Description
Daniel Twardowski and the Background of Pinot Noix Arboise
Daniel Twardowski is a winemaker from the Mosel region known for his clear style and rigorous interpretation of Spätburgunder. His vineyards are situated on steep, well-drained slopes with gravel and slate soils. With Pinot Noix Arboise, he presents a lighter, more accessible Pinot Noir that still evokes the Mosel terroir. This cuvée is a prime example of how Twardowski combines subtlety and freshness in an elegant wine. You can find extensive background information about the estate under the "Winery" tab.
The Mosel terroir and soil composition
Twardowski's vineyards are situated on steep slopes with slate and gravel soils. This soil structure is ideal for Spätburgunder because it provides good drainage and forces the roots to penetrate deeply, contributing to minerality, tension, and freshness. The cool nights and temperate summers of the Mosel guarantee slow ripening and preserve the natural acidity, resulting in wines with a distinct bite and a fine, refreshing structure.
Pinot Noix Arboise uses fruit from younger vines, which generally results in slightly lighter wines. However, the soil and climate allow the wine to retain a compelling minerality and purity. The location and microclimate give the wine tension and distinct aromatic intensity.
Grape, vinification and style of the 2020 Pinot Noix Arboise
The 2020 vintage is made from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). The grapes were carefully selected, naturally with an emphasis on freshness and purity, all by hand on the steep slopes. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in primarily used barriques, which provides structure without overpowering the fruit. The natural cork complements the house's understated, classic style.
This method results in a wine that is delicate, transparent, and refined. No heavy extraction, no excess tannin. The focus is on freshness, pure fruit, and minerality. This makes the Pinot Noix Arboise 2020 a charming, open Spätburgunder that can be enjoyed young, but can certainly age for a few more years.
Color, aroma and taste of the 2020 Pinot Noix Arboise
The color is bright ruby red with a slight sheen, typical of a fresh Pinot Noir from the Mosel region. On the nose, the wine reveals delicate red fruit notes such as sour cherry and blackcurrant, combined with floral notes and a mineral touch of slate. After aeration, subtle hints of forest floor and a touch of spice emerge, adding depth.
On the palate, the wine is sleek and elegant, with fine, soft tannins and a fresh acidity that beautifully carries the flavor. Aromas of sour cherry and cassis are followed by a minerally undertone and a subtle saline sharpness, making for a long, clean, and refreshing finish. This Pinot Grigio is medium-bodied with a delicate texture, balancing freshness and refinement.
The 2020 Pinot Noix Arboise scored 93 points and has a drinking window from 2024 to around 2030. This is a Spätburgunder with a clear Mosel signature and an example of how beautiful Pinot Noir from the Mosel is.
