Château Coutet is one of the oldest estates in Sauternes, an appellation with a magical set of conditions that allows it to produce some of the finest sweet wines in the world. Coutet, classified 1er Cru Classé since 1855, has for more than a century an exceptional heritage belonging to the de la Lur Saluces family, of the famous Chateau d'Yquem. It is currently owned and operated by Philippe and Dominique Baly in a technical and commercial partnership with Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA The Coutet is a blend of Sémillon with some Sauvignon Blanc a few percent Muscadelle The fermentation is in 100% new barriques. Aging for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
The Coutet has a pale lemon-gold color, which rolls out of the glass with energetic notes of lemon tart, grapefruit, mango and lime with hints of chopped almonds, honey, candle wax and straw, plus a hint of sea spray. The palate has amazing balance, wrapped in a satiny texture and seamless acidity, with a long and mineral finish. After a few years, delicate notes of spices, exotic fruits, fresh ginger and candied fruits develop in a delicate harmony. The Coutet is rich, seductive yet balanced.

The 2020 Coutet has a pale lemon-gold color, waltzing out of the glass with energetic notes of lemon tart, pink grapefruit, green mango and lime blossoms, with hints of chopped almonds, clover honey, candle wax and straw, plus a waft of sea spray. The palate is all class, featuring ethereal intensity and amazing poise, enveloped in a satiny texture and seamless acidity, finishing long and mineral laced. Currently, while it is just a tick or so down on the impressive 2019, I love the restraint and energy of this 2020 and wouldn't be surprised if it eventually spreads its wings and surpasses its showier sibling over time.

A Barsac with dried-apple, apricot and spice character. The botrytis comes through with a healthy and clean nature to it. Medium-bodied and medium-sweet with a spicy finish.

From: Bordeaux at the Crossroads: 2023 En Primeur (April 2024)
The 2023 Coutet is stellar. Soaring aromatics and bright acids drive through a core of lemon confit, apricot, mint, spice, passion fruit and pineapple. The interplay of deep, layered flavors and energy is so compelling.

From: The Dalmatian Vintage: Bordeaux 2023 (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Coutet has a tightly-wound bouquet that demands more coaxing than its peers. It typically already possesses laser-sharp focus and is less flamboyant than fellow Barsacs, underpinned and sharpened by its limestone soils. The palate is well balanced with intense botrytised fruit, lightly spiced dried honey and orange rind notes, just a hint of apricot in the background, stretching out on the finish that lingers on the tongue. I am not sure it is the best Coutet in recent years, but it is certainly a very fine contribution to the vintage that should age well in bottle.
