Description
Domaine Leflaive Clavoillon Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru 2022
The 2022 Domaine Leflaive Clavoillon Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru is a refined white wine that continues the rich tradition of the Côte de Beaune. This wine exemplifies the quality and precision that characterizes Domaine Leflaive.
History of Domaine Leflaive
Domaine Leflaive traces its origins back to 1717, when Claude Leflaive founded the estate in Puligny-Montrachet. Joseph Leflaive, who took over the estate in the early 20th century, was a pioneer in improving the vineyards after the phylloxera crisis. Under the leadership of his daughter Anne-Claude Leflaive, who has managed the estate since 1990, the estate transitioned to biodynamic viticulture, resulting in world-class wines.
The Puligny-Montrachet region
Puligny-Montrachet is located in the Côte de Beaune, the heart of white Burgundy. The region is known for its chalky soils and temperate climate, ideal for growing Chardonnay. The Clavoillon Premier Cru vineyard, located north of Les Pucelles, is one of the most prized plots in Puligny-Montrachet.
Wine growing and production
The grapes for Clavoillon are harvested by hand from a 4.79-hectare plot with clay-limestone soils. The wine is grown biodynamically, respecting nature and the ecosystem. After harvest, the grapes undergo a gentle pneumatic pressing, followed by a 24-hour settling period. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, approximately 22% of which are new, sourced from the Allier and Vosges regions. After 12 months of aging in barrels, a further 6 months follow in stainless steel tanks, with light fining and filtration if necessary.
Color, smell and taste
The 2022 Clavoillon has a bright, golden color. The nose reveals aromas of citrus fruits, white flowers, and a mineral note. On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with a pleasant texture and a long, elegant finish. The balance of fruit, minerality, and acidity makes it an excellent choice for lovers of refined white Burgundy.
Maturation potential
Although the 2022 vintage is young, it has the potential to develop further in the coming years. Its structure and balance suggest it will be at its best until 2035, with a more complex palate and an even more elegant finish.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon unwinds in the glass with a gently reductive bouquet of pear, sweet citrus zest, wet stones and wheat toast. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy, it's bright and saline, with a long, penetrating finish.
The 2022 vintage has turned out very nicely at Domaine Leflaive. Picking decisions at this address in recent years, under the direction of Pierre Vincent, have tended to privilege freshness, and a couple of wines appeared to have been picked a little on the early side if one's tastes lean toward the texture and plenitude that only full maturity can impart; but overall, this is a strong vintage that is developing a touch of noble reduction in bottle and which is going to age with grace. As usual, élevage began with a year in barrel (from a variety of coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin) followed by six months or so in tank on the lees before bottling under Diam 30.

From: Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)
The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Clavoillon 1er Cru has a very fine bouquet with dew-speckled green apples, petrichor and lime gradually unfolding in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with an almost piercing line of acidity, yet it remains very well-balanced with ample weight on the sapid finish. Very fine.
- By Neal Martin on October 2023
I met winemaker Pierre Vincent and proprietor Brice de la Morandière in the early evening to taste through not the 2022s but the 2021s, as they now only show the most recent bottled vintage. “We had frost four times in April, and downy mildew was prevalent, which meant a lot of sorting,” Vincent explains in their nearly finished winery. “We lost 60% of the crop on average and 80% in the worst-affected vintages. We began the picking on September 21 [I should remind readers we are talking about 2021 here!]” We also discussed changes in the modus operandi at Leflaive, which includes using more larger-sized barrels, particularly 350-liter barrels comprising around 40% of the total. De la Morandière also mentioned using ultrasound to clean the barrels so they can be used for longer. There was also an interesting discussion about the recent improvement in the Puligny Combettes. Vincent suggests this was due to them rethinking the sap flow in the vines, enhanced by composting the vineyard and retraining the vines to combat millerandage.

Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is a name that rings a bell. Chardonnay, tradition and progress come together beautifully here.
History of Domaine Leflaive
The story of Domaine Leflaive begins in the 18th century but truly takes shape in the twentieth. Joseph Leflaive, a former marine engineer, took over the family estate in 1905. After the phylloxera crisis he bought additional plots, replanted the vineyards, and started bottling under his own label. That laid the foundation for the estate as we know it today.
After his death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo took the lead. They strengthened the name both in Burgundy and abroad. In the 1990s Anne-Claude Leflaive stepped in. She made a bold move by converting the estate entirely to biodynamic farming. Since 2015, Brice de la Morandière, Anne-Claude’s nephew, has been in charge. He combines respect for tradition with innovations such as the sustainable cellar built in 2012.
Location in Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive is located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, a small village in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This region is known worldwide as the birthplace of Chardonnay. The limestone-rich soil and perfect exposure create wines with tension, freshness, and depth. Here everything revolves around terroir: small differences in slope or soil type give wines with their own unique character.
Grape varieties at Domaine Leflaive
The focus is entirely on Chardonnay. No red wine is made. That may sound limited, but this dedication is exactly what made the estate great. From a simple Bourgogne Blanc to the most legendary Grand Crus: all come from the same grape, yet from different parcels. This way you taste the pure differences between soil and location.
Specialities and famous vineyards
Domaine Leflaive owns parcels in some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Think Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. In addition, there are impressive Premier Crus such as Les Pucelles, Clavoillon, and Les Folatières. They also make a distinctive Meursault and an approachable Bourgogne Blanc. The latter comes from vineyards just outside Puligny and shows that even the entry-level wines at Leflaive carry plenty of character.
Biodynamic viticulture and cellar techniques
Since 1997 Domaine Leflaive has worked fully biodynamically. That means using natural preparations and following the rhythms of nature. No artificial chemicals, but full attention to the health of the soil. In the cellar the approach is patient: slow pressing, fermentations with minimal intervention, one year of ageing in oak barrels followed by six months in neutral vats. Since 2012 this has taken place in a remarkable cellar known as the ‘Egg Cellar’. This round building, insulated with straw and wood, is energy-efficient and designed to let the wines mature perfectly.
Interesting facts about Domaine Leflaive
- Before becoming a winegrower, Joseph Leflaive helped build the first French submarine.
- The estate’s Grand Cru Montrachet is only released after ten years of ageing in the cellar, so it can show its full complexity.
- Anne-Claude Leflaive received international acclaim as a pioneer in biodynamics and was awarded several prizes for her contribution.
