Description
DuMol Estate is a fine example of a wine estate that has grown into an absolute celebrity in a short time and whose wines are now also served in the White House and at the British court. Founded in 1996, DuMOL is dedicated to crafting vineyard-focused Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from distinctive locations in Russia's cool-climate River Valley. Andy Smith - the Winemaker means by vineyard oriented “As a 'vineyard up' winery we stay very close to the ingredients, close to the vineyards. Our winemaking technique is secondary to what we achieve in the field.” ANDY SMITH
Winemaker, viticulturist and partner Andy Smith leads a small and experienced team at DuMOL to create wines of depth, clarity and elegance through attention to detail in the vineyards and vintage-specific viticulture. DuMOL believes that the farmer's footsteps are the best fertilizer. Building on twenty-five years of experience, DuMOL also grows and produces small amounts of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Mencía from some of the best vineyards in Sonoma and Napa. The entire DuMOL portfolio is released via mailing list assignments, with select wines distributed to top restaurants around the world.
Throughout DuMol's more than 25-year history, they have focused intensely on capturing the essence of their specialty vineyards - terroir wines. The 2019 Dumol Finn Russian River Valley is already the 20th vintage of this highly sought after and most sought after Pinot Noir. This wine is a complex bottling of the two favourite, adjoining vineyard plots on soils of sand and clay. After manual picking, the wine ages for 15 months in 45% new French oak from the Grandcru under the Barriques, namely barrels made by Chassin, Mercury & Atelier Center in France. The Finn is a very pure, authentic, complex Pinot Noir that combines layers of ripe fruit with the dynamic freshness that typifies the Russian River valley. The Dumol Finn Pinot noir is always characterized by an aroma and flavor profile: dark, wild berries, truffle sweetness and a spicy edge. Lively, smooth and layered on the palate, the wine retains its clarity despite the breadth and concentration of its sprawling fruit core. Excellent purity and focus are followed by a long lingering finish with fragrant orange zest amongst the deep dark fruit notes.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Finn features scents of raspberries, rhubarb and red cherries, with nuances of tobacco leaves, damp earth and mushrooms. The medium-bodied palate is silky and lifted, yet concentrated for its slender frame, with spicy fruits and a long finish.

From: Sonoma: 2021 New Releases (Jan 2021)
The 2019 Pinot Noir Finn is another fabulous wine in this range. Rich and explosive, the Finn possesses tremendous fruit density, but in the mid-weight style of the year. Dark cherry, plum, lavender and spice are all kicked up several notches. This racy Russian River Pinot hits all the right notes.

This is a pretty remarkable set of new releases from DuMOL. The Pinots achieved a level of richness that was not easy in a year with a fair amount of rain early in the season, while the Syrahs and Chardonnays are terrific. Winemaker Andy Smith describes 2019 as a year with uneven flowering, especially in Pinot and Syrah, which resulted in small bunches and naturally low yields. Vineyards required just one pass to adjust crop levels, as opposed to three in 2018. On paper 2019 is a vintage with low acids for the Chardonnays vis-à-vis 2018 and lower tannins for the Pinots as well. In my view, though, the biggest driver of style at DuMOL is an emphasis on freshness and energy that defines the wines today as compared to a decade ago, when the wines were much more opulent and oaky. Another key development has been DuMOL’s transformation into an estate winery. In the early days all of the fruit here was purchased. Today, nearly all the Pinot and Syrah are estate, as is more than half of the Chardonnay.

The DuMol Estate is located in the extreme southwest of the Russian River Valley subregion in the well-known Sonoma Valley. The winery has 25 hectares in production that are cultivated according to the rules of biodynamics. The vineyards are on an eastern slope and therefore enjoy the morning sun. DuMol's vineyards are located close to the Pacific in the so-called "Cool Climate" zone. In the early morning these vineyards are covered with a thin blanket of fog and in the afternoon it becomes pleasantly warm, but a light breeze from the Pacific keeps the temperature from reaching the extreme.
DuMol Estate was created through a collaboration between Kerry Murphy and Michael Verlander. Later, the talented winemaker Andy Smith joins them. Since the beginning in 1996, DuMol has been able to produce beautiful wines, mainly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but also Viognier, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon should not be missed. Most of the grapes come from Green Valley, an area that falls within the boundaries of Russian River Valley. In addition, the winery obtains grapes from several winegrowers on the basis of long-term contracts. These vintners grow their vines in Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros.
After 20 successful years, a new winery of no less than 19,600 square meters is being built. This gives DuMol a capacity of 20,000 boxes, but only 15,000 are produced annually. In this way, DuMol can guarantee its quality annually. The vinification room is equipped with the most advanced technology and arranged in such a way that world-class wines can be produced here. The viticultural approach is fully adapted to each plot with its own soil type and microclimate. DuMol's goal is to produce wines that are clean, vibrant, pure and intense. The wines are not named after the plot or the region, but after the names of clients and family members.
The winery remained under the radar of the general public for a while, partly because Michael and Kerry did little to promote their wines. Their philosophy was that quality will speak for itself. That is now getting over and the winery has grown into an absolute celebrity in a short time and whose wines are now also served in the White House and at the British court.
