Description
the story of Caroline Morey
Caroline Morey is the eldest daughter of the renowned Jean-Marc Morey. In 2014, after her father's retirement, she acquired some of the family's vineyards to start her own estate. Today, she shares a winery in Chassagne-Montrachet with her husband, Pierre-Yves Colin, where they craft elite red and white Burgundies that are at the pinnacle of what is possible in this legendary region. The Morey family has been in Chassagne since the mid-16th century, and it was Albert Morey who first began bottling estates in 1950. His prized heritage vineyards throughout Chassagne and Santenay passed to his son, Jean-Marc, and now to Caroline. She shares a similar winemaking approach with her husband, using indigenous yeasts, fermenting and aging the wines in 350-liter barrels, and forgoing battonage. In just a few vintages, Caroline has conquered the world with wines of precision, purity, mineral intensity and an extraordinary clarity of terroir.
the character of 1er Cru Vergers
Les Vergers is one of Chassagne-Montrachet's most prized Premier Cru vineyards. Its location on the Puligny-Montrachet side creates a unique microclimate. The soil consists of limestone and light clay, with many small white stones that retain heat and ensure good drainage. This terroir produces elegant, fresh, and minerally wines with a refined structure.
The old vines in Vergers yield small, concentrated grapes. The combination of age, limestone, and altitude produces Chardonnay with tension, pure fruit expression, and a subtle salinity. Wines from Vergers are known for their balance between ripeness and precision, with a distinct floral note.
the 2020 wine year in Chassagne-Montrachet
The 2020 vintage was warm, but cool nights preserved the acidity. This resulted in wines with ripe fruit and energetic freshness. In Chassagne-Montrachet, the vintage produced exceptionally balanced wines, with tension and a deep aromatic core.
For Vergers, 2020 was an excellent year, as the calcareous soil and the ventilation effect of the higher altitude effectively absorbed the heat. The vintage's concentration is carried by lively acidity, resulting in a wine that can be both rich and taut. The 2020 style is therefore perfectly suited to Vergers' terroir.
vinification and style of Caroline Morey
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. After a gentle pressing, slow fermentation follows. Caroline chooses to age the wine in oak barrels, only a small portion of which are new. This gives the wine a fine structure without oak notes overpowering the freshness or minerality.
Maturation typically lasts twelve to eighteen months. The wines are not heavily aged, but retain an open, elegant style with plenty of tension. Caroline works with minimal intervention to fully express the purity of the terroir.
color, smell and taste of the 2020 Vergers
The color is bright straw yellow with a slight sheen. The aroma opens with notes of yellow apple, pear, and ripe citrus fruit. Subtle floral aromas, light spices, and a delicate hint of almond add depth. Mineral nuances evoke the chalky soil, with a subtle salty and chalky note.
On the palate, the wine is pure and precise. The attack is elegant, with ripe white fruit and a soft roundness. This is followed by a clearly layered mid-palate where tension and freshness alternate with creaminess and depth. The structure is refined, with lively acidity that provides length and balance.
The wine displays a subtle concentration typical of old vines. Mineral notes remain, giving the wine structure. The finish is long, slightly salty, and clean, with a harmonious combination of fruit, acidity, and delicate spice.
The 2020 Vergers is already showing beautiful expression, but will continue to refine in the coming years. The balance between mineral tension and fruit makes this wine particularly suitable for both immediate consumption and several years of bottle aging.
