The DO Almansa is located in the extreme east of La Mancha and is located in a transition area between Meseta and the Mediterranean Sea and borders the DO Alicante (Valencia) and the DOs Jumilla and Yecla (Murcia). The Monastrell and Garnacha grape show its enormous potential in Almansa wine. The vineyards in the Almansa wine region are mainly located on the flat areas with carbon-rich soil in the fertile top layer, which provides ideal conditions for making quality wines from the Almansa wine region. It is an extreme area in terms of temperature. The wine-growing area of Almansa is located 100 kilometers from Benidorm as the crow flies, but the Mediterranean climate on the Costa Blanca is no longer noticeable. In the summer the mercury rises above 40 degrees and in the winter it is freezing cold for months. Little rainfall and the grapes therefore have to work hard and have very deep roots and this gives, among other things, the unique character of the wines from this area.

Bodegas Atalaya was founded in 2007 by the Gil Family. The La Atalaya del Camino is the top seller of the bodega and is a blend of 85% Garnacha Tintorera and 15% Monastrell, planted at about 1000 meters above sea level and aged for 12 months in French oak and then bottled for a further 6 months.

The La Atalaya del Camino has a dark ruby red color. The glass is coated with glycerin and has a super fragrant nose of exotic spices, lavender, frankincense and black raspberry. Juicy, layered and almost meditative, the La Atalaya has a silky finish that is totally unexpected from a wine of this relatively modest price. It has an amazing price / quality and is world wine one of the 3 best selling wines of the Juan Gil group , while this wine is still relatively unknown in the Netherlands.

Vineyard for 2020 Gil Family Estates Atalaya La Atalaya del Camino

In the coastal region of Levante you will find that the challenging limestone soil and limited rainfall, allow for Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrellto thrive. The ancient vines have adapted to these tough conditions and flourish at an altitude of 700 metres. The low yielding vines produce concentrated berries bursting with varietal characteristics, full of rich flavours, and enticing aromas.

Employing innovative methods, winemakers have harnessed the freshness of fruits, resulting in a blend that is full of complexity. While the Garnacha Tintorera grape is the most prominent variety in the blends, the sweet and robust essence of the Monastrell grape remains notably present, adding a unique dimension to the wines.
