2023 Paganos La Nieta

With a winemaking tradition dating back to 1870, the Eguren family is among the absolute top with wines such as Sierra Cantabria, San Vicente Manor, and Numanthia-Termes (recently sold to the LVMH group). La Nieta, Eguren's flagship wine, comes from a very small 1.75-hectare vineyard planted in 1975 in Páganos (Laguardia, Rioja Álava) at an altitude of 525 meters above sea level. The soil is very calcareous clay. LaNieta means "Granddaughter" and is a project Eguren initiated after the birth of his granddaughter.

The grapes fermented in four 1,000-liter oak barrels, and the wine matured in new French barriques for 16 months. The nose is subtle, ripe without being overpowering. La Nieta is simultaneously very powerful and very elegant, a combination not easily found. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a very mineral feel. The wine can be enjoyed now, but only with a hearty steak, but you will certainly be rewarded if you let it age for a few more years. Only 5,000 bottles of La Nieta were produced, and this wine is among Spain's finest. Parker also writes about La Nieta , "Nieta has been the star again."
