Description
The story behind winemaker Álvaro Palacios
Álvaro Palacios is one of Spain's most influential winemakers. Since settling in Priorat in 1989, he has completely reinvented the image of this rugged Catalan region. His vision is based on respect for terroir, minimal intervention, and the belief that great wine is born from living soils. With the establishment of his bodega in Gratallops, he brought new splendor to the forgotten slate slopes of Priorat. His wines are now among the most coveted in the world, with L'Ermita as the absolute jewel in the crown. This wine is more than just an icon; it is a symbol of what Priorat can be in its purest form.
The L'Ermita vineyard: a sacred place in Gratallops
L'Ermita is located above the village of Gratallops, right in the heart of the DOQ Priorat. The vineyard, comprising just four hectares, is situated on steep slopes between 350 and 430 meters of altitude, with a northeasterly exposure that ensures slow ripening and intense aromatic development. The soil consists of ancient layers of slate, known locally as llicorella , rich in minerals such as magnesium and iron. The subsoil is hard, poor, and stony, allowing the vines to develop deep roots to find water and nutrients. This results in grapes with exceptional concentration and minerality. Yields are extremely low, averaging less than 10 hectoliters per hectare, resulting in a wine of unparalleled depth and precision.
Climate and harvest conditions of 2023
The 2023 growing season was marked by drought: less than 250 millimeters of rain fell between November 2022 and October 2023. The grapes were small, but with highly concentrated juice. For the first time in the estate's history, Palacios decided to carefully irrigate the L'Ermita vines to minimize stress and maintain balance. The harvest was carried out manually between October 5th and 11th, in perfect health. Despite the harsh conditions, the 2023 wine produced refinement, energy, and harmony, exceptional for such a dry year. According to The Wine Advocate , the 2023 L'Ermita displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance, with "ethereal and floral notes, fresh grape pulp and contained energy, interwoven with spices."
Composition and vinification
L'Ermita 2023 is composed of 84% Garnacha, 13% Cariñena, 2% Picapoll, and 1% white varieties (Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, and Pedro Ximénez). Fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats, partially with whole bunches to preserve tension and complexity. Maceration lasted 42 days, longer than the previous year, which adds depth and structure. The wine underwent spontaneous malolactic fermentation in wooden barrels and was then aged for 13 months in oval French oak foudres, followed by two months in cement tanks. L'Ermita is neither fined nor filtered, guaranteeing the pure expression of terroir. Only 4,730 bottles were released in February 2025, making this wine one of Spain's most exclusive.
Tasting profile of the L'Ermita 2023
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color with purple glints. The bouquet opens with aromas of ripe cherries, pomegranate, and plum, complemented by notes of violets, fresh grape pulp, spicy undertones, and subtle slate minerals. According to Luis Gutiérrez of The Wine Advocate, the wine has "blossomed" and become "more ethereal and floral" since the first tastings. On the palate, it displays an impressive balance between freshness and power. The tannins are silky, the acidity vibrant, and the finish exceptionally long, with notes of spice, cedar, and red berry. This L'Ermita 2023 sits between the more fragrant style of Dofí and the earthy, powerful expression of La Baixada.
Maturation, potential and assessment
L'Ermita 2023 is a wine that gains depth and complexity with age. While it will be elegantly approachable from 2026 onwards, it reaches its peak between 2030 and 2040. The Wine Advocate awarded the wine a score of RP 98+ , confirming its exceptional quality and potential. According to Gutiérrez, this is a wine with "the energy and harmony of the great vintages"—a rare combination of power, freshness, and finesse. The wine will be officially released in the fall of 2025 and can age for decades under optimal conditions.

ABOUT ALVARO PALACIOS
Álvaro Palacios is one of nine children of the owner of Bodega Palacios Remondo in Rioja. After studying winemaking in Bordeaux and working for two years at the renowned Petrus winery in Pomerol, he decided not to return to his native region but to discover the unspoiled land of Priorat. Priorat is about a two-hour drive from Barcelona. The area has a long winemaking history, with monks having made wine here since the 12th century. However, various setbacks caused the region to fall into obscurity. In the 19th century, there were still 15,000 hectares of vines, but by the late 1980s, only 900 hectares remained, primarily old vineyards high on the slopes, difficult to access and even more difficult to cultivate. Yet, it was these vineyards that caught the attention of a group of winemakers, including René Barbier and Álvaro Palacios. They believed in the region's enormous potential and rescued Priorat from its slump.
In 1989, Álvaro Palacios purchased his first vineyard in Priorat, Finca Dofí. Shortly thereafter, he acquired L'Ermita, a steep, northeast-facing vineyard with slate soil typical of the region. Locally known as llicorella, this soil consists of red slate with small quartz particles that reflect sunlight. L'Ermita wine has since become the flagship of Priorat. Priorat enjoys a warm continental climate with hot, dry summers. The vineyards are situated at varying altitudes, ranging from 100 to 700 meters. Nighttime temperatures can be quite cool, ensuring optimal ripening. The two main grape varieties are Garnacha and Cariñena, which thrive in Priorat's poor slate soil.

The "gran vinya classificada" single-vineyard 2023 L'Ermita was also bottled and singing. From the 4.7 hectares of the vineyard, they selected four for this vintage, with a blend of 84% Garnacha, 13% Cariñena, 2% Picapoll and 1% white grapes, Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and PX. It fermented with part of full clusters and indigenous yeasts in oak vats with a longer maceration than in 2022, a total of 42 days, followed by an élevage in French oak oval foudres of 13 months and two more months in concrete. Last year, I found it darker, earthier and a little more rustic than the 2022 wine, but it has bloomed since then. It's much more ethereal and floral, with notes of fresh grape pulp, and it has contained energy, interwoven with spices. This is now somewhere in between the more perfumed and ethereal wines like Dofi and La Baixada and the earthier, darker and more powerful like La Baixada. 4,730 bottles were filled in February 2025.
There were less than 250 liters of rain in Gratallops between November 2022 and October 2023, even less than in any of the previous five years. And in the spring, that is key, they only received 43 liters in four months. So, for the first time ever, Álvaro Palacios decided it was necessary to water the vines. But getting water was not easy. So, the grapes picked in 2023 were small and with concentrated juice. All in all, the harvest dates were more or less normal, finishing with l'Ermita the 11th of October.
In 2024, nature gave them a break after two years of severe draught and provided a delicate year like they had not seen for years. In March and April, they got 80 liters of rain, still moderate but much better. They had to continue watering the vines. During the summer the nights were cool, something they had not seen since 2021, but still they started harvesting at the end of August, a long and slow harvest that lasted for two months. At the end of the harvest, they got abundant rains that have extended to 2025. The wines have finesse and elegance, freshness and balance, and they have more color, as the cooler nights produce more coloring matter in the wines.
The 2023s are pretty, ethereal and approachable. The 2024s are more serious, a more vinous vintage with more extract and weight, wines for the long haul, with the contained energy and harmony of the great vintages.

In the late eighties, Alvaro met René Barbier, one of the rediscoverers and 'godfathers' of the Priorat. This tipped him to take a look at the forgotten wine region. Alvaro found vineyards here with very old vines. He knew immediately that he had discovered the area to be able to make absolute top wines. In 1989 he bought his first Priorat vineyard 'Finca Dofi' and in 1993 L'Ermita, a vineyard that is now considered one of the very best of the entire Priorat and is named after the chapel at the top of the vineyard.
With wines such as Finca Dofi and the now legendary L'Ermita he gained world fame and put the Priorat on the map as a wine region. All vineyards are processed on the basis of biological and / or dynamic principles to obtain the highest possible quality grapes and wine with the most natural character. Alvaro Palacios is barely 40 when he seems to have accomplished everything. Coming from a family of winegrowers - owners of the Bodegas Palacios Ramondo - as a young man in his twenties he learned the trade with Christian Moueix in the castles of Petrus and Trotanoy. Then he followed the catalan René Barbier in Priorato. Deeply impressed by ancient land and their qualitative potential, he decides to mine his own vineyard in this God-forsaken hole, 135 km south-west of Barcelona. According to Palacios' own words, the general belief is that "the yield is too low, the land is unworkable and requires a lot of manual labor" and that the chance of profitability is small. The sequel shows that the skeptics were wrong. The first millésime, namely the Ermita 1993, was immediately mentioned in the "superstars" club of Spanish wines. This cuvée, consisting of 80 to 90% Grenache Vieilles Vignes balanced by Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan Vieiles Vignes, has provoked exceptional reactions in Spain but also in the rest of the world. The ultra-modern company of Alvaro Palacios, dominating the village of Gratallops from the top of the hill, testifies to its decisive influence and ongoing efforts to revolutionize the Spanish wine industry. Alvaro Palacios, the architect of the success of the Ermita, summarizes with conviction: "The philosophy behind the vinification involves expressing the character of the terroir with the greatest transparency and purity."
The authoritative British wine magazine Decanter has named Alvaro Palacios Winemaker of the Year 2015. He is honored for his efforts to put Spain on the map in general and the regions of Bierzo and Priorat in particular worldwide. Palacios has illustrious predecessors. Last year, the brothers Perrin won from Chateau de Beaucastel, for which the honor went to Angelo Gaja, Robert Mondavi and the late Serge Hochar.
