Château l'Eglise-Clinet Winery

Château l'Eglise-Clinet is among the very best in Pomerol and is closely linked to the Durantou family. Under the leadership of Denis Durantou, the estate became a benchmark within the appellation, producing wines that combine power, precision, and finesse. The vineyards are situated on exceptional clay and gravel terroir, bordering some of Pomerol's greatest names. The style is concentrated, deep, yet refined, with excellent aging potential. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region and year 2022

The 2022 vintage in Pomerol is considered one of the most impressive in recent years. The warm and dry growing season ensured optimal ripeness and concentration, while the best terroirs retained their freshness and balance. In Pomerol, this resulted in wines with depth, richness, and remarkably pure fruit expression.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The 2022 Château l'Eglise-Clinet is blended from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, harvested between September 3rd and 9th. The vineyards are situated on a combination of deep clay and gravel, which contributes to both power and refinement. The Merlot gives the wine its full, opulent core, while Cabernet Franc provides tension, aromatic lift, and structure.

Vinification and maturation

Vinification focuses on precision and extraction without excess, allowing the terroir's character to fully express itself. Maturation takes place in French oak barriques, subtly integrating the wood. Despite an alcohol content of 14.6%, the wine remains harmonious and balanced.

Color, smell and taste

Deep purple-red in color. The nose offers intense aromas of mulberry and blackcurrant, with notes of incense, licorice, rose petals, and spices.

The palate is full and layered, with an elegantly muscular core of ripe yet vibrant fruit. The tannins are fine and powdery, perfectly integrated into the structure. The wine is concentrated and multidimensional, with a long, resonant finish that combines power and refinement.

Drinking window and development

With a score of 96-98 points, the 2022 Château l'Eglise-Clinet ranks among the absolute top vintages in Pomerol. This is a wine with great aging potential, which will continue to develop and refine over many years.

Summary of professional reviews

The 2022 vintage is praised for its deep aromatic complexity, layered structure, and perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. The combination of sweet fruit, fine tannins, and a long, resonant finish makes this one of the most compelling Pomerols of the year.

History

Château L'Eglise Clinet has a long history dating back to the 19th century. The current estate was created in 1955 when it was formed by the merger of the vineyards of Clos L'Eglise and Château Clinet. Since then, it has developed into one of the top producers in Pomerol.

Vineyard and Terroir

The vineyard area of Château L'Eglise Clinet covers about 4.5 hectares and is located on the famous Pomerol plateau. The vineyards are planted with mainly Merlot (about 85%) and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Franc (about 15%). The soil consists of a mixture of clay and gravel, which is ideal for growing these grape varieties and adds to the complexity and depth of the wines.

Winemaking

Denis Durantou, who managed the estate until his passing in 2020, was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his pursuit of perfection. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete barrels, and the wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which is renewed annually.

Wines

The wines of Château L'Eglise Clinet are known for their rich and complex aromas, which often include notes of blackcurrant, plum, chocolate, truffle, and spices. They have a powerful yet elegant structure with fine tannins and excellent aging potential. These wines can often age for decades and improve with time.

Property

After Denis Durantou's death, the estate is managed by his daughters, who continue his legacy and maintain the high quality standards he set.
