Description
Château Pichon Baron-Longueville has existed since 1694. Château Pichon Baron, Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is one of the historic vineyards of Bordeaux. A strict selection policy, in the vineyard and in the cellars, guarantees the elaboration of the Grand Vin, Château Pichon Baron, which represents the pure expression of this unique terroir.
The Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2020 is a blend of 50% merlot, 46% cabernet sauvignon and 4% petit verdot. It ages for approx. 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50% are new. This label represents 25% of the total harvest. Deep purple-black in colour, it bursts with uninhibited scents of crushed black plums, ripe boysenberries and black cherry preserves, leading to nuances of ground cloves, liquorice and rose oil. The medium-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruits and a soft texture, which delivers just enough freshness to lift the long, energetic finish. Perfect value for money and the wine has received well over 90 points from all wine critics, while this is 25% of the price of its big brother, the Pichon Longueville.

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is more Cabernet-driven, echoing the style of the grand vin, as opposed to the more supple, forward Tourelles. Offering up aromas of sweet dark berries and espresso roast, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, built around powdery structuring tannins.

Château Pichon Baron
Pauillac Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2022 | $46
A solid version, with a packed core of blackberry, black currant and black cherry reduction notes wrapped in licorice root, bay leaf and violet. A growl of cast iron emerges through the finish, giving this a burly, earth-driven feel. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2036. 5,568 cases made.

From: A Place Beyond Praise: Bordeaux 2022 (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron was very impressive from barrel. Now in bottle, it has a kind of unassuming bouquet that unfolds in the glass. This is very nuanced, with hints of black truffle filtering through the black fruit and a little sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and beautifully balanced with a fresh, slightly citric finish. I like the energy in this Les Griffons and it should age well in bottle.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is super-refined from start to finish. Everything speaks to balance. Dark red/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, mocha, dried flowers and blood orange infuse the 2022 with notable character and class. Silky, polished tannins wrap it all together in grand style. The 2022 spent 18 months in French oak, 40% new, an approach that worked beautifully.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Les Grifons de Pichon Baron is super-impressive. Silky, medium in body and gracious, the 2022 is incredibly charming. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice are beautifully delineated. This classy Pauillac is showing very well today. The Grifons is a serious second wine that will benefit from a few years of cellaring.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron represents 22% of the production and is matured in 40% new oak. It has a very focused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed violet and a light marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with sculpted tannins, very tensile, intense yet weightless toward the long graphite-infused finish. This is just superb.
