The Château Pavie vineyard covers 42 hectares. It's a large estate, yet it encompasses diverse terroirs, each with its own unique microclimate. Château Pavie is often one of the last wineries to complete its harvest. They operate responsibly: 70% of the vineyard is now organic, and they aim for 100%.
Today, Gerard Perse is the man in charge. A self-made man and millionaire from Paris. The son of a painter, he took over a small grocery store in a suburb in 1976 and subsequently achieved enormous success with franchise supermarkets for Champion (Carrefour). Until, finally, he decided to focus solely on wine. In 1998, after acquiring several other wineries, he purchased Château Pavie. In the region, he is seen as a disgrace to Saint-Émilion wines because of the techniques he employed, such as the premature cutting of unripe grape bunches to limit production and enhance quality. Considered an unheard-of waste at the time, today almost everyone does it. The success of his wines has significantly enhanced his reputation. Not only Parker, but also other international wine critics give them the highest scores. And wine with a story.
The 2022 Château Pavie is a blend of 52% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from 34-year-old vines spread across 42 hectares in Saint-Émilion. The soil is divided into three distinct areas. First, there's the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, located approximately 85 meters above the Dordogne River. This consists of clay and limestone soils on limestone with marine fossils (two-thirds of the vineyard). Next comes the Côte Pavie, the "mid-mountain range," 55 meters above the Dordogne River, facing south. This consists of brown clay-limestone soils with a fine texture. Finally, there's the "Pied de Côte," consisting of sandy, sandy-clay, and sandy-gravel soils. Prune to eight buds for the old vines and to six buds for the young vines. Thinning and leaf stripping are tailored to each plot. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels. Finally, the wine is aged in 75% new oak and 25% one-year-old barrels. This is a 1.5-liter magnum—even more delicious, festive, and with a longer drinking window.

The depth and intensity is really out of this world. The richness is there, but it's all in balance and has an almost weightless feel to it. It's medium- to full-bodied with purity and definition, and the magic of limestone soils keeps the pH low, giving energy, bright acidity and verve. Terrific young red. 51% merlot, 32% cabernet franc and 17% cabernet sauvignon.

The 2022 Pavie turned out beautifully. Although a touch reticent post-bottling, the 2022 impresses with its notable energy and vibrancy. Dark-toned fruit, leather, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel stain the palate. The 2022 offers tons of textural intensity but without the overt weight that was once such a signature here. I can't wait to see how it ages.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Pavie is a unique wine that celebrates a number of milestones for the château. It marks the 20th anniversary of Pavie under the helm of Gerard and Chantal Perse, who have taken this once sleepy property to brilliant highs. Two thousand twenty-two is also the first vintage for Pavie since the incorporation of the Pavie Decesse and Bellevue Mondotte properties. From my perspective, it is always sad to see the loss of historical estates, even if they are relatively small because it is a loss of culture. In terms of the wine, it is superb. Black fruit, mocha, chocolate, licorice and spice add to an impression of virile intensity. Many recent vintages of Pavie have hinted towards a more vibrant style, but the 2022 is very strongly marked by the heat and drought of the year, the yields that are lower than typical and the harvest that started late in relative terms. In my view, the 2022 is a bit pushed, at least today. Huge tannins and a strong torrefaction oak imprint need time to soften, and that may or may not happen with élevage.

Harvest started on September 19 at Pavie, later than most properties, but the same as 2020. Yields were 31 hectoliters per hectare, quite low for the Right Bank. Not surprisingly, the 2022s are pretty rich wines with a good deal of baby fat. I am looking forward to seeing where the wines go.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Pavie was picked from 19 September to 1 October at 31hL/ha and matured in 75% new oak. The estate now comprises 42 hectares as it has absorbed Pavie-Decesse and Bellevue-Mondotte, ergo, these names are no more. This demonstrates a little over-ripeness on the nose: macerated black cherries, kirsch, cassis and a touch of fresh prune. Does that translate across onto the palate? Actually, no. It is undoubtedly decadent and rich, but it retains balance and delivers a very velvety texture, with mouth-filling tannins. Powerful and yet undeniably harmonious, it feels plush and luxuriant on the finish, with a touch of dark chocolate lingering on the aftertaste. I am intrigued to revisit this after bottling and, because of the aromatics and not the palate, I err on the side of caution, though repouring, it feels slightly fresher. 14.47% alcohol. NB It comes in a specially-designed engraved bottle without a label.

The son of a painter, he took over a small grocery store in a suburb in 1976 and subsequently achieved enormous success with franchise supermarkets for Champion (Carrefour). Until, finally, he decided to focus solely on wine. In 1998, after acquiring several other wineries, he purchased Château Pavie. In the region, he is seen as a disgrace to Saint-Émilion wines because of the techniques he employed, such as the premature cutting of unripe grape bunches to limit production and enhance quality. Considered an unheard-of waste at the time, today almost everyone does it. The success of his wines has significantly enhanced his reputation. Not only Parker, but also other international wine critics give them the highest scores. And wine with a story.
The 2022 Château Pavie is a blend of 52% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from 34-year-old vines spread across 42 hectares in Saint-Émilion. The soil is divided into three distinct areas. First, there's the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, located approximately 85 meters above the Dordogne River. This consists of clay and limestone soils on limestone with marine fossils (two-thirds of the vineyard). Next comes the Côte Pavie, the "mid-mountain range," 55 meters above the Dordogne River, facing south. This consists of brown clay-limestone soils with a fine texture. Finally, there's the "Pied de Côte," consisting of sandy, sandy-clay, and sandy-gravel soils. Prune to eight buds for the old vines and to six buds for the young vines. Thinning and leaf stripping are tailored to each plot. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels. Finally, the wine is aged in 75% new oak and 25% one-year-old barrels. This is a 1.5-liter magnum—even more delicious, festive, and with a longer drinking window.

The depth and intensity is really out of this world. The richness is there, but it's all in balance and has an almost weightless feel to it. It's medium- to full-bodied with purity and definition, and the magic of limestone soils keeps the pH low, giving energy, bright acidity and verve. Terrific young red. 51% merlot, 32% cabernet franc and 17% cabernet sauvignon.

The 2022 Pavie turned out beautifully. Although a touch reticent post-bottling, the 2022 impresses with its notable energy and vibrancy. Dark-toned fruit, leather, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel stain the palate. The 2022 offers tons of textural intensity but without the overt weight that was once such a signature here. I can't wait to see how it ages.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Pavie is a unique wine that celebrates a number of milestones for the château. It marks the 20th anniversary of Pavie under the helm of Gerard and Chantal Perse, who have taken this once sleepy property to brilliant highs. Two thousand twenty-two is also the first vintage for Pavie since the incorporation of the Pavie Decesse and Bellevue Mondotte properties. From my perspective, it is always sad to see the loss of historical estates, even if they are relatively small because it is a loss of culture. In terms of the wine, it is superb. Black fruit, mocha, chocolate, licorice and spice add to an impression of virile intensity. Many recent vintages of Pavie have hinted towards a more vibrant style, but the 2022 is very strongly marked by the heat and drought of the year, the yields that are lower than typical and the harvest that started late in relative terms. In my view, the 2022 is a bit pushed, at least today. Huge tannins and a strong torrefaction oak imprint need time to soften, and that may or may not happen with élevage.

Harvest started on September 19 at Pavie, later than most properties, but the same as 2020. Yields were 31 hectoliters per hectare, quite low for the Right Bank. Not surprisingly, the 2022s are pretty rich wines with a good deal of baby fat. I am looking forward to seeing where the wines go.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Pavie was picked from 19 September to 1 October at 31hL/ha and matured in 75% new oak. The estate now comprises 42 hectares as it has absorbed Pavie-Decesse and Bellevue-Mondotte, ergo, these names are no more. This demonstrates a little over-ripeness on the nose: macerated black cherries, kirsch, cassis and a touch of fresh prune. Does that translate across onto the palate? Actually, no. It is undoubtedly decadent and rich, but it retains balance and delivers a very velvety texture, with mouth-filling tannins. Powerful and yet undeniably harmonious, it feels plush and luxuriant on the finish, with a touch of dark chocolate lingering on the aftertaste. I am intrigued to revisit this after bottling and, because of the aromatics and not the palate, I err on the side of caution, though repouring, it feels slightly fresher. 14.47% alcohol. NB It comes in a specially-designed engraved bottle without a label.
