Description
DuMol Estate is a fine example of a wine estate that has grown into an absolute celebrity in a short time and whose wines are now also served in the White House and at the British court. Founded in 1996, DuMOL is dedicated to crafting vineyard-focused Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from distinctive locations in Russia's cool-climate River Valley. Andy Smith - the Winemaker means by vineyard oriented “As a 'vineyard up' winery we stay very close to the ingredients, close to the vineyards. Our winemaking technique is secondary to what we achieve in the field.” ANDY SMITH
Winemaker, viticulturist and partner Andy Smith leads a small and experienced team at DuMOL to create wines of depth, clarity and elegance through attention to detail in the vineyards and vintage-specific viticulture. DuMOL believes that the farmer's footsteps are the best fertilizer. Building on twenty-five years of experience, DuMOL also grows and produces small amounts of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Mencía from some of the best vineyards in Sonoma and Napa. The entire DuMOL portfolio is released via mailing list assignments, with select wines distributed to top restaurants around the world.
Our best Chardonnay of the 2020 vintage and one of the best Chardonnays we've ever bottled. Not our words but this is what winemaker Andy Smith says about the 2020 vintage. The DuMol 2020 Estate typifies the style of the vintage - density and concentration, with high acidity and driving energy. It is a wine that can mature for at least ten years and develop even greater complexity in the bottle. There is a wonderful interplay between floral, fresh herbs and fruit characters, both aromatically and on the palate. The low yields of the 2020 vines for the deep, rich structure. The high natural acidity cuts through all this density so the flavors ring out long and clear. Intensely fragrant aromas of nectarine, apricot and citrus with lily, sage and thyme. Flavors of lime and lemongrass float the palate with lively zest. The texture of the wine is deep and enveloping, but there is tremendous energy and lift to the finish that is infused with sinewy mineral acidity. As far as we are concerned, a magical wine.

The 2020 Chardonnay Estate Vineyard is scented of apricot, jasmine, cashew and pretty herbal undertones, with youthful new oak spices. The medium-bodied palate offers unmatched concentration and balancing freshness, with a broad, satiny texture, a deep core of stone fruit and a very long, flavorful finish. This will continue to unwind in bottle over the next decade.

From: California North Coast: Eyes Wide Open (Jan 2022)
The 2020 Chardonnay DuMOL Estate Vineyard is classy, elegant and wonderfully polished from start to finish. Lemon confit, flowers, white pepper and chalk are some of the notes that grace this exquisite Chardonnay from DuMOL. All the elements are so nicely put together.
- By Antonio Galloni on June 2022
Andy Smith and his team turned out a positively stellar set of 2020 Sonoma wines in what was one of the most challenging years ever. To be sure, the 2020s are on the lighter side, the result of drought and heat that shocked the vines, plus the necessity of harvest that was accelerated in some spots to avoid fires. But the wines are clean and expressive.

The DuMol Estate is located in the extreme southwest of the Russian River Valley subregion in the well-known Sonoma Valley. The winery has 25 hectares in production that are cultivated according to the rules of biodynamics. The vineyards are on an eastern slope and therefore enjoy the morning sun. DuMol's vineyards are located close to the Pacific in the so-called "Cool Climate" zone. In the early morning these vineyards are covered with a thin blanket of fog and in the afternoon it becomes pleasantly warm, but a light breeze from the Pacific keeps the temperature from reaching the extreme.
DuMol Estate was created through a collaboration between Kerry Murphy and Michael Verlander. Later, the talented winemaker Andy Smith joins them. Since the beginning in 1996, DuMol has been able to produce beautiful wines, mainly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also Viognier, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon should not be missed. Most of the grapes come from Green Valley, an area that falls within the boundaries of Russian River Valley. In addition, the winery obtains grapes from several winegrowers on the basis of long-term contracts. These vintners grow their vines in Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros.
After 20 successful years, a new winery of no less than 19,600 square meters is being built. This gives DuMol a capacity of 20,000 boxes, but only 15,000 are produced annually. In this way, DuMol can guarantee its quality annually. The vinification room is equipped with the most advanced technology and arranged in such a way that world-class wines can be produced here. The viticultural approach is fully adapted to each plot with its own soil type and microclimate. DuMol's goal is to produce wines that are clean, vibrant, pure and intense. The wines are not named after the plot or the region, but after the names of clients and family members.
The winery remained under the radar of the general public for a while, partly because Michael and Kerry did little to promote their wines. Their philosophy was that quality will speak for itself. That is now getting over and the winery has grown into an absolute celebrity in a short time and whose wines are now also served in the White House and at the British court.
“As a 'vineyard up' winery, we remain very close to the ingredients, close to the vineyards. Our winemaking technique is secondary to what we achieve in the field.”
