Description
The name of the village "Chambolle" probably derives from the Celtic "cambola" (meaning fertile land near a stream, good quality soil), already known for its vineyards in Gallo-Roman times and cultivated by the monks in the Middle Ages.
"Amoureuses" means "lovers" in French. Some say that you fall in love drinking this wine, others claim that the expression "a wine that has love" is used in Burgundy to describe a wine with a beautiful bouquet... Whatever the true meaning, this Premier Cru has always been very highly appreciated, almost on the same level as Musigny, its famous Grand Cru neighbor.
The Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is one of the most subtle wines in all of Burgundy! The colour can vary from cherry to ruby. A wide range of seductive aromas that can evolve from raspberry to kirsch from one moment to the next. Later, the nose can show some truffle, mushroom or woody notes and in some years musky, even animal nuances. The aromas are always restrained and elegant. In the mouth, a deliciously silky feeling, with very refined tannins. Intensity, velvety texture and lively freshness: this well-named wine is a masterpiece of harmony. The finish is very delicate and leaves an impression of supreme refinement.
This is a 1.5 liter magnum. Even tastier and has an even longer drinking window .

The brilliant 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses wafts from the glass with thrilling aromas of raspberries, bergamot, warm spices, rose petals and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, lively and seamless, it's elegant and fine-boned, with a long, intensely perfumed finish. It's the most ethereal wine in the range this year.

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru blossoms in the glass: black cherries, blueberry, hints of date and pressed flowers and quite exuberant. It gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firmer tannins than the aromatics imply, solid and quite structured with decent depth on the finish. Whereas the bouquet is open, the palate politely invites you to be patient. Good potential.

My final visit during my six-week trip to the Côte d’Or is on Friday morning chez Drouhin in the heart of Beaune. As Véronique Drouhin is in Paris, I taste with her brother, Frédéric.
“The wines are evolving slowly, so we are not doing an early bottling,” Drouhin explains. “For me, the style is seductive and unique. Seductive because the style of the wine is pleasant, charming and precise, terroir-driven. It’s unique because of Nature that year. The frost took us all by surprise, especially in the Côte d’Or. On 6 April, the temperature fell from 3° Celsius to -6° Celsius in three-four hours. We did our best to protect the buds. We put candles in Montrachet, but we could not protect all the vineyards. In some cases, like in Puligny-Folatières we lost the entire production; others like in Beaune Clos des Mouches the yields were very low. It was the same for the reds though they did not suffer as much from the frost. We had constant disease pressure with first and second-generation grapes, so we had to pick often two times in the same vineyard (from 17 September), which was another difficulty. Some sorting was necessary. The vinification was quite slow, and we did not look for too much extraction. With a lot of malic, we tried to guide the wines and work more on the balance and aromatics, working on the lees during aging. We had to conduct a different vinification as we had to downsize the fermenters into barrels instead of vats. The samples represent barrels racked and ready for bottling in a few months.”

Joseph Drouhin was a bold and enterprising young man who hailed from the Chablis region. In 1880, at the age of 22, he settled in Beaune and founded his own wine company there. His goal was to offer high quality wines that would bear his name. His son Maurice succeeded him and set up a vineyard estate in front of the house, buying land in some excellent appellations such as Clos des Mouches and Clos de Vougeot. Robert Drouhin, who succeeded Maurice in 1957, gave the domain its current dimension and acquired many vineyards, especially in Chablis, where he was able to recognize its true potential. He was one of the first in Burgundy to introduce "culture raisonnée" (abolition of pesticides and other chemicals) and set up an oenology laboratory led by Laurence Jobard, the very first female oenologist in Burgundy. Philippe, Véronique, Laurent and Frédéric are the four children of Robert and Françoise Drouhin. They uphold the values of the house and its constant search for quality, for the enjoyment of all who have a deep appreciation for the natural elegance of Burgundy.
With nearly 90 different appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating range of Burgundian terroirs in all their authenticity and subtle variations. Joseph Drouhin has adopted the organic and biodynamic approach. Only natural products are used in the vineyards and all procedures show the utmost respect for the soil, the vine and the environment. Joseph Drouhin's style is an alliance between character, balance and harmony. Wines intended to be drunk young are fresh and subtle; wines that are meant to be preserved take on a luscious complexity with age.
