Description
about the Álvaro Palacios winery
Álvaro Palacios is one of Spain's most respected winemakers. Since the late 1980s, he has been working in Priorat to create wines that combine power and finesse. His vision is clear: wines should reflect the character of their vineyards. Les Aubaguetes is one of his most prestigious creations, awarded a "Vinya Classificada," the highest classification in the region. Along with oenologist Oriol Castells and viticulturist Roger Pallarés, Palacios manages his vineyards entirely organically, with a focus on biodiversity and traditional mule farming. His wines reflect not only terroir but also the tranquility and precision of artisanal viticulture.
vineyard and terroir
Located in Bellmunt del Priorat, Les Aubaguetes covers 1.79 hectares of 123-year-old vines. The vineyard is situated on north-facing slopes between 220 and 288 meters in altitude. This cooler location results in a fresh, silky style that distinguishes itself from the warmer terroirs in Gratallops. The soil consists of reddish "llicorella" (slate) with layers of sandstone and minerals such as copper and iron, which contribute to the deep, earthy minerality. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the land is worked exclusively with mules. The yield is extremely low, only 11.17 hectoliters per hectare, which explains the wine's intensity.
grape varieties and harvest
The 2023 Les Aubaguetes vintage is composed of 60% Garnacha, 35% Cariñena, and 5% white grapes (primarily Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo). This blend produces a wine with layers of complexity, tension, and freshness. Harvest took place on September 28 and October 3 and 4, 2023. Due to the exceptionally dry year with less than 250 liters of rain per year, the grapes were small, with concentrated aromas and intense extraction. Only 1,200 bottles were bottled in February 2025, a historically low yield. Due to the rainfall during the harvest, no new Les Aubaguetes will be produced in 2024.
vinification and maturation
The wine fermented with indigenous yeasts in wooden barrels, some containing whole bunches. Maceration lasted 36 days, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine then matured for 13 months in oval French oak foudres and another 2 months in cement. It was not fined, chill-stabilized, or filtered. Analysis of this vintage: alcohol 14%, pH 3.59, and total acidity 4.4 g/l. The balance between power and finesse makes the 2023 one of the most harmonious wines in the estate's history.
review by The Wine Advocate
The Wine Advocate awarded the 2023 Les Aubaguetes 98 points. Luis Gutiérrez calls it "the most elegant of the wines from 2023" and describes it as "pale, silky, and fresher, with a more delicate profile reflecting a north-facing, more humid environment." He praises the wine for its "serene harmony and the depth of the old vines, fine-boned, elegant, and harmonious." According to Gutiérrez, this is a wine with classic structure, understated power, and a slowly developing character in the bottle. The subtle notes of spicy oak and the tension between freshness and depth make the 2023 a benchmark in the Palacios range. Recommended for drinking from 2026 to 2040.
color, smell and taste
Les Aubaguetes 2023 has a light ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose is refined and complex: red cherry, plum, violets, fresh herbs, and a hint of graphite. On the palate, it is silky, fresh, and precise, with finely woven tannins. The structure is elegant yet intense, supported by ripe acidity. The palate evolves from red fruit to spicy and mineral notes, with subtle hints of wood. The finish is long, balanced, and exceptionally clean.
style and storage potential
The 2023 Les Aubaguetes is a wine of quiet and precision. It combines the power of Priorat with the finesse of Burgundy. Despite its youth, it already displays a rare balance and harmony. The wine matures slowly and will reach its peak between 2030 and 2040. Under ideal conditions, it will age effortlessly for twenty years or more.

I was anxious to taste the bottled 2023 Les Aubaguetes, as the sample from last year had shown the most elegant of the wines from 2023. It comes from an exceptional vineyard, "vinya classificada," 1.79 hectares of ancient vines (60% Garnacha, 35% Cariñena and 5% white varieties in 2023) in the village of Bellmunt del Priorat, a place that is different from most of the other vineyards in the village of Gratallops and always delivers pale, silky and fresher wines, with a more delicate profile, reflecting a north-facing, more humid place. This fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and had a 36-day maceration. It matured in oval French oak foudres for 13 months and spent two more months in concrete before bottling. Right now, it has a little bit of spicy oak, a rarity in the wines, but it can sometimes happen; it's light but noticeable next to the other wines. It has a moderate 14% alcohol and a very balanced palate with freshness and elegance. It has turned a lot more classical, with the serene harmony and the depth of the old vines, fine-boned, elegant and harmonious, even a little shy today, hinting at a slow development in bottle. This vineyard is revealing a strong personality and is the source of a superb wine, more and more consistent each vintage. 1,200 bottles were filled in February 2025, a particularly low-yielding year for this vineyard. There will be no 2024 because of the rain during the harvest and the problems with botrytis; there was only one barrel.
There were less than 250 liters of rain in Gratallops between November 2022 and October 2023, even less than in any of the previous five years. And in the spring, that is key, they only received 43 liters in four months. So, for the first time ever, Álvaro Palacios decided it was necessary to water the vines. But getting water was not easy. So, the grapes picked in 2023 were small and with concentrated juice. All in all, the harvest dates were more or less normal, finishing with l'Ermita the 11th of October.
In 2024, nature gave them a break after two years of severe draught and provided a delicate year like they had not seen for years. In March and April, they got 80 liters of rain, still moderate but much better. They had to continue watering the vines. During the summer the nights were cool, something they had not seen since 2021, but still they started harvesting at the end of August, a long and slow harvest that lasted for two months. At the end of the harvest, they got abundant rains that have extended to 2025. The wines have finesse and elegance, freshness and balance, and they have more color, as the cooler nights produce more coloring matter in the wines.
The 2023s are pretty, ethereal and approachable. The 2024s are more serious, a more vinous vintage with more extract and weight, wines for the long haul, with the contained energy and harmony of the great vintages.

This is a scented and elegant wine showing delicate red berry fruit with touches of white pepper, minerals and grapefruit. Firm, medium-bodied and chalky, with a fine thread of tannins. Linear and enveloping in the finish, with rose hips and citrus. A challengingly dry and hot year, but this maintains its nuances. This is a Priorat for pinot lovers who seek finesse. Drink now or hold.

In the late eighties, Alvaro met René Barbier, one of the rediscoverers and 'godfathers' of the Priorat. This tipped him to take a look at the forgotten wine region. Alvaro found vineyards here with very old vines. He knew immediately that he had discovered the area to be able to make absolute top wines. In 1989 he bought his first Priorat vineyard 'Finca Dofi' and in 1993 L'Ermita, a vineyard that is now considered one of the very best of the entire Priorat and is named after the chapel at the top of the vineyard.
With wines such as Finca Dofi and the now legendary L'Ermita he gained world fame and put the Priorat on the map as a wine region. All vineyards are processed on the basis of biological and / or dynamic principles to obtain the highest possible quality grapes and wine with the most natural character. Alvaro Palacios is barely 40 when he seems to have accomplished everything. Coming from a family of winegrowers - owners of the Bodegas Palacios Ramondo - as a young man in his twenties he learned the trade with Christian Moueix in the castles of Petrus and Trotanoy. Then he followed the catalan René Barbier in Priorato. Deeply impressed by ancient land and their qualitative potential, he decides to mine his own vineyard in this God-forsaken hole, 135 km south-west of Barcelona. According to Palacios' own words, the general belief is that "the yield is too low, the land is unworkable and requires a lot of manual labor" and that the chance of profitability is small. The sequel shows that the skeptics were wrong. The first millésime, namely the Ermita 1993, was immediately mentioned in the "superstars" club of Spanish wines. This cuvée, consisting of 80 to 90% Grenache Vieilles Vignes balanced by Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan Vieiles Vignes, has provoked exceptional reactions in Spain but also in the rest of the world. The ultra-modern company of Alvaro Palacios, dominating the village of Gratallops from the top of the hill, testifies to its decisive influence and ongoing efforts to revolutionize the Spanish wine industry. Alvaro Palacios, the architect of the success of the Ermita, summarizes with conviction: "The philosophy behind the vinification involves expressing the character of the terroir with the greatest transparency and purity."
The authoritative British wine magazine Decanter has named Alvaro Palacios Winemaker of the Year 2015. He is honored for his efforts to put Spain on the map in general and the regions of Bierzo and Priorat in particular worldwide. Palacios has illustrious predecessors. Last year, the brothers Perrin won from Chateau de Beaucastel, for which the honor went to Angelo Gaja, Robert Mondavi and the late Serge Hochar.
At Grandcruwijnen.nl you will find an extensive selection of the wines of Alvaro Palacios such as his absolute cult wine the L'Ermita and the Dofi, but we can certainly also recommend the wines that are a lot friendlier in price such as the Álvaro Palacios Camins del Priorat.
