Deep, complex, elegant: the 2022 Château Smith Haut-Lafitte Grand Cru Classé de Graves.

History of Château Smith Haut-Lafitte in Pessac-Léognan

The estate was founded in 1365 by the Du Boscq family. In the 18th century, the Scotsman George Smith bought it and added his name. In 1958, it was acquired by Louis Eschenauer, and in 1991, Daniel and Florence Cathiard acquired it, after which they invested in the restoration of the 16th-century tower and underground cellars. Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte has been recognized as a Cru Classé de Graves for both red and white wines since 1953 (and renewed in 1959). The 78-hectare project is located in Martillac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on the Graves Günziennes gravel terraces.

Owners and sustainable wine growing policy

Daniel and Florence Cathiard are the current owners. They are committed to organic and biodynamic management using original root cuttings from their own nursery on Ile de Lalande. They encourage biodiversity through hedges, trees, and beehives on the estate and use horses to work the white vineyards. Compost and natural plowing enhance soil health.

Climate, terroir and location of the vineyard

Located just south of Bordeaux, the estate benefits from a temperate maritime climate with warm summers and mild winters. The heavy, 6-meter-deep gravel soil ensures optimal drainage and reflects sunlight, promoting ripening. With 67 hectares of red and 11 hectares of white vines, the estate is located on a single, homogeneous plot, contributing to the consistency and quality of the wines.

Overview of wines from Château Smith Haut-Lafitte

The estate produces six wines: Château Smith Haut-Lafitte (Grand Vin) red and white, plus the second wines Les Hauts de Smith (red, white) and Le Petit Haut Lafitte (red, white). Red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 63%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (6%), and Petit Verdot (1%). White wines are primarily Sauvignon Blanc (90%), supplemented with Sémillon (5%) and Sauvignon Gris (5%).

Château Smith Haut‑Lafitte 2022 Grand Cru Classé red wine

The 2022 edition is a powerful and elegant blend with Cabernet Sauvignon as the driving force, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Harvested by hand with strict selection. Fermentation took place in oak tanks at 26–28°C, followed by 18–20 months of aging in new oak barriques. There is no fining or filtering, which enhances the texture and depth. This is a 1.5-liter magnum—even more delicious, festive, and with a longer drinking window.

Color, aroma and taste of the 2022 vintage

This wine displays a deep, dark purple core with bright purple hues on the rim. The nose reveals aromas of cassis, blackberries, and dark cherries, with subtle notes of graphite, cedar, and spices. On the palate, a fine, firm tannin structure unfolds, with lively acidity and minerality. Flavor notes of dark fruit (cassis, plum), exotic spices, and a hint of licorice are supported by a mineral base and beautifully integrated oak influences. The finish is long, intense, and structured, with grip and warmth.

Why this red Grand Cru is worth it

The 2022 Château Smith Haut-Lafitte offers a rare balance between power and finesse. It offers both immediate enjoyment and development potential for decades to come. Critics praise its structure and purity, scoring around 96 points. This wine appeals to serious collectors and vinologists who appreciate depth and elegance.

Château Smith Haut-Lafitte has 56ha of vineyard and is owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard. Since their purchase in 1990, the quality has increased enormously, thanks to the works in the vineyard and the investments in a state-of-the-art installation. In 2010 these efforts were rewarded by Parker with a score of 100/100 for their 2009 vintage. Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte is a very demonstrative wine, very balanced and extremely concentrated with great aging potential. Visitors to the castle can also have a very luxurious dinner, stay overnight or enjoy the 'vinotherapy' in 'Les Sources de Caudalie'.
