Description
Le Macchiole is a relatively small estate (24 Ha) in the Bolgheri in Tuscany, Italy. The estate was founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli. Before 1983, Eugenio's father and grandfather already produced wines, mainly for their own use. The name "Le Macchiole" means "The place where it all began". The estate is best known for its varietal wines, especially the wines made from Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. With the 1987 harvest, the first wines were commercially marketed. Especially in these early years, Eugenio and Cinzia produced wines from several grape varieties, with an emphasis on Bordeaux blends. From the mid-1990s, they specialized in wines made from a single grape variety.
Sadly, Eugenio passed away in 2002, he was only 40 years old. At the moment, “Le Macchiole” is managed by Cinzia, his widow. The first wine made under her management (since 1994) is the Messorio, a 100% Merlot wine that was aged for 20 months in wooden barrels (barriques) and bottled without filtration. It is without doubt one of the best Merlots from Italy and can be compared to the best Merlots from Bordeaux. The total production is around 9000 bottles per year.
Le Macchiole has become a reference for Bolgheri. In 2008, their top wine Messorio was rated 100/100 in WineSpectator. The entry-level wine Rosso 'Le Macchiole' now also falls under the DOC Bolgheri appellation and contains merlot, cabernet franc and syrah. Entry-level is actually a bit insulting because the Rosso is a very fine Bolgheri and unlike the Messorio, Paleo and Scrio, this wine is still reasonably priced.
The Le Macchiole Rosso has matured for 6 months in 1st and 2nd year barriques. In the glass the wine has a beautiful garnet red color with some purple hues. In the nose this beautiful Bolgheri has light spicy accents of green pepper with a light vanilla tone and pleasant red fruit aromas. Very elegant and refined. This is a very nice Rosso made by one of the very best wineries in Bolgheri.

The Le Macchiole 2022 Bolgheri Rosso is currently on the market with a new vintage arriving soon. The 2022 growing season was hot and dry. In comparison, 2023 was hot with more rain toward the end of the season. This expression shows terrific fruit definition and firmness, with present but mild tannins at the back, and unexpected freshness that does the trick. The blend is Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah that sees a quick 12 days of skin maceration and is partially aged in cement and partially in oak.
I was granted a preview taste of Cinzia Merli's top three reds—Scrio, Paleo and Messorio. They will be released in one year's time.

This is really polished and gentle, with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It's medium-bodied with a creamy texture and a long and expressive finish of red fruit, stone and thyme. Drink or hold.

From: New Releases from the Tuscan Maremma (Dec 2024)
The 2022 Bolgheri Rosso is a soft, easygoing red to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry fruit, pipe tobacco, cedar and spice open nicely, giving this mid-weight Rosso plenty of charm. Soft contours wrap it all together in style.
- By Antonio Galloni on May 2024
This is a stellar set of 2021s from Le Macchiole. What impressed me most this year is how distinctive the three main reds are. In recent years, proprietor Cinzia Merli and her team have introduced numerous refinements in farming, winemaking and élevage that give the wines a bit more nuance and overall freshness than in the past.
One of the keys to the 2021 growing season at Le Macchiole is a healthy amount of rain that fell over the winter months. There were some frost issues in April, but mostly cold weather served to delay fruit set and flowering, pushing timing back to more ‘normal’ parameters that are less common these days. The central part of summer was quite warm, which may explain the intense concentration found in some of the 2021s, most notably Paleo Rosso. Harvest began in late August for the whites and the Merlot for the Bolgheri Rosso, followed by the Merlot for Messorio and then the Syrah. Rain at the end of September pushed the Cabernet Franc harvest back a touch. Overall, the wines are deep and quite intense. I expect they will be even better with more time in bottle.
