Description
Château Haut-Brion and the history of white Bordeaux
Château Haut-Brion is among Bordeaux's oldest estates and one of the few Premier Grand Cru Classé vineyards that produces both red and white wines at exceptional levels. White wines represent only a small portion of the total production and therefore enjoy an almost mythical status. The style is powerful yet refined, with a unique balance between ripeness, tension, and aromatic precision. In cooler years, this tension is even more pronounced, and 2021 is a prime example.
The special terroir of Pessac-Léognan
The Haut-Brion vineyards are situated on warm gravel, with clay and limestone beneath. This combination provides excellent drainage and natural heat retention, which supports the ripening of both Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The microclimate in Pessac-Léognan is more stable than in many other parts of Bordeaux, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Haut-Brion's white varieties are known for their structure, tension, and longevity, supported by a clean acidity and intense aromatic profile.
A cool and classic vintage with exceptional quality
The 2021 harvest brought back the classic Bordeaux style. The growing season was cool, with the perfect conditions to harvest perfectly ripe fruit without overripeness or loss of freshness. According to the château, this was one of the few years in which harvesting was possible exactly when desired, without the constraints of weather. The white grapes were harvested from September 3rd to 13th, after which the individual plots were vinified with great precision. The blend, as usual, consists of 55 percent Sémillon and 45 percent Sauvignon Blanc, a ratio that creates tension, aromatic depth, and a powerful structure.
The 2021 Château Haut-Brion Blanc
Reviews unanimously emphasize the impressive structure, energy, and aromatic expression of the 2021 Blanc. The wine combines intensity with an almost red-wine-like verticality. The nose reveals white peach, yellow plum, kumquat, citrus, dried flowers, and subtle almond. The aromatic layers slowly unfold in the glass and continually develop. According to several tasters, this is one of the most precise, elegant, and structured editions of recent years, with unprecedented purity and focus.
Vinification, structure and development potential
As is customary with Haut-Brion, each plot is vinified and aged separately. The combination of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc gives the wine its depth, texture, and tension. The 2021 Blanc displays a powerful acidity, yet remains creamy and broad in the mid-palate. The wine is taut, energetic, and exceptionally long, with a citrus-driven core that carries through to the finish. Its potential is impressive. This vintage will continue to develop and refine for decades to come.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2021 Blanc
The color is light straw yellow with a subtle sheen. The aroma combines white peach, lemon confit, mint, dried flowers, almond, and refreshing spice. The palate is intense, vertical, and precise, with a combination of creamy roundness and a powerful acidity that gives the wine length and tension. The finish is clean, long, and complex, with notes of citrus oil, white flowers, and a refined mineral note. This wine will become one of the most beloved Haut-Brion Blancs of the modern decade.

The 2021 Blanc is a standout example of what this iconic estate is capable of producing, revealing a complex bouquet of pear, white peach, nectarine and spices. Full-bodied, round and fleshy with an enveloping core of fruit, it’s seamless and satiny, girdled by bright acids and framed by chalky, structuring dry extract.

This is racy and aromatic, with blossom honey, lemons, limes and crushed stone. Some Thai basil, too. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fresh acidity and plenty of energy. Solid and polished in the Haut-Brion way. Better to leave this for three or four years.

From: 2021 Bordeaux En Primeur: Back to Classicism (May 2022)
A wine of tremendous stature and breed, the 2021 Haut-Brion Blanc possesses tremendous vertical energy allied to a feeling of structure that could easily be confused with that of a red wine. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers and mint develop as the 2021 shows off its creaminess and breadth. The 2021 is an absolutely stunning wine by any measure.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2022
There’s a ton to like in the 2021s from Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion. The reds show off the gracious side of the vintage to great effect, with lifted aromatics, silky textures and primary fruit at this early stage. It’s a terrific vintage for the whites as well, all of which are the same 55% Sémillon/45% Sauvignon Blanc blend. “Back in the 1990s, harvest dates were chosen for us by deteriorating conditions at the end of harvest. Rain and the risk of rot essentially dictated when fruit had to come in,” Managing Director Jean-Philippe Delmas told me. “In the 2000s, with climate change, we were forced to the other extreme, that is to say picking earlier and earlier to avoid losing acidity and bringing in overripe grapes. Two thousand twenty-one was a very rare vintage in which we could harvest when we wanted to, with no pressure whatsoever.”

From: Enticingly Fallible: Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur (May 2022)
The 2021 Haut-Brion Blanc has a wonderful bouquet of white peach, yellow plum, kumquat and white flower scents that opens beautifully in the glass, displaying lovely definition. The palate is very well balanced with a killer line of acidity that perfectly counterbalances the intense citrus fruit. Razor-sharp, more than any vintage that I have tasted in recent years. I often think that this is overrated at primeur, but the 2021 is undeniably a showstopping Haut-Brion Blanc.
- By Neal Martin on April 2022
What I find fascinating is the diversification on approaches between Jean-Philippe Delmas at Domaine Clarence Dillon’s two estates, and that of Les Carmes Haut-Brion. It’s worth reading and juxtaposing both to see how their tenets are at times almost diametrically opposed. “We had little frost, so yields are normal for both La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion at 47 to 48hL/ha. We are not organic, and so in this kind of vintage with a lot of rain, almost every day in June, using conventional treatments means you did not lose a large part of the crop. The key is to spray at the right moment before the arrival of mildew. We did some green harvesting for the Merlot and bled the Merlot vats by 10%. For the 50% of Cabernet Sauvignon, we chaptalised by around 0.5%. The season did not favour one particular variety, but we did have beautiful vats of Cabernet Franc, 12% of the blend in the Haut-Brion. We started picking the white on 3 September and finished 13 September, the reds picked from 13 September until 8 October, almost a month to obtain the optimal ripeness for each parcel. Each plot is different, so you have to manage each one of them like its own estate. You had to be patient. For the whites, for the first time in many years, we started exactly when we wanted without any pressures.”

Château Haut-Brion is located in the French municipality of Pessac, a few kilometers southwest of the city of Bordeaux. Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically the most colorful Gironde winery - it was here that the first Bordeaux was made from a single vineyard in the 17th century, first donated in London coffee houses and praised by many leading writers. In 1935, the winery was bought by Clarence Dillon, an American banker. He invested large sums in the renovation of the chai and the vineyard. In 1960, Haut-Brion became the first premier cru, replacing the wooden barrels with stainless steel tanks. In 1983, the Dillon family bought the adjacent Château la Mission Haut-Brion.
The vineyard covers an area of 51 hectares of which just over 48 hectares are planted with red grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) and just under 3 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties (Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc).
