Description
CVNE's Asua is only made in top years (2004, 2005, 2010, 2011 and now 2015). Since 1994, CVNE has been paying tribute to its founders with this magnificent red, made from a selection of the best Tempranillo varieties grown on a 1.5-hectare plot in Rioja Alta and vinified in a microbodega installed at CVNE's headquarters. It is a classic "revisited" La Rioja, where the proverbial elegance of the wines of this area is underlined by a clear fruit expression.
The wine comes from the best vineyards of Villalaba and Haro where the ripening of the skin and fleshiness of the grape is constantly monitored and by regular tasting the exact date of the harvest is determined. The first selection is collected in small boxes and is then fermented in oak barrels and where they remain for 5 weeks after fermentation under strict control of the temperature. This is the Icon of CVNE - their Top Wine. This wine is intensely ripe with red fruit, spices and mocha / coffee notes and a touch of balsamics from the oak. Very good and balanced in taste with ripe, fine tannins over a rich, fleshy structure. Extremely well balanced with a great aftertaste and good acidity. The 2015 vintage is wonderful with an unprecedented drinking window 2040+
• The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) was founded in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers.

I also tasted the 2021 Real de Asúa, which was already in bottle. 2021 was cooler, and the wine has a little less alcohol than the 2020 I tasted next to it. It comes from the same vines and the process was similar, but in this case, they didn't use any new barrels in the aging, which took place in 100% second-use barriques. This was very recently bottled and felt a little dizzy, with a slightly blurry nose, somehow creamy and with a more oxidative touch and a more solid palate, a little more exuberant and with abundant tannins that need time to get polished and/or powerful food. I might be getting it wrong, because the harvest was better than 2020. But today, the wine is still a bit of a question mark. Time will tell... 14,493 bottled produced. It was bottled in January 2024.
CVNE is a large producer (four to 4.5 million bottles) that doesn't stop. They are focusing on white wines, with the idea to produce Reserva and Gran Reserva whites in the near future, expanding the Asua range and planting more vineyards. They purchased the Davalillo Castle some time ago and are restoring it, planting vines on the slopes around it and purchasing old vines in the vicinity with the idea to produce a wine from the castle (in the castle?) and open it to the public, perhaps in 2025.
At the Viña Real winery in Rioja Alavesa, they are also purchasing more vineyards and looking for cooler places. They are producing vineyard wines. Bakeder and the old Pagos de Viña Real are now called La Virgen, as it comes from a vineyard of that name in the village of Labastida. They are purchasing smaller vats to separately ferment the grapes from their best vineyards. The range is one to 1.3 million bottles. They keep pushing for more quality and freshness in the wines.

Such an exuberant, floral nose with lots of berries, plums, dark cherries, ink and touches of dark minerals, mussels and spices. Quite pristine and naked, with a medium to full body and a mouthful of powerful, sensuous tannins. Great tension. A super-confident, single-vineyard wine without much adornment. Drink or hold.

From: The Many Riojas of Rioja: A Tale of Forking Paths (Apr 2024)
The 2020 Real de Asua is 100% Tempranillo sourced from the Carromaza plot in Villalba, Rioja Alta. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, this purple wine exhibits reductive aromas typical of Tempranillo, with a distinct blood-like quality. It also offers notes of violets, raspberries and strawberries layered over an unusual meaty undertone. Dry and juicy on the palate, its unweighted structure and intense flavors contribute to a vibrant, age-worthy red wine with a nod to Bordeaux. What sets it apart is the contrast between its concentration and finesse, along with the interplay of reductive notes and nuanced flavors.

Founded in 1879 in the Barrio de la Estación area in Haro, Rioja Alta, today CVNE is run by the fifth generation of the same family, with Victor Urrutia Ybarra as director. The entrepreneurial family invested heavily in wine recently, expanding their influence inside Rioja and beyond—CVNE is now an icon in Spain. In Rioja, they use grapes from Rioja Alta and Alavesa, making reds with a classical profile and a nod to modernity. Their Gran Reserva stands out, with the modern influence coming through in the freshness of its fruit and creamy-textured palate.
