Description
The Le Mortelle estate is located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, just a few kilometres from the town of Castiglione della Pescaia, and occupies an extremely fascinating position, both in terms of the nature that surrounds it and the history of the land. The Antinori family has always been present in the area - a deed of ownership from 1863 lists Poggio Franco, one of the estate's most beautiful vineyards, among their properties, along with other plots of land. The Antinori have been working on the vineyards and the cellar since 1999, firmly convinced that this area is going to become an emerging area of Italian wine, as it has great potential for the production of fine wine. The estate extends over a total of around 675 acres, of which over 425 are planted with vines, first Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, then more recently with the additions of white grapes such as Viognier, Ansonica and Vermentino, along with a small amount of Carmenère. The soil, of medium texture, consists mainly of clay and silica and is quite rocky in parts.
Antinori's Poggio alle Nane is a blend of the finest Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small percentage of Carménère grapes that reflect the unique terroir of one of the estate's very best vineyards. Poggio alle Nane is a wine of great aromatic complexity with an elegant tannic structure.
The grapes, carefully selected and hand-picked in small crates, were then further selected on sorting tables and after this second selection destemmed and very lightly crushed. The must sank by gravity into conical stainless steel tanks where it then fermented. The period of skin contact lasted 20 days at a temperature maintained at 28° Celsius. The malolactic fermentation, which took place in small oak barrels, was followed by a maturation period of approximately 16 months in French oak barrels.
The Poggio alle Nane has a beautiful bright ruby red color. The nose is characterized by a complex and elegant bouquet. In the first attack vanilla and sweet pepper and wonderfully integrated into the notes of berries, especially blackberries and hints of Mediterranean herbs and lavender. In the mouth the wine is both structured and silky. The finish, balanced and persistent, offers notes of chocolate, blueberries and liquorice. In our opinion, the Poggio alle Nane should not be missing in the collection of beautiful Italian wines and we are already seeing that the price is rising every year as we have also seen with Antinori's Tignanello.

The aromas of blackcurrants, cherries, fresh herbs, hazelnuts and chocolate are irresistible. It’s medium- to full-bodied with creamy and refined tannins that run the length of the wine. Cabernet franc with small doses of carmenere and cabernet sauvignon. Drinkable now, but much better in two or three years.

From: Tuscany New Releases, Part 1 (Mar 2020)
The 2016 Poggio alle Nane is powerful, dense and ample. Black cherry, plum, licorice, menthol, new leather, spice, incense and lavender all build as this dark, unctuous wine shows off its considerable allure. The 2016 is concentrated and rich, with impeccable balance and tons of sheer appeal, not to mention a gorgeous wine in its price range.
- By Antonio Galloni on July 2019
Antinori's Le Mortelle is one of the most intriguing properties on the Tuscan coast for many reasons. One of these is an emphasis on Cabernet Franc and, especially, Carménère, a variety the Antinoris chose to plant based on their experience in Chile.

More information about Antinori
Marquis Piero Antinori is in charge and is assisted by his three daughters: Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. Funny those three A's. We are not going to bother you with all the awards that have been received over the years, because then this price list can no longer go through the letterbox. There are two red wines that are available on allocation and that one would like to get a few bottles from all over the world and that are Tignanello and Solaia and we also have these in our range at Grandcruwijnen.
In 1180, Ugo and Antinori di Rinuccino were officially named as owners of Castello di Combiate; a century later, the family who had moved to Florence were included in the register of the silk trade cooperative. In 1385, Giovanni di Piero, an indirect descendant, entered the wine guild as an apprentice. Since then, the wine-growing tradition of the Antinori family has been continuous. With the establishment of the Marchesi Antinori winery, the peak was reached in 1895 and already in 1898 the winery was built in San Casciano Val di Pesa, which is still the center of the widely branched group of properties in all major cultivation areas of Tuscany, Umbria. , Piemonte (since the early 90s through the purchase of the wine cellar Prunotto), Apulia and even California. The traditional house participating in the modern Tuscan wine-growing revolution owes much of its prestige to its former chief vinologist Giacomo Tachis, who produced exceptional wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello (especially sangiovese), Solaia (especially cabernet) and many others. the other was responsible. Vinologist Renzo Cotarella also created one of the best chardonnays in Italy in the Umbrian Castello della Sala.
