Description
Baglio del Cristo is now considered one of Sicily's finest wineries, which is currently considered a rapidly emerging Italian wine region. In 2000, the Bonetta brothers began planting vines in Agrigento. The family wanted to fulfill their dream of producing wines of the highest quality. They succeeded admirably; the wines were released in 2009 and immediately won awards.
The LAUDÀRI is a 100% Chardonnay from Sicilia Denominazione di Origine Controllata. Laudri loosely translates to "Song of Praise," and it deserves this praise for being the first Sicilian Chardonnay. In the glass, this beautiful Chardonnay has a bright straw-yellow color with light, clear notes from the famous limestone soils of Baglio del Cristo di Campobello. The grapes are normally harvested by hand at the end of August from a vineyard situated on a hilly terrain with predominantly calcareous soil. The vineyard is located in Campobello di Licata at an altitude of between 230 and 260 meters above sea level, 7,500 meters from the coast. The vineyard therefore has a unique microclimate with day-to-night temperature fluctuations of up to 20 degrees Celsius thanks to the sea breeze. Minimal intervention is also required because the sea breeze keeps the vineyard healthy (deterring aphids and mold).
The Chardonnay grapes are harvested by hand in small crates. After destemming and crushing, the must temperature is reduced to 8-10°C for maceration. This ensures a better and gentler extraction of all the aromas. A light pressing follows, after which the free-run wine is separated and decanted through the process of natural sedimentation at a low temperature. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, after which it is aged on its lees (sur lie) for 3-4 months in oak barrels with weekly bâtonnage. The wine is then bottle-aged for another 8-12 months before being released. Only a few thousand bottles of this Laudari are produced each year. This superb Sicilian Chardonnay is fragrant, with aromas of citrus and flowers, and hints of butter, mango, and yellow plum on a vanilla-tinged base. Soft and full-bodied, clearly defined by freshness and elegant flavors, in perfect harmony and with a lingering finish.
WINE AND FOOD SUGGESTIONS
Roasted chicken with lemon and rosemary
The Laudari's full structure complements the juicy, light chicken. The rosemary complements the wine's spicy notes, while lemon highlights the Chardonnay's crisp acidity.
Pasta with salmon, cream and peas
The creamy sauce harmonizes beautifully with the wine's soft oak notes and round texture. The salmon enhances the richness, while the peas add a fresh green note that maintains the balance.
Risotto with mushrooms and Parmesan cheese
The earthy flavors of the mushrooms and the umami of the Parmesan pair perfectly with the wine's full body. The subtle oak notes in the Laudari enhance the roasted, savory elements of this dish.
Grilled zucchini with lemon and feta
A refreshing vegetarian option. The wine's freshness complements the lemon, and the creamy, salty character of the feta contrasts pleasantly with the wine's roundness.
Casserole with whitefish, leek and potato
A gentle preparation that preserves the delicate character of the fish. The leek adds a mildly spicy note, and the creamy texture of the potato combines well with the wine's texture.

The 2018 Sicilia Chardonnay Laudàri is a plump and juicy white with bright tones of bergamot, preserved lemon, sweet almond and mature orchard fruit. The oak spice is well contained and tucked into the back of all that ripe Sicilian fruit. This Chardonnay does a brief four months in barrel. There is some mint and oregano on the close. Laudàri would be gorgeous with Sicilian couscous with tuna, eggplant and pistachios. Exactly 11,928 bottles were made.
Carmelo Bonetta and his family run this estate located in Campobello di Licata, in the province of Agrigento. The vines are planted about 300 meters above sea level, and they benefit from cooling breezes at just eight kilometers inland from the coast.

Both nationally (Perswijn) and internationally (Monica Larner, Robert Parker, Bibenda and the Italian Guild of Sommeliers), the wines of Baglio-del-cristo-di-campobello are recognized as the best Nero d'Avola in Sicily.
In Campobello di Licata, everyone knows the large modern white wine cellar that is built on a hill with calcareous soil that reflects the light of the sun. On this hill - three hundred meters above sea level and 5km far from the Gulf of Licata - is a large wooden Christ, placed two hundred years ago by a farmer. It has since become a place of pilgrimage for winegrowers who come to pray for the quality of their wine once it is vinified.
From the beginning - says Carmelo Bonetta - we have tried to make wines with a strong expression and personality. We try to use the maximum potential of our terroir because a lot of the attention of our work goes initially to the vineyard and then to the work in the cellar, we respect what the earth gives us through limited productions and small yields.
For many years, the Bonetta family sold their grapes to other wine companies at a low price. In 2006 the decision was made to bottle their own wines in order to see the fruits of their labor in their own bottle. This also kicked off the construction of a new winery. "One day, he remembers", because of the crisis and the associated low cost per kg of the grapes, we gathered around the table with the whole family, because we had to make a choice: either abandon everything and sell or our van our own grapes make our own wines. The knowledge that we had always worked hard in our vineyards and that our vines were in optimal condition made us decide to abandon total sales and we decided from then on to do everything ourselves from the vineyard to the bottle. The evocative names of our wines such as "Lu Patri" (from the father of the Sicilian grape varieties, Nero d 'Avola) were born.
Since the very beginning, after the first harvest and commercialization, the first major awards and prizes came: "As my father Angelo always says" our best reward is the appreciation of the customer, of those who drink our wines and continue to appreciate them by then to buy again. This is our recognition and our greatest success. "
"Today Baglio del Cristo di Campobello produces about three hundred thousand bottles (divided into eight types of wine: four white and four red), in addition, there remains a constant source of ideas and projects for the future, such as research into producing without the addition of sulfur dioxide, This in collaboration with one of the best Italian oenologists Ricardo Cotarella We are aware that this is a very complex subject, which requires time and a lot of money, but we do not make any concessions on quality. but we have taken a step in the right direction, from now on we will only work according to the principles of ecological sustainability, with love and respect for everything that comes from the earth. The climate here is extremely ventilated with frequent temperature fluctuations. our lead, for example, to work in the vineyards without fertilizers, only manure from our own animals is used, this is the only way Our vines are resistant to all kinds of diseases, making chemical products completely unnecessary.
There is a lot of interest from abroad with regard to Sicilian wines. We are a small wine company committed to building values, strong bonds with our partners. Our importers are pre-screened and selected by us because it is people who sell wines with their hearts and who, through their expertise, can convey our philosophy and that of our wines. In the first place, they are all wine lovers who survive despite the crisis through their craftsmanship and drive. "
