Description
Château Talbot owes its name to the heroic English commander Connetable Talbot, who was killed in 1453 at the Battle of Castillon. The largest and one of the oldest Château of Saint Julien, is ideally situated a short distance from the Gironde, where the vineyards lie on a subsoil of fine gravel and produce one of the most beautiful red wines of Saint Julien. The popular Château Talbot makes wines with a good price-quality ratio. In the last 10 years, a lot has been invested in equipment and the vineyards and that is mainly why they make good consistent top Bordeaux year in and year out, which are still relatively affordable.
The 2022 Talbot is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The grapes were hand-harvested from 9th to 28th September. This year's Talbot is 13.5% alcohol and was aged for 15 months in French barrels (60% new). The grapes are from 42-year-old vines spread across 94.3 hectares in Saint-Julien. The 2022 Talbot is impressive, and if it lives up to all its promises will likely emerge as one of the finest wines from Saint-Julien since the 1980s. Relaxing in the glass with aromas of cherry, blackberry and cassis mingling with hints of violet and pencil lead, it is medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a layered core of fruit, rich, structuring tannins and a long, vibrant finish.
FACT: Under the tab: Attachment you will find the official factsheet and we will send it to you digitally when you order this wine. Also worth mentioning that we buy the (Bordeaux) wines directly and never through intermediaries because then we do not know which journeys the wine has made and how it has been treated. The wines come from the cellars of the Chateau directly to our conditioned Warehouse in Dordrecht where all our wines are stored .

The 2022 Talbot is especially impressive, and if it fulfills all its promise, it is likely to emerge as this large Saint-Julien property's most exciting wine since the 1980s. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries and cassis mingled with hints of violets and pencil lead, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a layered core of fruit, rich structuring tannins and a long, lively finish. It's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot that's being matured in 60% new oak.

The tannins really are integrated and fill out across the palate. The texture is so beautiful and refined. Medium- to full-bodied and crunchy, with lovely texture and refinement.

The 2022 Talbot was bottled in May. Estate Director Jean-Michel Laporte commented that he sees it as a combination of 2018, 2019 and 2020, though better than those vintages. The 2022 has a tightly knit bouquet, crisp and clean, a little "cooler" in style than I recall and I mean that in a positive way. It neatly shrugs off the warmth of that growing season. There's wonderful purity of fruit here, tinged with tobacco and light chimney soot scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit—a quintessential Talbot, with a little more horsepower than recent vintages but fine precision and structure on the finish. I appreciate the finesse of the tannins and the weight throughout this Saint-Julien.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Talbot was picked September 9-28 at 40hL/ha, slightly higher than other estates, matured in 60% new oak. Jean-Michel Laporte told me that he did a slightly longer maceration than in 2019 and 2020 during its 3.5 weeks cuvaison. It has a fragrant bouquet, well-defined with black cherries, cassis, iris and touches of brown spice. The palate is well balanced with fine weight and depth, the 13% vin de presse landing backbone. Detailed and focused, it has the same mineral spine as Gruaud Larose nearby. Quite long and lively with a tingle of white and black pepper on the finish. This is a delicious Talbot, but it is the one Saint-Julien that needs a little more depth in the middle. Nevertheless, it should age for many, many years and appeal to those seeking classicism in this vintage.

The interaction between man and nature and an age-old knowledge of this excellent terroir, produce a different wine every year, but a wine that is certainly complex and beautifully balanced.
