The DO Almansa is located in the far east of La Mancha and is situated in a transitional area between Meseta and the Mediterranean Sea and borders the DO Alicante (Valencia) and the DOs Jumilla and Yecla (Murcia). The Monastrell and Garnacha grapes show their enormous potential in Almansa wine. The vineyards in the Almansa wine region are mainly located on the flat areas of land with carbon-rich soil in the fertile top layer, which provides ideal conditions for making quality wines from the Almansa wine region. It is an extreme area in terms of temperature. The Almansa wine region is located 100 kilometres away from Benidorm as the crow flies, but little of the Mediterranean climate on the Costa Blanca can be noticed. In the summer the mercury rises to over 40 degrees and in the winter it is freezing cold for months. Little rainfall and the grapes have to work hard and root very deeply and this gives the wines from this area their unique character.

Bodegas Atalaya was founded in 2007 by the Gil Family. The prominent grape variety in Almansa is Garnacha Tintorera-Alicante Bouschet together with Monastrell. This Laya is a 75% Garnacha and 25% Monastrell, located on a vineyard of no less than 1000 meters above sea level. This makes for a big difference between day and night temperatures and then there are the differences between summer and winter.

The vineyards of Garnacha Tintorera, located at about 1,000 meters above sea level, are planted in limestone, sandy and well-drained soils. Maceration-fermentation is carried out in small stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation and subsequent stay of 15 months in new French and American oak barrels, obtaining a wine with its own personality

The Alaya Tierra is the top model of Bodegas Alayas. It is very complete and powerful in its style, but with balance and depth. The wine has an intense ruby red color. Attractive and complex aromatic bouquet in which minerals and very ripe black fruit stand out. We also smell and taste the new wood and in the mouth the wine is broad, powerful, thick and round. Balance the acidity and the silky texture and surprises with a fruity long finish. Ideal as an accompaniment to game and creamy rice dishes, stewed legumes, mushrooms, game and poultry, casseroles, smoked, salted and blue cheeses, grilled and roasted red meat.

In the coastal region of Levante you will find that the challenging limestone soil and limited rainfall, allow for Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrellto thrive. The ancient vines have adapted to these tough conditions and flourish at an altitude of 700 metres. The low yielding vines produce concentrated berries bursting with varietal characteristics, full of rich flavours, and enticing aromas.

Employing innovative methods, winemakers have harnessed the freshness of fruits, resulting in a blend that is full of complexity. While the Garnacha Tintorera grape is the most prominent variety in the blends, the sweet and robust essence of the Monastrell grape remains notably present, adding a unique dimension to the wines.
