Description
The vineyard is located at the southern end of the Beaune appellation, next to Pommard. The Drouhin vineyard is located on a slope, on a gentle slope with an east/southeast exposure. It is the largest parcel of the Clos des Mouches (14 hectares - 35 acres), half of which is planted with Chardonnay, the other with Pinot Noir. The name "mouches" means flies. There were once beehives in this sun-drenched "clos" (vineyard enclosure); the bees were called "mouches à miel" (honey flies) in the local dialect, hence the name Clos des Mouches. It is one of the first vineyards that Maurice Drouhin (the founder's son) acquired in the 1920s. With great determination, he bought 41 different parcels from 8 owners. An equal number of red and white grapes are planted and both wines have achieved mythical status for the House of Joseph Drouhin.
The Beaune Clos des Mouches is an exceptional wine. Beautiful deep ruby colour, with the bright shine of great Burgundies. Intense and fresh nose for the young wines. Primary notes of red fruits dominate, such as Morello cherry ("griotte", or wild cherry), raspberry, blackberry. There are hints of complexity with smoky flavours evolving towards liquorice. As the wine matures, aromas of pepper, tobacco, humus and undergrowth appear. When drinking the wine, the first impression is always clear and the texture fleshy. The body is firm without being rough, well mixed without being heavy. There is a great freshness in the younger wines. With age, the wine becomes rounder. It acquires "grass" (velvety texture) and a more precise architecture, supported by silky tannins. It is lively and refined at the same time. There remains a final and very pleasant sensation of harmony, fullness and delicate tannins, as the wine lingers on the palate.
This magnum in beautiful 2021 in wooden box is in celebration of its 100th anniversary. Even tastier and has an even longer drinking window .

The 2021 Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge 1er Cru is one of my picks from Drouhin this year. Wonderful, vivacious red fruit leap from the glass, hints of sous-bois and dried rose petal. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine mineralité, demonstrating more complexity than the preceding Beaune Cras with more grip on the finish. Superb.

My final visit during my six-week trip to the Côte d’Or is on Friday morning chez Drouhin in the heart of Beaune. As Véronique Drouhin is in Paris, I taste with her brother, Frédéric.
“The wines are evolving slowly, so we are not doing an early bottling,” Drouhin explains. “For me, the style is seductive and unique. Seductive because the style of the wine is pleasant, charming and precise, terroir-driven. It’s unique because of Nature that year. The frost took us all by surprise, especially in the Côte d’Or. On 6 April, the temperature fell from 3° Celsius to -6° Celsius in three-four hours. We did our best to protect the buds. We put candles in Montrachet, but we could not protect all the vineyards. In some cases, like in Puligny-Folatières we lost the entire production; others like in Beaune Clos des Mouches the yields were very low. It was the same for the reds though they did not suffer as much from the frost. We had constant disease pressure with first and second-generation grapes, so we had to pick often two times in the same vineyard (from 17 September), which was another difficulty. Some sorting was necessary. The vinification was quite slow, and we did not look for too much extraction. With a lot of malic, we tried to guide the wines and work more on the balance and aromatics, working on the lees during aging. We had to conduct a different vinification as we had to downsize the fermenters into barrels instead of vats. The samples represent barrels racked and ready for bottling in a few months.”

Joseph Drouhin was a bold and enterprising young man who hailed from the Chablis region. In 1880, at the age of 22, he settled in Beaune and founded his own wine company there. His goal was to offer high quality wines that would bear his name. His son Maurice succeeded him and set up a vineyard estate in front of the house, buying land in some excellent appellations such as Clos des Mouches and Clos de Vougeot. Robert Drouhin, who succeeded Maurice in 1957, gave the domain its current dimension and acquired many vineyards, especially in Chablis, where he was able to recognize its true potential. He was one of the first in Burgundy to introduce "culture raisonnée" (abolition of pesticides and other chemicals) and set up an oenology laboratory led by Laurence Jobard, the very first female oenologist in Burgundy. Philippe, Véronique, Laurent and Frédéric are the four children of Robert and Françoise Drouhin. They uphold the values of the house and its constant search for quality, for the enjoyment of all who have a deep appreciation for the natural elegance of Burgundy.
With nearly 90 different appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating range of Burgundian terroirs in all their authenticity and subtle variations. Joseph Drouhin has adopted the organic and biodynamic approach. Only natural products are used in the vineyards and all procedures show the utmost respect for the soil, the vine and the environment. Joseph Drouhin's style is an alliance between character, balance and harmony. Wines intended to be drunk young are fresh and subtle; wines that are meant to be preserved take on a luscious complexity with age.
