Description
The DO Almansa is located in the far east of La Mancha and is in a transition area between Meseta and the Mediterranean Sea and borders the DO Alicante (Valencia) and the DOs Jumilla and Yecla (Murcia). The Monastrell and Garnacha grapes show their enormous potential in Almansa wine. The vineyards in the Almansa wine region are mainly located on the flat areas of land with carbon-rich soil in the fertile top layer, which provides ideal conditions for making quality wines from the Almansa wine region. It is an extreme area in terms of temperature. The wine-growing region of Almansa is located 100 kilometers as the crow flies from Benidorm, but little is left of the Mediterranean climate on the Costa Blanca. In summer the mercury rises above 40 degrees and in winter it is freezing for months. Little precipitation and the grapes have to work hard and root very deeply, which gives the unique character to the wines from this area.
Bodegas Atalaya was founded in 2007 by the Gil Family. The prominent grape variety in Almansa is Garnacha Tintorera-Alicante Bouschet together with Monastrell. This Laya is a 75% Garnacha and 25% Monastrell, located on a vineyard no less than 1000 meters above sea level. This causes significant differences between day and night temperatures, not to mention the differences between summer and winter. After harvest, the wine is aged for 4 months in French oak barrels before being bottled
The Atalaya El Vigía De La Atalaya Organico is a young red wine from certified organic vineyards. The grapes used to produce this wine come from certified organic vineyards of Garnacha Tintorera, located at an average altitude of 700 to 1,000 meters above sea level. The careful and sustainable work carried out in the vineyard and the non-interventionist practices result in a wine that shows all the potential that this grape variety can offer.
The El Vigía De La Atalaya is a special wine that combines complexity, structure and an intense cherry red color. Elegant, fresh and complex nose in which ripe fruit and floral notes predominate. Pleasant and fresh entry into the mouth, balanced and with sweet tannins, elegant with a very seductive velvety texture and a very long finish. This wine is versatile and can be combined with pasta, vegetables, mushrooms, braised meats, sausages, pork, roast meats, red and/or white meats, grilled meats, and young or medium-ripe cheeses.

The 2023 El Vigía de la Atalaya is the second vintage of this pure Garnacha Tintorera from their own organic vineyards, 25- to 30-year-old, dry-farmed vines, a selection from Laya. The wine wants to showcase more varietal expression and more fruit by avoiding aging in oak. It has very ripe tannins and an approachable profile. It has a very herbal nose with notes of tomato vine and tomato juice, juicy, with a medium-bodied palate and abundant, fine tannins. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.84 and 5.7 grams of acidity. This is certified organic. Another bargain. 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2024.
Atalaya is the project in Almansa from the Gil family from Jumilla. They have 110 hectares of vineyards, mostly Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell, mainly in the village of Almansa, from which they produce 450,000 bottles.
2022 was one of the driest vintages in the region but with good rain in March and April, with a very warm and dry summer with abundant heat waves that resulted in a smaller crop of healthy grapes, which resulted in aromatic, structured and powerful wines with good aging potential. 2023 was a very challenging year, again very dry, with an early harvest, low yields and abundant rains in September that forced them to sort, select and discard grapes, which reduced the yield even further and produced up to 40% less than in 2022. Despite everything, the sensation is of fresher wines in 2023 than in 2022.

In the coastal region of Levante you will find that the challenging limestone soil and limited rainfall, allow for Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrellto thrive. The ancient vines have adapted to these tough conditions and flourish at an altitude of 700 metres. The low yielding vines produce concentrated berries bursting with varietal characteristics, full of rich flavours, and enticing aromas.
Employing innovative methods, winemakers have harnessed the freshness of fruits, resulting in a blend that is full of complexity. While the Garnacha Tintorera grape is the most prominent variety in the blends, the sweet and robust essence of the Monastrell grape remains notably present, adding a unique dimension to the wines.
