Description
Domaine Gérard Fiou is a French family business in the eastern Loire region, founded by the ancestors of Gérard Fiou and taken over by the friendly Bourgeois family after his retirement. This family is the leading maker of Sancerre and Pouilly wines: their expertise is of great benefit to the Domaine Gerard Fiou winery! Wine has been made in this area since the 15th century, and monks have helped further develop viticulture. The terroir of the vineyard of Domaine Gérard Fiou was for a long time considered too difficult for wine growing, but all wine growers in the area now agree that this is the most interesting terroir of Sancerre AOP. The 24 hectare domain has belonged to the Fiou family for several generations. The vineyards are planted on the particularly rich 'silex' soil in the area around Saint-Satur. This exceptional terroir provides optimal ripening of the grapes by storing the sun's heat and releasing this heat evenly at night. Under the leadership of Gerard Fiou, the domain is completely organic and officially certified since 2010.
The vineyards of Domaine Gérard Fiou are located in Saint Satur, the town that borders Sancerre - with Pouilly Fumé the most famous appellation for formidable Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire region. The soil on the Sancerre side of the hill consists of Kimmeridge lime. On the Saint Satur side it is mainly silex or flint. This gives the wines more minerality, a slightly higher acidity and therefore more ripening potential. The 'Grand Roc' is the flagship of Domaine Gérard Fiou. From the vineyard with the oldest vines on a terroir with flint, near Saint Satur.
The Gerard Fiou Sancerre Grand Roc Terroir de Silex is shiny golden yellow in color. Complex, refined scent of gooseberry, green apple, citrus and white flowers. Pronounced character with a nice tension between fine fruit acids, light vanilla notes and stone fruit. The aftertaste is intense and long-lasting. Le grand roc is the top cuvée of the domain

About Sancerre
Sancerre is the home of Sauvignon Blanc as Burgundy is the home of Pinot Noir: it seems the whole world is trying to find Sauvignon Blanc to match the excellence of Sancerre's output. Each wine region has its idiosyncrasies, and it's fun to taste the expression of terroir (and winemakers' style) in wines from the same grape variety grown in different areas, sometimes on different continents. Yet Sancerre is the champion in his field. The Loire divides the region in two. On the left bank we find Sancerre itself, where the hills are rich in limestone and clay, with soils so chalky that they are called "white soils" (terres blanche), because they become very light when dry. On the right bank is the Pouilly-Fumé Subregion, whose northeastern soils are richer in clay-flint. This soil type also occurs on the other bank of the river, so it is difficult to make a clear geological separation between Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Gravel soil of erosive origin is scattered here and there throughout the Sancerre region, so optimal drainage is also guaranteed, slopes do the rest.

Issue 261 End of June 2022, The Wine Advocate
Partially vinified in barriques, the 2018 Sancerre blanc "Le Grand Roc" Terroir de Silex opens with a clear and discreet yet actually intense and substantial nose of ripe, white fruits, blackcurrant, lush peaches, white blossoms, brioche and iodine. Full-bodied, fresh and with mineral vitality on the palate, this is an intense, mouth-filling and sustainable Sancerre that indicates well-dosed oak management and an excellent silex terroir. The wine is powerful and complex and reveals a seriously firm structure with stimulating phenolics. The 2018 still appears as a young and vivacious, stimulating Sancerre, and it's less massive or rich than so many of its peers. This is an excellent wine indeed. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in April 2022.

Cherries, raspberries, smoke and baking spices dominate on the nose following through to a medium body with creamy tannins. Round and velvety with a caressing texture and plenty of juicy cherries and crunchy berries on the mid-palate. Succulent finish. Drink or hold.

Gérard Fiou Sancerre Terroir de Silex Le Grand Roc 2019

Tightly wound and subdued at first, this broods with zesty grapefruit and peach flavors that turn silky on the dense palate, with notes of sweet bay leaf and white pepper. Though supple and round, this is grounded by a firm mineral core and a quinine note on the very lengthy finish. A stunning Sancerre. Drink now through 2030. 150 cases imported.
