Description
Domaine de Léoville, one of the oldest estates in the Medoc, belonged to some of the wealthiest and most influential noble French families before being acquired by the Las Cases family. As a result of the French Revolution, the estate was split between 1826 and 1840. Château Léoville Las Cases was created, by a kind of birthright, from 3/5 of the original estate and the heart of the domain. The current terroir of the Grand Vin has therefore formed the historical heart of the original terroir since the 17th century. Pierre Jean, Adolphe and Gabriel de Las Cases were heirs to the estate until 1900, when Théophile Skawinski bought a share in the estate and became its manager. Léoville Las Cases has been managed by the same family since the end of the 19th century and is today represented by Jean-Hubert Delon, sole owner of the château and owner of Château Potensac in the Medoc and Château Nénin in Pomerol.
The vineyards of Château Léoville Las Cases are located in the northern part of Saint-Julien, adjacent to Château Latour. The proximity of the Gironde River and the well-drained gravelly soils contribute to the estate's excellent terroir. The vineyard is planted with classic Bordeaux grape varieties, with a significant emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives on the gravelly soils and gives structure and aging potential to the wines. Château Léoville Las Cases is known for producing powerful, age-worthy red wines that are considered to be among the best in Bordeaux. The winemaking approach embraces traditional methods, with an emphasis on expressing the unique characteristics of the estate's terroir. The grapes are carefully harvested and sorted prior to fermentation, and the wines are typically aged in oak barrels.
The 2022 Léoville Las-Cases was harvested from 8 to 30 September, with more emphasis on infusion than extraction, and aged in 84% new oak. On the nose, this Saint-Julien is early ripe, almost decadent, with lush blackberry and blueberry fruit – there’s something exuberant and audacious about it. Underlying it is an estuarine element, a hint of the banks of the Gironde. The palate is medium-bodied with polished tannins, very refined and extremely pure with great precision on the finish. The 2022 Léoville Las Cases received the maximum score of 100/100 points.

The 2022 Léoville Las Cases is just as remarkable in bottle as it was from barrel. Wafting from the glass with aromas of beautifully pure cassis fruit mingled with notions of violets, burning embers and subtle cigar box, it has already almost entirely integrated its new oak. Full-bodied, dense and layered, it's deep and resonant, with striking concentration, precision and harmony, concluding with a long, palate-staining finish. This striking Saint-Julien really is one of the wines of the vintage, and the best young Léoville Las Cases I've ever tasted.

Sophistication and pure beauty on the nose, showing intense lead pencil, blackcurrants, ink and blackberries as well as crushed stones. Spellbinding. Medium-bodied, it grows endlessly on the palate, superb tannins caressing like the finest silk. It just keeps on coming. The character is immaculate. Ethereal. Power with elegance. 83.5% cabernet sauvignon, 10.5% cabernet franc and 6% merlot. It gives the impression you can drink it now, but it needs five to six years of bottle age. A neoclassical masterpiece. Try after 2031, but if you want to taste it now, I understand.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Léoville Las-Cases was picked 8-30 September with more infusion than extraction, matured in 84% new oak. Precocious, almost decadent blackberry and blueberry fruit on the nose, there is something lavish and audacious about this Saint-Julien. There is an underlying estuarine element, a whiff off the banks of the Gironde. The palate is medium-bodied with polished tannins, very detailed, extremely pure, what you might call a "vertical" Las-Cases with fabulous precision on the finish. This surpasses the 2018-2020 trio and to use that clichéd expression, is a "tour de force".

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Léoville Las Cases is stunning. Fine-grained and nuanced, the 2022 Las Cases is breathtaking. Red/purplish fruit, rose petals, lavender, spice and mocha open gradually but what impresses most about the 2022 is its sublime finesse. Silky, plush and exceptionally beautiful, the 2022 Las Cases is shaping up to be one of the wines of the year.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2023
“Over the last 20 years we have gotten better at dealing with excessively hot and dry vintages, but the vines have also adapted. I remember that in 2003, the vines only shut down in August,” Jean-Hubert Delon explained. The 2022s here are stellar, but Las Cases is otherworldly. Yields were a paltry 22 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to the 36-37 that are more typical.
