Description
Perrot-Minot is a winery in Burgundy, France, known for its exceptional wines from the Côte de Nuits. Perrot-Minot was founded in the first half of the 19th century and has been in the hands of the same family for five generations. In 1993, Christophe Perrot-Minot, the current winemaker, took over the management of the estate. Christophe has since made significant improvements both in the vineyard and in the cellar, focusing on biodynamic methods and low yields to increase the quality of the wines.
The Perrot-Minot estate owns around 12 hectares of vineyards, located in the Côte de Nuits. They own plots in well-known villages such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne-Romanée. A key feature of their wine production is the use of very old vines, often over 50 years old, which contributes to the concentration and depth of their wines. The "Ultra" cuvees "La Richemone" and "Combe d'Orveau" are perfect examples of this.
Christophe Perrot-Minot is known for his pursuit of pure, elegant and well-structured wines. He uses minimal intervention during winemaking, ensuring that the wines best reflect the character of their terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand and the use of new oak is carefully dosed so as not to overpower the fruitiness of the wines.
The 2018 Domaine Perrot-Minot Nuits-Saint-Georges "Les Murgers des Cras" was produced under the direction of winemaker Christophe Perrot-Minot. This wine is composed of grapes from three Premier Cru vineyards: Les Murgers, Les Cras and La Richemone. Although technically classified as a Village wine, it clearly reflects the quality and complexity of a Premier Cru. The 2018 Domaine Perrot-Minot Nuits-Saint-Georges "Les Murgers des Cras has aromas of wild dark berries, cherries, forest floor and earthy notes. On the palate the wine is elegant, tight, intense with a muscular medium body with fine depth and a subtle, persistent finish.

The 2016 Nuit St Georges Les Murgers des Cras is a blend of 20% Les Murgers, 20% Les Cras and 60% La Richmoine. I appreciate the energy of the aromatics here, the scents springing from the glass to offer bright Morello cherry and crushed strawberry scents, the mineralité neatly interwoven. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, nimbler than its peers with fine delineation and poise on the finish. This will be well worth seeking out.
“The biggest challenge was the frost and how to determine the order of the harvest since some vineyards were not impacted by the frost,” Christophe Perrot-Minot told me down in his tasting room in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis. “I lost around 60% of the total crop with some vineyards completely wiped out. It was difficult to know when to pick. The Chambolle area was late and we stopped the harvest for a few days before restarting. The maturity was different within the same parcel because frost affected vineyards differently. It was a challenge to sort the fruit even though it was a small vintage. Some fruit simply was not ripe enough. The texture of the skin was different and you could see this on the sorting table. I wanted to keep the diversity of fruit but you cannot take it too far. I cannot remember the exact date that I started the harvest. The extraction was almost non-existent, more remontage than pigeage, because the fruit was already so concentrated.” Christophe always make me laugh, remarking that one of my comments a couple of years ago, suggesting that he should not be overly fastidious when it comes to sorting, not to get anguished by the odd under-ripe berry, prompted him to reassess his approach. Well, all I can say is that he has produced some extremely impressive wines, especially a grand cru level: Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin all excelling in this vintage. It is not as consistent as other vintages that I have tasted simply because the challenges of the growing season would not permit that. However, overall this was a great showing from Christophe even if I would like him to somehow capture more of the red fruit side of the fruit spectrum and a little more "Pinoté" in his wines.

The most reserved of Perrot-Minot's communal appellations is the 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Murgers des Cras, a blend of declassified premiers crus. Unwinding in the glass with notions of cassis, orange rind, peonies and smoky berry fruit, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound, with lively acids and powdery tannins.
The darling of the Francophone wine press, Christophe Perrot-Minot, continues his evolution in the direction of textural finesse and aromatic range: the extraction and richness of yesteryear have given way to melting tannins and ethereal aromas, exemplified by a beautiful set of 2019s. In recent vintages, despite that turn toward elegance, I had found the sheer sweetness of Perrot-Minot's wines a little overwhelming: his concentrated yet supple 2016s were, I felt, encumbered by fruit of almost confectionery sweetness despite their undeniable vivacity. These 2019s, tasted from barrel, unracked, were just as polished but more sapid and savory, and I eagerly look forward to revisiting them from bottle. As readers may know, Perrot-Minot now farms organically and is currently seeking certification. Barrels are mostly sourced from François Frères and the forest of Jupilles, he tells me, and a maximum of 30% new are employed.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers des Cras is a mélange of three Premier Crus: Cras, Les Murgers and Richemone. It has a precise, focused bouquet of brambly black fruit with light sous-bois elements emerging, followed later by powdered chalk. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, good weight and precision, a fine bead of acidity and a classy, minerally finish. Excellent.

Christophe Perrot-Minot asks me what I think of his wines, as he customarily does every year since I began visiting over a decade ago. "Oh, they are probably the best that you have ever made," I answer and he knows that I genuinely mean it. Indeed, in 2018 I feel that Perrot-Minot has made the wines that he has long wanted to create and come close to, yet never in quite as accomplished fashion as these. "In 2018, a lot of parcels suffered hydric stress, especially at the end of rows," he told me, one of the few growers candid about the challenges of the growing season. "When I picked I decided to declassify parts of the vineyard that had suffered stress. For example, in Morey-Saint-Denis En La Rue de Vergy I de-selected all the vines close to the forest that did not reach phenolic ripeness. We picked from 5 until 16 September, around 50% to 60% de-stemmed in all the wines. The maximum alcohol this year is 13.5% in the Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze and the others are around 13%. Of course, there is no chaptalization."
