The Pujanza vineyards that are not bottled separately are blended in the Hado. The grapes in this Hado therefore come from the top vineyards of Bodegas Pujanza . The Hado is not just a wine, but a wine that represents the house style of Bodegas Pujanza and the new movement of the Rioja with wines focused on the fruit in which the wood should not dominate. In addition, owner Carlos wants to have a wine that is affordable in terms of price and that has more than succeeded with the Hado. The Hado is a medium bodied, clean and serious wine. In the nose the wine is nicely ripe but certainly not overripe. Beautiful notes of wood and spices which are very well integrated in both the nose and the palate. In the mouth it has fine tannins that also give the wine a nice storage potential. This is a very good and honest Rioja with a more than excellent price/quality ratio.
Carlos San Pedro is the owner of Bodegas Pujanza who takes an almost manic approach to producing wines of the highest level. Carlos' original idea was to produce a single single vineyard with Pujanza from Laguardia, the capital of the Rioja. But gradually it became clear that the terroirs of the vineyards are unique and different, so he changed his mind and decided to blend the uniqueness of the terroirs in the Hado. Carlos does not use external yeasts, and he consciously chooses to keep the amount of new wood low, but also to age the wines longer in large (used) barriques. Bodegas Pujanza has about 30 hectares of vineyards, all of which are close to the beautiful Bodega. The vineyards are all between 600 (Cisma) and 720 meters (Norte) altitude.
91/100 Parker & 91/100 Suckling
The Hado was also tasted by Hubrecht Duijker (July 2016). See the tasting note below and it can also be found at: https://hubrechtduijker.com/actueel-maandmagazine/
"In the Rioja wine village of Laguardia, at the foot of the towering, sheltering Sierra de Cantabria, Carlos San Pedro (fourteen years ago) started his own domain, Viñedos Pujanza. This now covers 40 hectares, divided into four plots at altitudes between 600 and 720 meters. Carlos, fourth generation of a family of winegrowers, only uses natural yeasts and does not want too much wood in his wines (so few new barrels). Quality and fruit, that is what he strives for. This is beautifully demonstrated by the Pujanza Hado 2012, a mouth-filling, juicy, softly fresh wine made exclusively of tempranillo, with spiciness, indeed controlled wood tones, quite a bit of berry fruit and a long aftertaste. This – literally – impressive wine"
