Description
Domaine de la Pousse d'Or and their Grand Cru Clos de la Roche
Domaine de la Pousse d'Or is one of the most respected estates in Volnay and the Côte d'Or. Under the leadership of Benoît Landanger, they strive for maximum expression of terroir through biodynamic viticulture, low yields, and traditional vinification. Clos de la Roche is one of their top Grand Crus, where Pinot Noir is treated with the utmost care to reveal the unique chalky soil and its subtle elegance. Extensive background information about the estate is available under the "Winery" tab.
The terroir of Clos de la Roche and its influence on style
Clos de la Roche is located in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis, in the northern Côte de Nuits. The slope faces east, and the soils consist of limestone and marl with rocky inclusions. This substrate structure forces the vines to develop deep roots and ensures excellent drainage. The chalky subsoil imparts minerality, tension, and length to the wines.
The location and climate allow the grapes to ripen gradually. This produces Pinot Noir with finesse, pure fruit, and a natural balance between concentration and elegance. In good vintages like 2022, this promises a Grand Cru with depth and refinement.
Grape, vinification and maturation of the 2022 Clos de la Roche
The 2022 Clos de la Roche is 100 percent Pinot Noir, sourced from carefully selected plots within the Grand Cru region. At Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, the vines are managed organically/biodynamically and the harvest is carried out by hand. Vinification follows traditional methods: gentle extraction, careful temperature control, and extended oak aging without excessive wood influence.
The wine is aged for approximately 15 to 18 months in oak barrels, a controlled portion of which is new wood, ensuring the wood influence remains refined and the Pinot fruit remains bright. After aging, the wine is briefly aged in the bottle before release. This method ensures balance, lasting structure, and aging potential.
Color, aroma and flavor profile of the 2022 Clos de la Roche
The wine displays a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose opens with aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and a hint of raspberry. After aeration, floral notes emerge, such as violets and roses, along with subtle herbal, earthy, and mineral notes typical of chalky soils.
On the palate, the structure is elegant and sharp. The tannins are fine-grained, the acidity creates tension, and the fruity notes are supported by minerality and a subtle earthy undertone. The mid-palate is full without being heavy. Its concentration and balance make the wine suitable for enjoyment now, but also for storing for refinement.
The finish is long and lingering, with a mix of dark fruit, soft spices, and mineral tension. The combination of ripe fruit, elegant tannins, and terroir-driven minerality makes the 2022 Clos de la Roche a Grand Cru with potential for the next 20 years.
