Description
Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Artista celebrates the unique character of each new vintage of Ornellaia. Every year since May 2009, at the release of Ornellaia 2006, a contemporary artist creates a work of art and a series of limited edition labels, inspired by the word chosen by the winemaker to describe the character of the new vintage.
For this 17th edition of Vendemmia d'Artista, artist Pascale Marthine Tayou from Cameroon was asked to interpret the theme of the 2022 edition, La Determinazione. The design is based on concentric circles, formed by a series of signs in different colours. These represent the energy generated by the interplay of many separate elements when they form a whole.
Each case (6x750ml) of Ornellaia Bolgheri doc Superiore 2022 La Determinazione contains one bottle with the special label and 5 bottles with the regular label.
The 2022 vintage of Ornellaia is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. The 2022 Ornellaia shows an expressive bouquet of black fruits with a hint of vanilla and tobacco. Such aromatic complexity is evident on the palate, with a broad and generous character. Thanks to the powerful tannin structure, the wine has a savory and persistent finish. Although the 2022 vintage was marked by long hot periods, Ornellaia is in no way lacking in elegance and liveliness. Parker ends his rating (97/100) with: " ......This vintage will appeal to die-hard Ornellaia enthusiasts "
This is a version of a half bottle of 0.375 ltr. Perfect for 3 glasses of this fantastic wine.

ABOUT VINTAGE 2022
Vintage 2022 began with a typical winter with temperatures around the multi-year average for the season, followed by a spring that started equally cool and dry. These conditions caused the buds to start to burst later than normal. A prolonged dry period began in May, lasting around 75 days, which made growth very challenging. The vines suffered significant water stress during the growth, flowering and véraison periods, resulting in a low-yielding harvest. Fortunately, the rains during the summer storms released energies, reactivating the physiology of the vines, allowing the grapes to ripen again. Rainfall decreased in September, a month that proved ideal for building sugar levels and for the aromas and tannins in the grapes, thanks in particular to the cool night temperatures.
The harvest took place under excellent conditions, which allowed the team to select the perfect date for each vineyard and variety. The Merlot harvest started on August 25th, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in September. The harvest ended on October 10th. The hand-picked clusters were collected in 15 kg crates, then manually sorted on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, and finally gently crushed. Since 2016, an optical selection has been introduced, in addition to the manual selection, to further increase the quality of the selection.
Each grape variety and each unique block of vineyards was vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel and concrete tanks at a temperature between 26 and 30°C for one week, followed by approximately 15 days of maceration, for a total of three weeks. For malolactic fermentation, mainly oak barrels were used, 70% of them new and 30% once used.
The wine matured for 18 months in barriques, in the cellars of Ornellaia. After the first 12 months of maturation, the wine was assembled, after which the wine rested for another 6 months in barriques. After bottling, this wine matured for another 12 months, before the wine was released.
CHECKING AUTHENTICITY
There has been a lot of fake on the market in recent years from established top houses from France, Italy and Spain. Grand Cru wines only buy from the wineries or the official importers. Be very wary of offers "too good to be true" You run the risk of having a fake bottle with a completely different content. Even if this is a real bottle you never know what journey a bottle has made. Wines can sometimes be in motion for a year and finally arrive at you from a warm truck, sea container and unconditioned wineries. Since 2001, every bottle of Ornellaia, regardless of size, has the brand name ORNELLAIA embossed on the bottom of the bottle. Since 2011, an authentication seal is applied to all bottles of Ornellaia by the estate before shipping. This seal contains information regarding the specific bottle in question, which is registered in a database that is accessible to consumers.

Tasted a few months after it was bottled, the Ornellaia 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia will be coming to market in March 2025. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine sees 18 months of aging with up to 70% new oak, but the trick, proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi tells me, is drawing from a large group of coopers with different toast levels and forests. "I don't want to make a wine of any one tonnellerie," he says. The oak element is crucial to the identity of this wine that reveals dark fruit, blackberry, sweet spice and cinnamon. Most of the vines were planted in the 1980s, and the average age of the plants is over 20 years old. Fruit comes from many parcels, including Bellaria, Bellaria Nuova, Bellaria Alta, Pero, Fosso, Vigna Vecchia and Stallina. Indeed, some 80 wines are made before final blending. The 2022 vintage will be remembered for its full-bodied appeal, concentrated fruit and generous oak renderings. Petit Verdot plays a slightly larger role in this vintage and was one of the surprise hits of 2022. It serves to elongate the wine and adds to its length. The wine's abundant fruit weight cedes to elegantly integrated tannins. This vintage will appeal to die-hard Ornellaia enthusiasts.
The 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is coming to market in March 2025, but the 2022 Masseto will not be released until September 2025. Today, Ornellaia counts 134 hectares of vines, including 11 hectares in Castagneto Carducci (with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Vermentino) that were added in 2022. Masseto covers 11 hectares of vines surrounded by forests. I tasted these wines with proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi at the estate. We were joined by the new Director of Production Marco Balsimelli, who worked in Bordeaux at the Laboratoire Oenologique Boissenot for 18 years before returning to his native Italy. He is joined by Ornellaia Winemaker Denise Cosentino and Vineyard Manager Giuliano Tarchi.

A Mediterranean-style wine. Stunning elegance on the nose, with vibrant dried eucalyptus leaves, flowers, restrained brambleberries and hints of black cherries, dried bananas, milk chocolate, cloves and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with elegant tannins and a touch of dust. It’s savory and well packed, with integrated, brilliant freshness and a ripe, fruity finish with a toasty aftertaste of blond tobacco. Try from 2026.

From: 2025 Tuscany Preview (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Ornellaia is a terrific wine for the year. Dark red-toned fruit, mocha, new leather, licorice and spice all take shape in a mid-weight, pliant Ornellaia that is quite alluring, even in the early going. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot, unusual for the elevated presence of Petit Verdot, which did better than Franc in 2022. The higher percentage of Petit Verdot comes through in the wine’s dark-leaning personality and also in the quality of tannins. More than anything else, the 2022 is a reminder of how important a tool blending is, especially in challenging years. I can’t wait to see how this ages. The 2022 Ornellaia is clearly among the most successful wines of the vintage.
- By Antonio Galloni on February 2025
These new releases from Ornellaia are very good examples for their respective vintages. Le Volte is especially fine in 2023. Its combination of floral top notes and vibrant fruit is quite appealing. The flagship Ornellaia shows how advantaged blends are in challenging vintages such as 2022. Fine tuning makes all the difference. That is so evident in tasting it next to some of the single-variety wines of Bolgheri. The 2022 is the last vintage vinified by Estate Director Axel Heinz, who left in early 2023. The new team led by Winemaker Denise Cosentino and Production Manager Marco Balsimelli finished and bottled the 2022s. Yields are down because of intense heat and drought. The winemaking team favored light extractions, with a bit more time on the skins than typical for the Merlot, as it was harder to extract. The 2023 whites strike me as quite giving and accessible, even in the early going.

Lodovico Antinori already had a head start at birth. The Antinoris have been among the Florentine merchant nobility for centuries and already joined the wine buyers' guild in 1385. Since then, there has always been one member of the family in the wine trade. The family estates in Tuscany were greatly expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the family gained a lot of experience in the winery. At the beginning of this century, she founded an influential trading company. Marquis Lodovico worked for a while in the family business, but decided to go his own way in the early 1980s. He created an extensive vineyard on Tenuta dell'Ornelllaia, a family estate in Bolgheri on the Mediterranean, 96 km from Florence.
This part of the Maremma not only has a beautiful wild nature, but is also a fertile agricultural area, a region with great potential for wine production. Lodovico's uncle, Marquis Incisa della Rochetta, had already drawn Bolgheri's attention to the wine world with his pioneering work on Tenuta San Guido and with his Sassiciaia, now regarded as one of the world's greatest red wines.
Lodovico Antinori followed in his uncle's footsteps in nearby Ornellaia, although he makes a completely different type of wine. He learned from a number of international wine authorities that the character of the Bolgheri soil resembled that of St.-Émilion and Pomerol in Bordeaux was ideal for the production of quality wine. The special feature of the Ornellaia vineyard - for Italian standards - is the high percentage of merlot. The assembly for Antinori's top wine, the red Ornellaia, contains 40% merlot. However, this grape comes into its own best at the vigna veccia (old vines) of the winery. Since 1987, this plot has supplied the raw material for a 100% Merlot cuvée called the Masseto. The grapes for this wine have been picked under a sunny September sky. After the long fermentation of 18-20 days, the wine is naturally transferred to tanks. After which a maturing process in new Barriques. The result is a wine with structure, very pure fruit and a beautiful balance.
Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Artista celebrates the unique character of each new vintage of Ornellaia.
