. Additionally, there are spicy accents, light smoky notes, and subtle citrus freshness that provide extra tension. As the wine opens up, more detail emerges with notes of spices, herbs, and a light earthy undertone.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a core of concentrated fruit and a strikingly clean structure. The tannins are very refined and fully integrated, meaning they are barely noticeable yet provide structure. The acidity ensures liveliness and contributes to the length of the wine. The finish is long, layered, and slightly saline, with a combination of fruit, spices, and minerality. The wine clearly develops in the glass, revealing increasing complexity and finesse.

Development and drinking window

According to various assessments, the drinking window lies between 2025 and 2065, with other estimates extending even to 2073. The wine is already accessible in its youth due to its refined structure, but will continue to develop over decades. As time progresses, tertiary aromas will emerge and complexity will increase. This wine is clearly made for long aging and is among the wines with the highest aging potential of the vintage.

Everything is special about this domain. It starts with the wine, which is highly sought after, but it also involves Philip Stark's incredible building. A highly innovative winemaker and a new vinification room since 2015 guarantee the vastly increased quality of this historic Chateau.

Guillaume Pouthier uses relatively many whole bunches and they undergo a long fermentation. The maturation in barrels, foeders and amphorae is also extremely long. Sometimes as long as 24 to 30 months. The Cabernet Franc character of Les Carmes Haut Brion is always evident, as is the characteristic low alcohol content. In recent years, this Chateau has been one of the top in Bordeaux.
