In 2023, Lionel Messi embarked on a new chapter in his career with the Swiss wine company MM Winemaker SA : winemaking. Not as a promotional stunt, but as a true wine project that combines precision and passion. MM Winemaker has over 30 years of experience and over 400 international awards. Based in St. Moritz, Switzerland, the team works with historic vineyards in both Switzerland and Italy.
The GOAT 10 Collection was presented in October 2024 at Expovina Zurich for the American and South American markets, and the wine will arrive in Europe in 2025. The name refers to Messi's nickname "Greatest of All Time" and his legendary number 10. The collection's goal: to create wines that represent dedication, balance, and exceptional quality.
We're regularly approached with requests to include wines from well-known names, but we usually politely decline. Grand Cru wines aren't about the name on the label, but rather about what's inside the bottle. The Lionel Messi Collection, however, is different. It's a serious wine project with a strong foundation, supported by the Swiss winery MM Winemaker SA and overseen by top oenologist Michel Rolland.
Sicily – between sea, sun and volcano
Syrah comes from southern Italy, on the slopes surrounding Mount Etna. Here, volcanic soils, Mediterranean warmth, and fresh sea breezes converge. The combination of sun, altitude, and minerality gives the wine intense concentration and layering. The Etna region is known for wines of power and elegance, where fruit, spice, and structure come together in harmony.
Vinification and maturation
The 2022 Lionel GOAT 10 Syrah IGT is made from 100% Syrah grapes, hand-harvested on the slopes of Mount Etna. After gentle destemming and crushing, controlled fermentation takes place at a low temperature to preserve the fruit. Malolactic fermentation then takes place, giving the wine smoothness and depth. The wine is then aged for 24 months in oak —partly French, partly American—resulting in rounded tannins, subtle toasted notes, and added complexity.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep ruby red color that reflects the intensity of the Sicilian terroir. The nose reveals aromas of ripe blackcurrants, plums, and black cherries, complemented by notes of black pepper, tobacco, and a light smokiness. On the palate, it is full-bodied, spicy, and harmonious, with velvety tannins and a mineral undertone derived from the volcanic soil. The finish is long and layered, with a hint of pure cocoa and Mediterranean herbs.

De wijnstokken van Valais groeien onder extreme omstandigheden – koude nachten, schisteuze bodems, duizelingwekkende hellingen – en leveren juist daardoor topkwaliteit.
