Description
The history of Tenuta Tignanello and the role of Marchesi Antinori
Tignanello is one of Italy's most influential wines and is produced by the historic Marchesi Antinori winery, which has been active in Tuscan viticulture since 1385. Today, the family business is led by the 26th generation of Antinori, who combine tradition with innovation.
Tignanello wine comes from a dedicated vineyard on the Antinori estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, between the villages of Greve and Panzano. This vineyard, approximately 77 hectares in size, lies at an altitude of 350 to 400 meters and is rich in limestone with a southwesterly exposure. It was one of the first Italian red wines to employ modern techniques, such as aging in small oak barrels and the use of international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc alongside Sangiovese. Since 1971, Tignanello has been released as an independent wine, outside the Chianti classification, and has since achieved Super Tuscan status.
Climate and terroir in the 2022 harvest year
The 2022 vintage was characterized by warm, dry conditions in spring and summer, with temperatures above the seasonal average in June and July. Despite these challenges, the vines showed remarkable resilience. Rainfall in August brought cooling and restored the day-night differential, leading to ideal grape ripening.
The harvest began in mid-September with Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc and concluded in early October with the Cabernet Sauvignon picking. The combination of climatic extremes and a favorable autumn yielded grapes of exceptional quality.
Vinification and maturation of Tignanello 2022
The grapes were carefully selected and vinified in conical tanks, with great attention paid to aroma extraction, color, and the acquisition of elegant tannins. Each batch was fermented separately and, after fermentation, underwent malolactic fermentation in small oak barrels to enhance complexity and balance.
The wine matured for over 13 months in primarily new French oak barriques, with a small amount of Hungarian oak. After an initial maturation phase, the different batches were blended and then matured together in barrel. Finally, the wine rested in the bottle for another 12 months before release.
The grape mix used consists primarily of Sangiovese, supplemented with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This gives the wine both the vibrancy of Tuscany and the structure of an international style.
Color, smell and taste of Tignanello 2022
The 2022 Tignanello presents itself with a deep ruby red color and purple highlights. On the nose, the wine opens with layered aromas of cherry, black cherry, and pomegranate, refined with floral notes of violet. Below, fresh balsamic aromas and subtle woody notes of vanilla and cotton candy unfold.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet refined, with juicy, salty tannins and a fresh core that offers structure and elegance. The texture is compact and dynamic, with a long finish in which the fruity and floral notes return. Tignanello 2022 is already approachable, but will continue to refine in the bottle over the coming years.

First made in 1971, this legendary Italian wine now celebrates its 50th birthday. Happy Birthday, Tignanello! The Marchesi Antinori 2021 Tignanello (made with 79% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc) pulls on all the heartstrings. To be released in May, the wine shows a quintessentially pretty taste profile with tart fruit flavors, redcurrant, tea leaf, heritage rose, crushed white pepper, licorice, nutmeg, clove and chopped mint. It opens slowly to reveal more richness and exuberance with time, becoming downright voluptuous and heady a short while later. The through line, however, remains the bright freshness and minerality of Sangiovese. Compared to the 2018 vintage (which I also loved), this vintage has more overall fruit weight and volume.
Marchesi Antinori General Manager Renzo Cotarella tells me that 2021 is the best vintage he has ever overseen. Ever. He prefers it to recent classics like 2016 and 2010. There was frost in the spring, and the growing cycle was very long. This is something that most grapes, and especially Sangiovese, need in order to exhibit aromatic depth and flavor complexity. "This is an exceptional year," he says, citing the inner energy certainly exhibited by the wines from 2021.
I agree, mostly, but not unequivocally. I love the precision and tension inherent to these wines, but I didn't encounter that same breathless vertical lift and linearity that I remember so well in 2016, for example. That was a vintage that managed to effortlessly balance both power and elegance, which is by no means an easy feat. To me, 2021 has the elegance but not the same piercing power that you only get in cooler vintages when sugar and phenolic ripening line up seamlessly. So, while I love these wines, especially the Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori and the outstanding Tignanello, my money is still on 2016 as the better vintage, speaking generally. But zoom in on one wine and my money is on the 2021 Tignanello over everything else.

There’s extraordinary energy in this wine. It displays a dark nose of black cherries, bramble fruit, violets, forest, licorice, bark, carob and leather. From: 2025 Tuscany Preview (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Tignanello is such an elegant, poised wine. Brisk acids cut through a core of red Sangiovese fruit. Crushed flowers, mint, cinnamon, rose petal and a kiss of French oak appear later, adding notable brightness. The 2022 is a decidedly mid-weight Tignanello, but all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. Tignanello saw rain episodes at the end of the season, like most properties, but steep, well-draining hillsides were a clear advantage. The blend is 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, essentially the classic proportions here.
