Description
A beautiful wine from one of Italy's oldest and most renowned wineries, Marchese Antinori. This "noble" Chianti Classico Riserva comes from the renowned Tenuta Tignanello. The Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is Sangiovese enriched with notes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Renzo Cotarella and the extensive technical team at Marchesi Antinori are working hard to perfect their tannin management, and the beautiful results are clearly evident in this series of new releases of this classic vintage.
The growing season in Chianti Classico began with normal winter weather, both in terms of temperature and rainfall. Despite these climatic conditions, the vines began budbreak a week earlier than the seasonal average for this region. Spring was characterized by frequent rain showers and lower-than-average temperatures, especially in May, while June and July were hot and dry, uninterrupted by extreme heat. Scattered rainfall in August and a dry, windy period in September and October allowed the grapes to develop to perfect ripeness, guaranteeing excellent sugar levels and polyphenolic ripeness. Harvesting began in mid-September with Sangiovese and concluded in the first half of October with Cabernet.
Upon arrival at the cellar, the bunches were destemmed and gently crushed. The must was transferred to stainless steel vats where alcoholic fermentation took place for approximately one week. Maceration on the skins was managed with gentle pump-overs and délestage (rack and return) for intense extraction while preserving elegant and supple tannins. Malolactic fermentation, which occurred spontaneously, was completed towards the end of the year. The wine was then blended and aged in French and Hungarian oak barriques for approximately one year. Marchese Antinori Riserva was bottled and then aged in the bottle for a further twelve months before release.
The Tignanello estate is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico production zone, nestled between the Greve and Pesa river valleys. It covers nearly 800 hectares (319 acres), of which approximately 130 hectares (415 acres) are planted with vines. The vineyards consist primarily of the indigenous Sangiovese grape, along with non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The Marchese Antinori is a historic wine from the Antinori cellars, produced from grapes grown on the Tignanello estate since 2011. It is a wine that presents itself as the full expression of the quality and elegance of Sangiovese from this part of Tuscany.
The Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva is ruby red in color. On the nose, it offers intense notes of morello cherries, violets, and lavender, along with subtle hints of iron typical of Sangiovese and spicy notes of tobacco and leather. The bouquet is complemented by delicate hints of vanilla and cocoa powder. The palate is full-bodied, generous, and lively, with excellent, compact tannins that give it a long, lingering finish. An exceptional finish characterized by red fruit and licorice. Worthy of a Tignanello, but at less than half the price, it's highly recommended.

This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori shares the DNA of Tignanello. It is Sangiovese kissed with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of course, the wine is more accessible and open compared to Tignanello, and spiritually, this wine is a Chianti Classico. By that I mean that the elegant minerality of these soils and the sunny flavors of its environs are the determining characteristics. You get wildflower, iris, tart fruit and plum. The wine's enhanced mineral character, with dusty white rock, is what adds lasting complexity and depth.
Marchesi Antinori General Manager Renzo Cotarella tells me that 2021 is the best vintage he has ever overseen. Ever. He prefers it to recent classics like 2016 and 2010. There was frost in the spring, and the growing cycle was very long. This is something that most grapes, and especially Sangiovese, need in order to exhibit aromatic depth and flavor complexity. "This is an exceptional year," he says, citing the inner energy certainly exhibited by the wines from 2021.
I agree, mostly, but not unequivocally. I love the precision and tension inherent to these wines, but I didn't encounter that same breathless vertical lift and linearity that I remember so well in 2016, for example. That was a vintage that managed to effortlessly balance both power and elegance, which is by no means an easy feat. To me, 2021 has the elegance but not the same piercing power that you only get in cooler vintages when sugar and phenolic ripening line up seamlessly. So, while I love these wines, especially the Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori and the outstanding Tignanello, my money is still on 2016 as the better vintage, speaking generally. But zoom in on one wine and my money is on the 2021 Tignanello over everything else.

A youthful wine with aromas of esters, strawberries, red cherries, violets, roses, licorice and toast. The palate is gorgeous, with ripe, vibrant and velvety tannins, tight-knit acidity, a medium to full body and a crisp, super-savory finish. Drinkable now, but best in one to two years.

From: Chianti Classico: The Brilliant 2021s & Variable 2020s (Aug 2023)
The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine, despite showing some tightness because of its recent bottling just a week prior to this tasting. Dark fruit, spice, leather and tobacco are layered in a Riserva that exudes tension, energy and sheer power.

I tasted a wide range of wines from Antinori, including upcoming releases from recently acquired vineyards that will inform a new range of Gran Seleziones. As much as the higher-end wines are consistently outstanding, I have to say I find the showing of the entry-level wines more impressive, given their quality and production levels. There’s a lot of ambition these days at Antinori.

More information about Antinori
Marquis Piero Antinori is in charge and is assisted by his three daughters: Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. Funny those three A's. We are not going to bother you with all the awards that have been received over the years, because then this price list can no longer go through the letterbox. There are two red wines that are available on allocation and that one would like to get a few bottles from all over the world and that are Tignanello and Solaia and we also have these in our range at Grandcruwijnen.
In 1180, Ugo and Antinori di Rinuccino were officially named as owners of Castello di Combiate; a century later, the family who had moved to Florence were included in the register of the silk trade cooperative. In 1385, Giovanni di Piero, an indirect descendant, entered the wine guild as an apprentice. Since then, the wine-growing tradition of the Antinori family has been continuous. With the establishment of the Marchesi Antinori winery, the peak was reached in 1895 and already in 1898 the winery was built in San Casciano Val di Pesa, which is still the center of the widely branched group of properties in all major cultivation areas of Tuscany, Umbria. , Piemonte (since the early 90s through the purchase of the wine cellar Prunotto), Apulia and even California. The traditional house participating in the modern Tuscan wine-growing revolution owes much of its prestige to its former chief vinologist Giacomo Tachis, who produced exceptional wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello (especially sangiovese), Solaia (especially cabernet) and many others. the other was responsible. Vinologist Renzo Cotarella also created one of the best chardonnays in Italy in the Umbrian Castello della Sala.
