Description
The Niellon family has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 19th century when the family was founded by Michel Niellon’s grandfather, Léon Niellon. In the 1960s, Michel Niellon took over the family business from his father, Marcel Niellon, and has continued the tradition of producing exceptional Burgundy wines. The estate has six hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The vineyards are located at varying altitudes between 200 and 400 metres, which contributes to the unique character of their wines.
Domaine Michel Niellon is characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Both the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay are hand-picked and rigorously selected for quality. The fermentation process is initiated using the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. The wines mature in French oak barrels, with a portion of new wood (usually 15% to 30%). Malolactic conversion and Sur Lie also take place in these wooden barrels. Domaine Michel Niellon is known for producing high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. Their icon, the Bâtard-Montrachet, is highly regarded. In addition, this producer's Chassagne-Montrachet's are known worldwide for their exceptional quality.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière mingles aromas of orange rind and pear with hints of fresh bread, buttered pastry, toasted nuts and dried white flowers in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, bright and ample, with fine depth at the core, lively acids and a chalky finish, it's a fine success.
While Michel Coutoux and his daughter Marlène bemoan the impact of climatic extremes on their vineyards—much of the replantings of the 1980s and 1990s, which ought to be entering their prime, will have to be replaced in the near future due to the degeneration of the 161-49 rootstock—the wines of Domaine Michel Niellon themselves remain remarkably unmarked by recent dry, warm vintages. The 2020s are no exception: lively, beautifully balanced and even comparatively tightly wound after their bottling before harvest 2021, they continue a strong recent run at this estate. As ever, bottling is under natural cork.
