Description
Deep, complex, elegant: the 2022 Château Smith Haut-Lafitte Grand Cru Classé de Graves.
History of Château Smith Haut-Lafitte in Pessac-Léognan
The estate was founded in 1365 by the Du Boscq family. In the 18th century, the Scot George Smith bought it and added his name. In 1958, it was taken over by Louis Eschenauer and in 1991, Daniel and Florence Cathiard acquired it, after which they invested in the restoration of the 16th century tower and underground cellars. Château Smith‑Haut‑Lafitte has been recognised as a Cru Classé de Graves for both red and white wines since 1953 (and renewed in 1959). The 78-hectare initiative is located in Martillac, in the Pessac‑Léognan appellation, on Graves Günziennes gravel terraces.
Owners and sustainable wine growing policy
Daniel and Florence Cathiard are the current owners. They focus on organic and biodynamic management with original root cuttings from their own nursery on Ile de Lalande. They encourage biodiversity through hedges, trees and beehives on the estate and use horses to work the white vineyards. Compost and natural ploughing strengthen the health of the soil.
Climate, terroir and location of the winery
Situated just south of Bordeaux, the estate benefits from a temperate maritime climate with warm summers and mild winters. The heavy gravel soil, 6 metres deep, ensures optimum drainage and reflection of sunlight, which promotes maturation. With 67 ha of red and 11 ha of white plantings, the estate is located on a single homogeneous plot, which contributes to consistency and quality in the wines.
Overview of wines from Château Smith Haut‑Lafitte
The house produces six wines: red and white Château Smith Haut‑Lafitte (Grand Vin), plus the second wines Les Hauts de Smith (red, white) and Le Petit Haut Lafitte (red, white). Red wines are typically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon (ca 63%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (1%). White wines are mainly Sauvignon Blanc (90%), supplemented with Sémillon (5%) and Sauvignon Gris (5%).
Château Smith Haut‑Lafitte 2022 Grand Cru Classé red wine
The 2022 edition is a powerful and elegant blend with Cabernet Sauvignon as the driving force, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Harvest was manual with strict selection. Fermentation took place in oak tanks at 26–28 °C, followed by maturation for 18–20 months in new oak barriques. There is no fining or filtering, which enhances the texture and depth.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2022 vintage
This wine shows a deep, dark purple core with bright purple hues in the rim. In the nose aromas of cassis, blackberries, dark cherries, with subtle accents of graphite, cedar and herbs. In the mouth a fine, firm tannin structure presents itself with lively acidity and minerality. Taste notes of dark fruit (cassis, plum), exotic spices and a hint of licorice are supported by a mineral base and beautifully integrated oak influences. The finish is long, intense and structured, with grip and warmth.
Why this red Grand Cru is worth it
The 2022 Château Smith Haut‑Lafitte offers a rare balance between power and finesse. It has both immediate drinking pleasure and development potential for decades to come. Critics praise its structure and purity, with scores around 96 points. This wine appeals to serious collectors and oenologists who appreciate depth and elegance.

With a somber, slightly introverted character characterized by notes of licorice, gentian, spices and dark wild berries, the 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte possesses a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and dense palate with a fleshy core of fruit and a generously extracted structure with an assertive tannic frame that requires time to mellow. Concluding with a long, dense and gentian-inflected finish, it needs time to digest its élevage and should gain harmony and balance with some time in the cellar.

The vivid fruit character here is so impressive for this hot and dry vintage. It's medium- to full-bodied, showing gorgeous crushed grapes and dark berries. With density, clarity and beauty, it really speaks of great cabernet sauvignon. The tannins are integrated and go long, taking you deep and complete on the palate. 64% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Seems almost drinkable now but needs at least five years of bottle age. Drink after 2029.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte is silky, elegant and nuanced. It's all there. A wine of precision and class, the 2022 is so impressive. Refined, supple tannins wrap around a core of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, espresso and mocha. I find the 2022 a bit buttoned up today, but that is probably a very good thing for its long-term prospects. I look forward to seeing it age.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte is a regal, elegant wine. Succulent inky fruit, licorice, spice, lavender and mocha open in a gracious, sublime Grand Vin. Here, too, the wine’s persistence and energy are notable. The Cabernet is especially evident this year, in both the wine’s flavor profile and overall structural feel. In many vintages, the Grand Vin is more immediate and alluring. The 2022 is quite reticent.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte was cropped at 29hL/ha between 5 and 30 September, undergoing half the extraction, aged in 60% new oak for a planned 18 months. It is fragrant and very pure on the nose: beautiful blackberry, raspberry and liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very elegant and focused, fine-boned with an exceptionally pure and caressing tobacco-tinged finish. This is going to grow to be a wonderful, delicious Smith Haut Lafitte. 14.5% alcohol.
