This beautiful deep red, almost black cherry red, colored Primitivo del Salento igp 'Santufili' is made from 100% Primitivo grapes. In recent years, Primitivo has become one of the grapes of the Italian south, especially on the Adriatic side, in the Apulia region (also called Puglia). The Santufili is the classic wine based on the Primitivo grape. Primitivo is the local variant of Californian Zinfandel. A very deep and intense wine is obtained through a long fermentation on the skins of the ripe, sun-baked grapes. The Primitivo grapes come from centuries-old vineyards, a few kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. The yields in these vineyards are particularly low, which explains the powerful and full character of the wines. After fermentation, the wine matures for another seven or eight months in wooden barrels. The result is broad, sultry, powerful and mouth-filling, bursting with fruit.
This is a muscle wine but with good freshness and elegance. The nose bursts with notes of dark ripe cherries and blackcurrants, currants, warm, vanilla, a sweet spiciness from the glass, but everything is beautifully balanced, beautifully rich and powerful, very sultry and intense. In the mouth the wine is tasty and juicy, delicious fruit in the taste, berries and black cherries, soft and ripe tannins, wonderfully sultry, powerful and full wine with character! The Mocavero Santufili goes well with roasted meat, mature cheeses, spicy dishes, and a wine for special occasions.
Mocavero Winery
The roots of Wijnhuis Mocavero lie in the tradition of making regional wine. In addition, this great winery also has one foot in the modern era. This combination guarantees carefully made, traditional wines with a modern touch. The company was founded in 1950 by Tommaso Congedo. He built it up over the years together with his cousin (uncle), Pietro Mocavero. This was responsible for the renewal of the vineyards and the adaptation of the cellar to modern technology. Pietro Mocavero has two sons, Francesco and Marco, who have gradually taken over his work since 1987. Francesco is in charge of the company, his brother Marco is responsible for wine production. This means that the third generation of the family is currently responsible for the ins and outs of this family business in Monteroni di Lecce, in the heart of the Salerno region. A beautiful series of wines are made that form a connection between the tradition of the region and modern wine culture. The red wines and rosé use the classic, well-known grapes of the region: Negroamaro, Montepulciano, Malvasia Nera and Primitivo. A conscious and important choice for the authenticity of the great wines and grapes of this region. White is made here from contemporary Chardonnay from France. The Mocavero brothers have committed themselves to continuously improving the quality of the wines. The grapes often come from older vineyards and are picked when they are perfectly ripe. Without exception, the wines are beautifully powerful and intense in character, but the fruit is also clearly present. Beautiful, deeply colored wines, true calling cards of the new Puglia.
Mocavero winery in Apulia / Puglia (Italy)
The winery Mocavero is located in the Apulia region, or as the region is called in Italian: the Puglia. This elongated region, which is the heel of the Italian boot, is, together with the Veneto and Sicily, Italy's largest producer of wine. In the past, many blends came from here, which were often used in other parts of Italy, but also abroad, to strengthen their own wines. In recent years, Apulia has increasingly focused on the production of quality wine and quantity is no longer the first priority. The fact of Apulia as 'the wine cellar of Italy' is therefore obsolete. Due to its favorable location, the predominantly hilly landscape and the good soil qualities, which vary from calcareous and clay-containing to sandy, excellent wines can be made in Apulia.
