Description
History of the Schäfer‑Fröhlich winery
Schäfer‑Fröhlich is a family business in the Nahe with several generations of expertise. Under the leadership of Tim Fröhlich, the winery became world famous in the 1990s through terroir inspiration and extremely low yields. The result is a collection of top-class Rieslings with international prestige.
Region and location: Monzinger Stromberg
The Monzinger Stromberg is a Grand Cru vineyard located on steep south-westerly slopes. The soil consists of blue-grey schist and quartzite with gravelly layers. These structures create strong root pressure and stress on the vines, which leads to highly concentrated fruit with a pronounced mineral character.
Climate and soil in the Nahe region
The Nahe region combines a cool continental climate with strong day-night variations. The location of the Stromberg vineyard on sunny terraces, in combination with stony soils, contributes to optimum ripening. This forms the foundation for wines with tight acidity, intensity and long shelf life.
Production process of the 2023 Stromberg Riesling GG
The grapes are picked by hand and rigorously selected. After a gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for several months on the fine lees. Without clarification, it opens up with maximum texture, purity and aromatic depth. The limited production emphasises the exclusivity of this Grand Cru wine.
Analysis of smell, color and taste of the 2023 edition
The wine presents a pure straw yellow color with a sparkling shine. On the nose, notes of green apple, grapefruit, wet stone and jasmine emerge, with a delicate spiciness. The scent is complex, tight and intense. On the palate, the 2023 Stromberg GG is dry and refined, with fresh, structured acidity and a powerful mineral core. Citrus and stone fruit mingle in balance with a salty minerality. The finish is clear, refreshing and long-lasting, with a subtle bitterness and tension.
Drinking advice and storage potential
This wine is at its best between 2026 and 2028, when tension and minerality merge perfectly with riper fruit tones. Thanks to its firm structure and tight acidity, it will mature effortlessly until at least 2060. When opened young, decanting or opening a day in advance is recommended.
Why choose this Stromberg Riesling from our range
The 2023 Stromberg Grosses Gewächs convinces with its precision, minerality and long finish. Ideal for serious collectors, wine professionals and enthusiasts. It stands for voluminous quality and aging potential, and is an absolute eye-catcher within our German Riesling range.

The 2023 Stromberg GG is cool, precise and pure on the nose, which still has a slight yeasty touch but is also endowed with ripe fruit and salty minerals. It's less tart and fresh than the Felseneck but darker and even more reticent. Silky, juicy and full-bodied on the palate, this Riesling has ripe fruit, plenty of substance and muscle but is still rather sinewy, salty and reductive. It has the potential to become something amazing. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.

From: Nahe, Pfalz & Mittelrhein–Of Wheat, Chaff and Thrill (Sep 2024)
The 2023 Riesling Bockenauer Stromberg Grosses Gewächs is from porphyry with some vines between 80 and 100 years of age. Chervil, lemon blossom and pale lemon zest come together on the fragrant nose. Equal fragrance defines the palate in its litheness, directness and absolute finesse. Gorgeous understatement allows us to see the naked purity of this stony wine. Beautiful, taut and crystalline, this is exquisitely and deliciously hair-raising. (Bone-dry)

Tim Fröhlich is very happy with his 2023 harvest but notes that it was a vintage where you could tell the wheat from the chaff. Initially, it seemed “like a year that would land in your lap. We had rain at the ideal times, and Fröhlich insisted his team stay throughout the summer. They had done the all-important de-leafing in spring within the canopy to create ventilation, but with sufficient moisture, this remained an important task, as did mowing between the rows to prevent rot. This continuous preparatory work helped him and his team with a relatively swift harvest as there was less to sort out as the grapes remained healthy and could be harvested at good ripeness. Fröhlich also credits his steep, stony slopes and their excellent drainage, as well-drained soils are less of a risk factor for rot. Picking started on 16 September and was done within four weeks. The second half of the harvest was “more relaxed” and had better weather than the first. It yielded perfectly healthy grapes “from Gutswein to Auslese.” On the last day of harvest, 15 October, Fröhlich picked Auslese in the Felseneck. The wines received barely any skin contact, and malolactic fermentation was avoided for the white Pinot varieties. He says this was “an early and warm year but with sufficient freshness. Those who invested [in year-round, fine-tuned viticulture] had a great harvest.” The wines present effortless elegance (when, in fact, everything was about effort), and the barrel samples of the GGs I tasted were the final blends—pictures of poise rather than power.

The global demand for Schäfer-Fröhlich wines is constantly increasing, as is the quality. Every new year seems like a new milestone for what Tim Fröhlich is capable of. The wines are exceptionally beautiful, perfectly balanced and have fantastic fruit. The success of Schäfer-Fröhlich is huge. For example, his dry riesling and the spätlese riesling were both named the best in Germany at the 'Königsdisziplinen des deutschen Rieslings' and in the Gault Millau 2013 his spätleses finished in 1st and 4th place.
Tim Fröhlich is called 'the master of spontaneous fermentation', and according to the Gault Millau, the prices of his wines in an international context are 'a joke'. And as Eichelmann says in his eponymous guide: "The wines are getting better and better, have even more precision. Both the dry and the noble sweet Rieslings from Schäfer-Fröhlich are the best in Germany.'
