Description
The Luigi Baudana Barolo Cerretta is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes from 40 year old vines from many different clones, creating a wine with depth and soul - a direct reflection of Luigi Baudana's lifelong work. Sober and very mineral expression of Barolo. Aromas of dark cherries and raspberries jump vividly from the glass. Hints of iron, menthol, new leather add to the depth and intrigue of this wine. Refined and polished, Cerretta has an extra layer of tannins, an important structure and a lively acidity that is almost buried by its exquisitely luscious fruit. Luigi and Fiorina Baudani are local legends of the Serralunga region and have been engaged in grape growing for over 30 years. In 2009, GD Vajra was given the responsibility of making wines from these grapes and expanding the Baudani family's legacy.
Luigi Baudana has the distinction of being one of the smallest boutique wineries in Serralunga d'Alba and the wider Barolo region. Covering only 2.6 hectares, they focus on quality, not quantity, and their selection of vineyards is second to none, with vineyards in the village's prime crus. They really are the epitome of a garage owner producer!
The 2019 vintage was characterized by an early bud break, followed by a delayed flowering, causing a gradual maturation period. With all these factors combined, it created one of the longest and last harvested vintages of the decade and the 2019 vintage is therefore seen as a top vintage for authentic Barolos and Barberscos with an ideal growing season for the late-flowering Nebbiolo. With such a long aging period, the grapes were blessed with exceptional phenolic ripeness and a prominent backbone of acidity. This is reminiscent of vintage from 2013, which can also age so beautifully.

The 2018 Barolo Cerretta offers good focus with a sharp and linear style that gives way to forest berry, wild rose, rusty nail and crushed stone. The wine is extremely direct, and that's what sets it apart. In that sense, this wine is faithful to the characteristics of Serralunga d'Alba. The soils of Cerretta see a layer of white marl on the surface and red clay further down; that's where those rusty sensations must come from.

From: 2019 Barolo: Back on Track (Jan 2023)
The 2019 Barolo Cerretta is packed with dark cherry, smoke, gravel, blood orange incense, scorched earth, licorice and mocha. This ample, full-bodied Barolo offers tremendous depth and textural intensity. Powerful and brooding, with tons of muscle and tannin, the Cerretta is incredibly promising. It is the most potent wine in this portfolio, by a pretty substantial range.

These are some of the most impressive wines I have tasted from Luigi Baudana, the Serralunga estate the Vajra family has managed since 2009. The wines are made at the Baudana winery in Serralunga, and then raised in the Vajra family's large facility in Barolo. All three Barolos are exceptional, from the village wine to the two crus. The Baudana Barolo is the more fruit-forward of the two single-vineyard Barolos, while the Cerretta is slightly darker and more muscular.
"It was a year with an early bud break but with late flowering and a late harvest; in other words, a year with a long growing season, one of the longest of the last decade." Giuseppe Vajra explained. "We had challenges with heavy rain in spring, but 2018 helped us understand we had to act quickly and decisively, so we did," he added. Harvest took place between October 11 and 18. "The wines extracted easily," Aldo Vajra opined. "We gave the 2019s 28 days on the skins, less than 2018 and 2017 and far less than years like 2010, with submerged cap maceration. Time in wood was about 21 months for the vineyard designates.”

G.D. Vajra is a testament to the harmonious relationship between terroir and the rich legacy of a passionate winemaking family. Situated in the renowned Barolo appellation, this enchanting estate has been crafting exceptional wines for generations, capturing the essence of the land and the profound stories that shaped their journey.
The cornerstone of G.D. Vajra's wine making philosophy lies in the concept of terroir. Every bottle that bears their name is an expression of the unique characteristics of the vineyards and the distinct microclimates that bless the Langhe region. From the ethereal vineyard of Bricco delle Viole to the enchanting slopes of Fossati and Ravera, each parcel of land is meticulously tended, allowing the grapes to mature and develop their individual personalities.
The Vajra family, led by the visionary Aldo Vajra, has been nurturing vineyards and crafting wines since the 1970s. Aldo made his first organic wines at the age of 18 and became one of the first wineries to replant the forgotten grape variety Freisa. He continued to innovate with the plantings of less traditional varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Noir. The Vajra family to this day remain steadfast in their commitment to sustainable practices, seeking to preserve the natural biodiversity of their vineyards for generations to come.
The Vajra family's winemaking journey is a testament to their unwavering love for their heritage. With a blend of tradition and innovation, they have honed their craft over the years, producing wines that carry the spirit of their ancestors. Whether it's the iconic Barolo, the elegant Dolcetto, or the vibrant Barbera, each bottle is a reflection of the Vajra family's deep-rooted passion and dedication.
