Description
The Casal das Freiras Colheita is a blend of the typical indigenous Portuguese grapes Aragonês, Castelão, Touriga Nacional with a little Cabernet Sauvignon. As with all Casal Das Freiras wines, the grapes are hand-picked. The grapes are completely destemmed and softly crushed, after which they ferment for a long period in stainless steel tanks with an extended period of maceration in concrete at a controlled temperature with frequent immersion of the must to obtain maximum extraction.
Also with this Colheita Tinto 50% of the wine remains in stainless steel and 50% stays in oak barrels for a period of 6 months before it is bottled. At Casal das Freiras they certainly want to give the Touriga and Aragones all the time to mature properly so the wine stays in the bottle for at least another 6 months before it is released.
The Colheito from Casal das Freiras has a lively fresh ruby red color. In the nose fresh aromas of red fruit and vegetal notes and very slightly a bit of tobacco. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied and elegant in taste with firm tannins and a balanced acidity. In our opinion this is an ideal wine for on the terrace (just cool it a bit as they do in Portugal), with the BBQ, spareribs or a well-made hamburger on the Green Egg or delicious as a standalone glass with good company. The Colheito Tinto is such a wine with a very good price / quality ratio that you have to pay double for in France or Italy, so the motto is certainly to try the Portuguese wines before the prices rise here as we are currently seeing in Spain.
Quinta Casal das Freiras is located in the Tejo northeast of Lisbon, in the heart of Portugal. The Tejo region is very fertile, partly due to its location on the river. The area is best known for its vineyards, olive trees, forests, the famous Lusitano horses and bullfighting. The area is beautiful and authentic with a varied landscape and beautiful historic towns such as Tomar, Constancia and Santarém and Golega.
With a focus on quality and balance, the wines of Tejo have been making great strides for several years now. Quality and affordability still go hand in hand here. Casal das Freiras is one of the top wine companies in the Tejo region and it is very likely that you will find Casal das Freiras wines on the wine list when you visit the better restaurants here.

1. Grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic
The rich flavour of lamb complements the ripe cherry and plum notes of the wine. Rosemary and garlic enhance the soft spiciness and emphasise the subtle tannins.
2. Beef stew with carrot and red wine sauce
Slowly braised meat benefits from the wine's firm structure and fruity character. Carrot adds a slightly sweet accent, which enhances the balance.
3. Portobello mushrooms stuffed with goat cheese and spinach
The earthy notes of portobello complement the complex fruit notes. Goat cheese provides creaminess, while spinach adds body without overpowering the wine.
4. Homemade paella with chicken and chorizo
A tasty dish in which the spicy character of chorizo and the rich broth come together with the fragrant fruitiness and soft oak tones of the wine.
5. Roasted lobster with lemon butter sauce and green asparagus
A refined combination: the delicate lobster accentuates the fresh acidity, while lemon and butter soften the mouthfeel and enhance the texture of the wine.
6. Black Angus ribeye with truffle oil and garlic butter
A luxurious choice for special occasions. The powerful, meaty flavour of the steak is balanced by the creamy truffle oil and garlic butter, creating harmony with the wine.

A wonderful piece of history in the heart of Portugal
Quinta Casal das Freiras winery is located 7 km south-west of the Portuguese Tomar in the district of Santarém on farmlands that once belonged to the Templars and later to the Order of Christ. The very old winery has been owned by one and the same family since the 19th century (1882), the current owners now represent the 4th and 5th generations of the family. The traditional farmhouse is set amongst vineyards, olive groves, corn and grain fields, forests and cork oaks, making it a unique and diverse agricultural landscape. Partly because of its location on the river, the area is very fertile and is very beautiful and authentic with a varied landscape and beautiful historic towns such as Tomar, Constancia and Santarém and Golega.
The ancient tradition of olive and vineyard culture is preserved by José Vidal, owner of Casal das Freiras. The estate with its ancient olive groves and vineyards of different ages falls under the wine region of Tejo in the heart of Portugal. The vineyards with exposure to the south cover an area of 12 hectares spread over 5 plots of different ages of 60, 45, 21, 10 and 3 years. Protected by the Serra d'Aire in the west from the Atlantic winds, the climate is characterized by cold winters and hot, dry summers that improve the grapes' optimal ripeness. The red Touriga Nacional, Castelão, Trincadeira, Aragonez, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet are most common in the slightly sloping clay limestone soils. Among the white varieties, the focus is mainly on Fernão Pires, Arinto, Rabo de Ovelha and Sauvignon Blanc.
In the winery, traditional technologies such as the Algerian amphoras and the stone mills for crushing grapes are combined with modern techniques. The winemaking, through a classic method of long-lasting maceration, produces beautiful red wines with pomegranate color, which are beautifully fruity and full of flavor. Refined light wood tones soften the tannins and do not drown out the fruity notes, so that the typical profile of the region is beautifully preserved.
Quinta Casal das Freiras is also developing some wine tourism activities. Visitors can admire the surrounding landscape and visit the winery, the old 20th century olive oil mill, and the wine tasting room. Here the wines can be tasted, accompanied by regional products such as olives, cheese, traditional sausages and jam. Depending on the time of year, it is still possible to view or even participate in some of the ongoing agricultural work, such as harvesting, trampling the grapes or picking olives.
